A full accounting of Conrad's political views makes it difficult to categorize him in any of the readily available rubrics, and the political implications of his faction are sufficiently subtle to leave any interpretation of them as doctrinal statements adrift in the wake of his art. The present study maintains that the novels must be read as dramatic expressions of a complex political imagination, and are therefore not reducible to political ideology. It attempts to show, moreover, that Conrad was open to the prevailing political ideas of his time, whose which it inherited from a century-old debate on the bases of social philosophy, and that the fiction which derived from his speculations was more complicated than received opinion would have it--indeed, was much the better art because of its rich intellectual tradition.

This book looks at the inception, composition, and 1907 publication of The Secret Agent, one of Joseph Conrad’s most highly regarded political novels and a core text of literary modernism. David Mulry examines the development and revisions of the novel through the stages of the holograph manuscript, first as a short story, then as a serialized sensation fiction in Ridgway’s Militant Weekly for the American market, before it was extensively revised and published in novel form. Presciently anticipating the climate of modern terror, Conrad’s text responds to the failed Greenwich Bombing, the first anarchist atrocity to occur on English soil. This book charts its historical and cultural milieu via press and anarchist accounts of the bombing, to place Conrad foremost among the dynamite fiction of revolutionary anarchism and terrorism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Very brief work hinging on the characters of three unlikely inhabitants of a cattle station. The "reveal" of the Anarchist's backstory isn't built up to be much of a surprise - more a mild curiosity. The drama stems from knowing that all the primary characters are morally compromised in some form. With a century's removal from the controversy and outrage of anarchist bombings, the political elements are less of a commentary and more a simple plot device to get a man into the situation the Anarchist finds himself in.

Joseph Conrad (born Teodor Jozef Konrad Korzeniowski, 3 December 1857 - 3 August 1924) was a Polish-born novelist. Some of his works have been labelled romantic: Conrad's supposed "romanticism" is heavily imbued with irony and a fine sense of man's capacity for self-deception. Many critics regard Conrad as an important forerunner of Modernist literature. Conrad's narrative style and anti-heroic characters have influenced many writers, including Ernest Hemingway, D.H. Lawrence, Graham Greene, Joseph Heller and Jerzy Kosinski, as well as inspiring such films as Apocalypse Now (which was drawn from Conrad's Heart of Darkness).

The man's head and shoulders emerged above the deck, over which were scattered various tools of his trade and a few pieces of machinery. He was doing some repairs to the engines. At the sound of our footsteps he raised anxiously a grimy face with a pointed chin and a tiny fair moustache. What could be seen of his delicate features under the black smudges appeared to me wasted and livid in the greenish shade of the enormous tree spreading its foliage over the launch moored close to the bank.

B.O.S. Bos. You have seen the three magic letters on the advertisement pages of magazines and newspapers, in the windows of provision merchants, and on calendars for next year you receive by post in the month of November. They scatter pamphlets also, written in a sickly enthusiastic style and in several languages, giving statistics of slaughter and bloodshed enough to make a Turk turn faint. The "art" illustrating that "literature" represents in vivid and shining colours a large and enraged black bull stamping upon a yellow snake writhing in emerald-green grass, with a cobalt-blue sky for a background. It is atrocious and it is an allegory. The snake symbolizes disease, weakness-perhaps mere hunger, which last is the chronic disease of the majority of mankind. Of course everybody knows the B. O. S. Ltd., with its unrivalled products: Vinobos, Jellybos, and the latest unequalled perfection, Tribos, whose nourishment is offered to you not only highly concentrated, but already half digested. Such apparently is the love that Limited Company bears to its fellowmen-even as the love of the father and mother penguin for their hungry fledglings.

Under Western Eyes (1911) is a political thriller which takes place in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Geneva, Switzerland. Mr. de P—, the brutal Minister of State, is assassinated by a team of two, but the bombs used claim the lives of his footman, the first assassin and a number of bystanders. When student Razumov enters his rooms, he finds Victor Haldin, a fellow student who informs him that he was the one who murdered Mr. de P—, but he and his accomplice did not make a proper escape plan. He requests Razumov's help... Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), was a Polish author who wrote in English after settling in England. Conrad is regarded as one of the greatest novelists in English, though he did not speak the language fluently until he was in his twenties. He wrote stories and novels, often with a nautical setting, that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of an indifferent universe. He was a master prose stylist who brought a distinctly non-English tragic sensibility into English literature.
