This edited volume explores conscription in the Napoleonic era, tracing the roots of European conscription and exploring the many methods that states used to obtain the manpower they needed to prosecute their wars. The levée-en-masse of the French Revolution has often been cited as a ‘Revolution in Military Affairs’, but was it truly a ‘revolutionary’ break with past European practices of raising armies, or an intensification of the scope and scale of practices already inherent in the European military system? This international collection of scholars demonstrate that European conscription has far deeper roots than has been previously acknowledged, and that its intensification during the Napoleonic era was more an ‘evolutionary’ than ‘revolutionary’ change. This book will be of much interest to students of Military History, Strategic Studies, Strategic History and European History.

Between the outbreak of war with Austria in 1792 and Napoleon's final debacle in 1814, France remained almost continously at war, recruiting in the process some two to three million frenchmen--a level of recruitment unknown to previous generations and widely resented as an attack on the liberties of rural communities. Forrest challenges the notion of a nation heroically rushing to arms by examining the massive rates of desertion and avoidance of service as well as their consequences on French society--on military campaigns and the morale of armies, on political opinion at home, on the social fabric of local villages, and on the Napoleonic dream of bringing about a coherent and centralized state.

For Napoleon to create an Italian army, it was necessary to foster Italian nationalism, encouraging Italians to perceive themselves as citizens of a greater Italy and not as subjects of the former city-states, such as Milan or Venice. Conscription brought more than 200,000 Italians, roughly 3 percent of the entire population, into the kingdom's army. The army was representative of every sector of north Italian society, and the military administration became a significant part of the state. In the kingdom of Italy, Napoleon created a national army in the modern sense of the term. Frederick C. Schneid explores the relationship between the army, the state, and Italian nationalism and also examines the social composition of the army's officers and soldiers as well as its performance on campaign. The book concludes with an assessment of the legacy of the Napoleonic era in Italy.

The Napoleonic Novels written by Erckmann-Chatrian and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-07 with Fiction categories.

Two classic novels of the Napoleonic epoch The writing partnership of Emile Erckmann and Alexandre Chatrian was highly regarded. In common with many authors of their time they drew upon the historical events of their own century as subject matter. This inevitably included the Napoleonic era which has in recent times come once more to the fore as a popular setting for fiction. These Napoleonic novels paint a detailed picture of the events against which the story is set and are well noted for their authenticity. The authors were also well known for their ability not simply to portray events but to accurately report the attitudes of people in all classes of society at the time. This book comprises two linked novels. They chronicle the adventures a young and reluctant conscript in the French Army. In the first he is drawn towards the epic conflict of Leipzig in 1813. Recalled to the colours in the sequel, he is once more forced to march to war-this time towards the muddy battlefield of Waterloo and the destruction of an Empire in 1815.

Inside Napoleonic France written by Gavin Daly and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-02 with History categories.

The first local history of Napoleonic France to appear in the English language, Inside Napoleonic France: State and Society in Rouen, 1800-1815 redresses the traditional neglect of regional history during this period. Relying on extensive French archival sources, Gavin Daly sets out to investigate the nature of the Napoleonic state and its short and longer-term impact upon local society. Specifically, it examines the question of state power and its implementation and reception at a local level, the relationship between central government and the regions, the social and economic impact of war and how the Napoleonic regime addressed Rouen's revolutionary past. Having carefully studied these issues, Daly argues that despite an unprecedented degree of social control, the Napoleonic state was not all-powerful, and that the central government's power was tempered by local considerations. It is this interaction between the representatives of central government and the regional elites which provides the central focus of the book.

A young soldier thrown to the mercies of total war This is remarkable story of a young Rhinelander caught up in the whirlwind of war that raged in Europe in the early 19th century. As one of the smaller Germanic states his homeland was always in an ambiguous position between the great powers. His brother was a proud Cuirassier in Napoleon's Army and Philippe himself became-in his turn-a conscript in the French infantry sent to Spain to fight the British and Spaniards. Captured, he suffered privations and dangers until incarcerated on the prison island of Cabrera where he was offered release if he would change his allegiances by joining the Kings German Legion. The end of war found him in service of a military man with whom he travelled to the East in a British East Indiaman which struck a reef, throwing him into a hair-raising experience of shipwreck and the battle for survival.

Some 12 years ago it was estimated that well over 300,000 works existed on this period and since then several thousand more have appeared. Therefore, it might be reasonably argued that there is little room for another volume. Nonetheless, this vast outpouring of literature has usually dealt with major leaders, specific battles or campaigns, and with certain branches of the service. Moreover, at least in English, the literature tends to concentrate primarily on the French or British armies. There appears to be a lack of works combining a description of the major changes and trends in the art of war, especially at the cutting edge of events, with a discussion of the French military establishment and the armies of the major opponents, British as well as continental. And while this book is only a brief survey, I do believe that it may serve as a contribution towards filling this gap in our historical knowledge of military institutions and fighting men.
