What if the distinction between business and doing good vanished? What if all those who engaged in business were committed to a deeper purpose, and all those committed to doing good were entrepreneurial and enterprising? What would it take for a world of seven billion such people to solve all the world’s problems? More and more people are looking for meaning and purpose in their lives as employees, as consumers, and as investors. More and more people have more than enough material goods and are more interested in the qualities of the goods they buy; in the experiences associated with the services they provide and buy; in the way the companies they buy from act as citizens; and in self-actualization—rising up Maslow’s hierarchy. As an increasing percentage of the population reaches the point at which they no longer need more stuff, what will they do, how will they live their lives? If you are one of these people, wondering where to go from here, how to “be the solution” in the twenty-first century, Be the Solution provides an original perspective on how to create a better world. Focused entirely on entrepreneurial and Conscious Capitalist solutions to the challenges and opportunities facing humanity, Be the Solution shows how the entrepreneurial passion to create a better world, in combination with Conscious Capitalist business practices, can solve far more of the world’s problems than any other approach. In combination with leading Conscious Capitalists such as John Mackey writing on “Conscious Capitalism,” leading social entrepreneurs such as Muhammad Yunus writing on “Social Business,” and leading legal reform experts such as Hernando de Soto writing on “Is Economic Freedom for Everyone?,” entrepreneurial educator Michael Strong lays out a philosophical, social, and legal framework for a FLOW vision through which all problems may be solved entrepreneurially. FLOW, Inc., is an organization cofounded by John Mackey and Michael Strong to promote Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of flow as optimal experience—the state in which we are so immersed in challenging, creative activity that we forget that time is passing. To be engaged in flow activities is happiness itself. Whether we are creators of enterprises or entrepreneurially creative within our life as employees, we can embody the entrepreneurial spirit and, in the words of Michelangelo, “criticize by creating.” In addition, FLOW refers to the global flow of goods, services, capital, humans, ideas, and culture, in a positive win-win-win world based on love rather than fear. Combining the best of the positive psychology and human potential movements with the best of free market thinking, FLOW offers a unique perspective on how to Be the Solution in the twenty-first century.

This book provides a constructive criticism of the emerging practice of conscious capitalism from the perspective of world religions and spiritualities. Conscious capitalism, to many of its adherents, represents an evolutionary step forward beyond the dominant neo-liberal paradigm, where it often appears that just about everything is for sale. Is conscious capitalism consistent with the values inherent in religious and spiritual world-views and does it provide a better fit for bringing out the best that business has to offer? This book answers these questions and many more. An appealing read for researchers in business ethics as well as any reader critical of the excrescences of capitalism.

Capitalism is among the most positive forces in human history. When viewed from the bigger picture it is an expression of all the best things an economic system can offer the visionary thinker. Those who attack it as an expression of power, negative influence, and greed are confusing capitalism, with the darker aspects of the human psyche. One need only look closely at what has become of most of the "so-called' humane and idealistic economic, and social systems in history to see what a positive force capitalism can be. No matter how lofty many of the systems may have been conceptually, in the end they either failed or were transformed by the natural human inclination for competition, hierarchal behavior and reciprocal altruism. In spite of the many utopian ideas promoted by those well-meaning souls who see a better way than this the truth is that people work for money so they can buy things they need or want, including food, clothing and shelter. Capitalism has a more or less free market economy. That means prices move up or down according to the demand for products. People buy and sell things by their own judgment. Of course we know that if left to their own devices many people, companies, and nations will behave badly in a capitalist system and so there needs to be some regulation (trade laws) and some planning done by the government and international regulatory bodies. In capitalism people can choose to work for anyone who will hire them in a free market. This is different from many older economic systems. In feudalism, most people were serfs and had to work for the people who owned the land they lived on. Today in the mercantilist system, the government can make it difficult to buy things from other countries. In countries with mixed economies (part capitalism and part socialism) there may be laws about what you can buy or sell, or what prices you can charge, or whom you can hire or fire. Of course this may be a good thing in countries where unconscious capitalist are driven by personal greed and the lust for unbridled wealth and power. For the individual committed to personal growth there are opportunities to build a business based profit that embraces integrity, honesty and service. Those who are successful enough here have, in time, the ability to invest (give) their money to serve specific people, places and things. They can put their money together with others to buy or build things, even if they are too big for one person to make alone. Here capitalism is a toll for the creation of community and the bringing a common vision to fruition. Here the people who invest get to be the owners of what they buy or build together. Those who say that capitalism hurts workers, because businesses make more money by selling things than they pay the workers who make the things, I say "You are right on many levels and yet you are a bit delusional about how humans are hard-wired". The competitive element that seems so part of humans, cannot be eliminated by a nice sounding ideology. In the end many capitalist societies have embraced much that socialism has to offer including social security public assistance for the poor and universal medical care. Doctrinaire socialists and Marxists also argue society would be more efficient if people thought less about competing against one another for their own interests and thought more of working together for the overall good of society. Another argument is that each person has a right to basic needs (such as food and shelter). Within capitalism, sometimes people might not get everything they need to live. In the end it was capitalism that produced much of the technology that has made life easier for many and many socialist countries in the 21st century have given up the ideological game and simply function as capitalist societies under a veil of socialism while offering safety nets to the poor so that they survive even if not "prospering."
