The Work Of Art written by Anthea Callen and has been published by Reaktion Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-15 with Art categories.

In The Work of Art, Anthea Callen analyzes the self-portraits, portraits of fellow artists, photographs, prints, and studio images of prominent nineteenth-century French Impressionist painters, exploring the emergence of modern artistic identity and its relation to the idea of creative work. Landscape painting in general, she argues, and the “plein air” oil sketch in particular were the key drivers of change in artistic practice in the nineteenth century—leading to the Impressionist revolution. Putting the work of artists from Courbet and Cézanne to Pissaro under a microscope, Callen examines modes of self-representation and painting methods, paying particular attention to the painters’ touch and mark-making. Using innovative methods of analysis, she provides new and intriguing ways of understanding material practice within its historical moment and the cultural meanings it generates. Richly illustrated with 180 color and black-and-white images, The Work of Art offers fresh insights into the development of avant-garde French painting and the concept of the modern artist.

The Battle For Realism written by James Hyman and has been published by Paul Mellon Ctr for Studies this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Art categories.

Art historian James Hyman takes a fresh look at the crucial years after the Second World War when attempts were made to revive European culture and debates about the future of art were fierce. The author proposes that realism in Europe during the early Cold War years occupied a radical vanguard position and stood in opposition to the competing claims made for American Abstract Expressionism. He examines two distinct visions of realism - social realism and Modernist realism - and explores their political implications and ideological significance. Hyman argues that this Battle for Realism shaped and internationalised British art and addresses a range of artists, from Modernist realists such as Auerbach, Bacon, Freud, Kossoff, Moore and Sutherland to social realists Hogarth, de Francia and the 'kitchen-sink painters'. He also illuminates the impact of foreign and emigre artists on British culture, addressing artists such as Giacometti, Guttuso and Picasso, and examining the claims made for London as an art centre to rival the Ecole de Paris and the New York School. Hyman draws on contemporary critical writing to give fresh insights into the art debates of the period and gives new prom

On Architecture written by Adolf Loos and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Architecture categories.

This volume gathers the few essays written by the quirky Austrian architect Loos (d. 1933) as well as student notes of his lectures. The essays respond in part to his best-known essay "Ornament and crime", in which he criticized ornament as a waste of labor. Among other topics the essays celebrate classical architecture, critique certain inefficient habits (including eating goulash at 10 am instead of having a big American-style breakfast), argue that architecture is not one of the arts, and consider the relation of Viennese coffee houses to domestic architecture. The volume is not indexed. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Approaches To The Archaeological Heritage written by Henry Cleere and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1984-08-16 with Political Science categories.

This book undertakes a comparative study of the history and development of legislative and administrative systems in operation today for the protection of archaeological monuments. With the exception of Scandinavia and the United Kingdom, no country adopted a positive policy towards the protection and conservation of its archaeological and historical heritage until the twentieth century. Moreover, it was not until the middle of that century, under the threat of wholesale devastation from extensive schemes for social and economic development, that the accelerating disappearance of the sites and monuments of Antiquity became the object of intensive study and legislation. Since then systems of cultural resource management have developed throughout the world. A range of countries (from Europe, America, Asia and Africa) representing a diversity of political and ideological systems - capitalist, socialist and ex-colonial - have been selected as being broadly representative of the variety of these systems. The case studies have been written by distinguished archaeologists and provide critical evaluations of the objectives and shortcomings of these systems.

On the basis of these case studies he proposes a newtheory of power in the information age based on the management of communication networks.
