It is a question that may seem, at once, simple yet profoundly complicated: What is consciousness? And from where in the body, or mind, does it arise? In his work, esteemed Harvard scholar Simeon Locke, M.D. brings us the debate over substance and source in consciousness, and offers what he sees as the resolution to this debate, with accessible text explaining the neurologist's thinking on how to define, measure and explain consciousness, from a variety of field's perspectives. Efforts to understand consciousness - perhaps the supreme manifestation of self-consciousness - continue. Books are written. Predictions are made. Physicists, psychologists, biologists, and philosophers participate. The brain is studied, but an understanding of consciousness eludes us, explains Locke. Still, the quest continues. We are not looking in the wrong place, for surely consciousness is a function of the nervous system. But we may be looking for the wrong thing, Locke adds. Quest implies we are looking for something, and consciousness is not a something. It is a process, or so-called distributed function of the brain. In this work, Locke explains how the nervous system plays a primary role in consciousness. Although scholars and scientists have debated the source of consciousness for more than a century, advances in brain science have brought the question to the forefront now, launching events from the Toward a Science of Consciousness convention in 2006, to the 11th Annual Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness convention in 2007. Across the nation, scholars and students are working to determine answers about consciousness, at sites from California's John F. Kennedy University degree program in Consciousness and Transformative Studies, to Vermont's Goddard College degree program in Consciousness Studies. And in this work, a patriarch in the field of Neurology explains his science and its vital role in consciousness, and how it makes us human.

This book is a philosophical examination of the main stages in our journey from hominid to human. It deals with the nature and origin of language, the self, self-consciousness, and the religious ideal of a return to Eden. It approaches these topics through a philosophical anthropology derived from the later writings of Wittgenstein. The result is an account of our place in nature consistent with both a hard-headed empiricism and a this-worldy but religiously significant mysticism.

Although the physical relationship between the natural world and individuals is quantifiable, the psychosocial effect of the former on the latter is often less tangible. What, for instance, is the connection between the environment in which we live and our creativity? How is our consciousness bounded and delimited by our materiality? And from whence does our idea of self and our belief in free will derive and when do our surroundings challenge these basic assumptions? Ecocritic Harold Fromm's challenging exploration of these and related questions twines his own physical experiences and observations with insights gathered from both the humanities and the sciences. Writing broadly and personally, Fromm explores our views of nature and how we write about it. He ties together ecology, evolutionary psychology, and consciousness studies to show that our perceived separation from our surroundings is an illusory construct. He argues for a naturalistic vision of creativity, free will, and the literary arts unimpeded by common academic and professional restraints. At each point of this intellectual journey, Fromm is honest, engaging, and unsparing. Philosophical, critical, often personal, Fromm's sweeping, interdisciplinary, and sometimes combative essays will change the way you think about your place in the environment.

A New York Times Bestseller. A scientist’s exploration into the mysteries of the human mind. What is the mind? What is the experience of the self truly made of? How does the mind differ from the brain? Though the mind’s contents—its emotions, thoughts, and memories—are often described, the essence of mind is rarely, if ever, defined. In this book, noted neuropsychiatrist and New York Times best-selling author Daniel J. Siegel, MD, uses his characteristic sensitivity and interdisciplinary background to offer a definition of the mind that illuminates the how, what, when, where, and even why of who we are, of what the mind is, and what the mind’s self has the potential to become. MIND takes the reader on a deep personal and scientific journey into consciousness, subjective experience, and information processing, uncovering the mind’s self-organizational properties that emerge from both the body and the relationships we have with one another, and with the world around us. While making a wide range of sciences accessible and exciting—from neurobiology to quantum physics, anthropology to psychology—this book offers an experience that addresses some of our most pressing personal and global questions about identity, connection, and the cultivation of well-being in our lives.

There has been a growing feeling in my mind that "Health" is too small a title with which to introduce a book that sets forth the noblest science that can possibly be formulated. Although health is one of the most desirable conditions in personal life, and one of the most essential, yet it is but one of the ways of Life that are set forth in the book. It appears to me that, "From Existence to Life; the Science of Self-Consciousness" exactly covers the whole field of that which is herein formulated. It is a science for all-round use, health being but one of the many modes of the Principle of All-Knowledge; and, so far as man is concerned, the science of self-consciousness, formulated correctly, and made use of intelligently, should satisfy the mind and comfort the heart in all the emergencies of self-conscious life, enabling a man to "hold on his way and grow stronger and stronger."

The latest discoveries in quantum physics are converging now with the ancient conclusions of Eastern wisdom traditions, opening the way for an evolution of human consciousness into a new "Field Consciousness" that is a transformation as profound as the movement of simple animal consciousness into human self-consciousness. The FIELD OF BEING tracks this emerging development. This book will appeal to those looking for spiritual depth, meaning and direction in the tumult of modern life.

Self Consciousness written by Rudolf Steiner and has been published by Garber Communications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1986 with Religion categories.

The ten lectures in this book were delivered by Steiner in Oslo, Norway, between November 24 and December 4, 1921. Today, their content is still valid and the world situation even more desparate and in need of a change in keeping with the spiritual-scientific knowledge contained in them. The necessity for the development of a "Consciousness of the Self as the spiritual essence of the free, individualistic, single-personality Human Being" was one of Steiner's unique contributions to the evolving history of mankind. This book is another milestone on that path.

Body Am I written by Moheb Costandi and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-05 with Science categories.

How the way we perceive our bodies plays a critical role in the way we perceive ourselves: stories of phantom limbs, rubber hands, anorexia, and other phenomena. The body is central to our sense of identity. It can be a canvas for self-expression, decorated with clothing, jewelry, cosmetics, tattoos, and piercings. But the body is more than that. Bodily awareness, says scientist-writer Moheb Costandi, is key to self-consciousness. In Body Am I, Costandi examines how the brain perceives the body, how that perception translates into our conscious experience of the body, and how that experience contributes to our sense of self. Along the way, he explores what can happen when the mechanisms of bodily awareness are disturbed, leading to such phenomena as phantom limbs, alien hands, and amputee fetishes. Costandi explains that the brain generates maps and models of the body that guide how we perceive and use it, and that these maps and models are repeatedly modified and reconstructed. Drawing on recent bodily awareness research, the new science of self-consciousness, and historical milestones in neurology, he describes a range of psychiatric and neurological disorders that result when body and brain are out of sync, including not only the well-known phantom limb syndrome but also phantom breast and phantom penis syndromes; body integrity identity disorder, which compels a person to disown and then amputate a healthy arm or leg; and such eating disorders as anorexia. Wide-ranging and meticulously researched, Body Am I (the title comes from Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra) offers new insight into self-consciousness by describing it in terms of bodily awareness.
