El libro aborda la experiencia de vida de jóvenes descendientes de trabajadores agrícolas en regiones migratorias del Valle de San Quintín, B.C. y Madera y Fresno, en California, con prsencia en el mercardo de trabajo agrícola al que, por década, se han insertado familias oaxaqueñas procedentes de comunidades rurales. Desde una perspectiva biográfica se analiza el proceso de incorporación de las y los jóvenes oaxaqueños a los contextos migratorios, más allá de las visiones clásicas asimilacionistas o integracionistas. En la narrativa encontramos trayectorias interseccionadas por condiciones de etnicidad, "raza", clase y género, que atraviesan la experiencia de los sujetos en el continuo proceso de apropiación de los contextos de llegada y reproducción de su vida cotidiana. Se parte de los estudios de la subalternidad y la poscolonialidad, para plantear el proceso de incorporación de sociedades indígenas en contextos migratorios, desde las condeiciones de dominación que históricamente han impactado sus subjetividades; pero también desde la enunciación y posicionamiento con construyen narrativas de resistencia elaboradas por las y los jóvenes como sujetos protagonistas de este estudio.

Maria Patricia Fernandez-Kelly peels off the labels--"Made in Taiwan," "Assembled in Mexico"--and the trade names--RCA, Sony, General Motors, United Technologies, General Electric, Mattel, Chrysler, American Hospital Supply--to reveal the hidden human dimensions of present-day multinational manufacturing procedures. Focusing on Cuidad Juarez, located at the United States-Mexican border, Fernandez-Kelly examines the reality of maquiladoras, the hundreds of assembly plants that since the 1960s have been used by the Mexican government as part of its development strategy. Most maquiladoras function as subsidiaries of large U.S.-based corporations and a majority of the employees are women. Drawing from current knowledge in political economy and anthropology, this study focuses on one common denominator of the international division of labor--a growing proletariat of Third World women exploited by what some experts are calling "the global assembly line."

The U.S.-Mexico border region is home to anthropologist Carlos Vélez-Ibáñez. Into these pages he pours nearly half a century of searching and finding answers to the Mexican experience in the southwestern United States. He describes and analyzes the process, as generation upon generation of Mexicans moved north and attempted to create an identity or sense of cultural space and place. In today’s border fences he also sees barriers to how Mexicans understand themselves and how they are fundamentally understood. From prehistory to the present, Vélez-Ibáñez traces the intense bumping among Native Americans, Spaniards, and Mexicans, as Mesoamerican populations and ideas moved northward. He demonstrates how cultural glue is constantly replenished by strengthening family ties that reach across both sides of the border. The author describes ways in which Mexicans have resisted and accommodated the dominant culture by creating communities and by forming labor unions, voluntary associations, and cultural movements.
