Among the great 20th-century masters, the surrealist painter Joan Miró stands out for the atmosphere of wit and spontaneity that pervades his work. Mirós art went through many phases, and its major features his signs and symbols, his series of anguished peintures sauvages in the 1930s, his lyrical, poetic gouaches, his monumental sculptures and ceramics, his unprecedented use of poetic titles, and his attachment to nature and to the night are discussed here by Roland Penrose, a friend of the artist for almost five decades. A brief epilogue by Eduardo de Benito, London correspondent of the Spanish art periodical Lápiz, illustrates the developments of Mirós last years. This new revised edition, now illustrated in colour throughout, includes a foreword by Antony Penrose, outlining the relationship between his father and the artist, as well as updates to the Bibliography.

Considered one of the great artist of the 20th century, Joan Miro has bequeathed us a definitive body of work whose influence has continued to grow over the years. Miro did not paint dreams but instead , through his works, provided the spectator with certain elements so that he would be the one that dreamed. He never worked under the influence of hypnosis, drugs or alcohol. Nevertheless, his artistic personality and the way he represented on canvas what inspiration dictated to him led André Breton to exclaim: Miro is the most surrealist of us all!!. A creative force in the plastic field who felt an equal passion for the word, for the most daring poetic plays, a lover of objects and the bare truth of materials, Miro always revealed himself as an oneiric artist, a seeeker after the constellations that inspired some of his finest works. Jacques Dupin the main authority in Miro work details all those items in his amazing essay: The Birth of Signs. 72 illustrations

The Rise Of Surrealism written by Willard Bohn and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

In The Rise of Surrealism, Willard Bohn examines the various literary and artistic developments that prepared the way for the international Surrealist movement—including Cubism, Metaphysical Art, and Dada—as well as the triumph of Surrealism itself. In an analysis that spans the first two-thirds of the twentieth century, Bohn surveys writers and artists from France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, and the United States, examining both their aversion to mimesis and the solutions they devised to replace it. Much of the book is concerned with competing artistic models and with different strategies for creating avant-garde works, and focuses on such figures as Guillaume Apollinaire, Max Weber, Marius de Zayas, Francis Picabia, Giorgio de Chirico, André Breton, J. V. Foix, and Joan Miró. The dynamics of the imagery that painters and poets chose to employ and the new roles this imagery assumed in their compositions are also discussed.

Mir written by Joan Miró and has been published by Abradale Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Art categories.

Joan Miro (1893-1983), the foremost painter associated with Surrealism, studied in his native Barcelona before going to Paris in 1920. He was enthralled by the work of the Cubist and Fauve artists, who influenced his early style. During the 1920s he met regularly with a number of Surrealists, with whom he began to exhibit in 1925. His free-form abstractions from the 1920s draw on fantasy, dream, and myth, and many have been characterized as attempts at psychic automatism, or direct transcription of the subconscious. Despite such links with the Surrealists, however, Miro was never an orthodox member of the group. After 1930, he developed his lyrical mature style, distinguished by playful juxtapositions of freely flowing lines and brightly colored, abstract or organic forms. With remarkable consistency, he would continue to work in this visual world he had made for the rest of his career. During World War II he created an astonishing series of works on paper known as the Constellations, among the most personal of all artists' responses to the disasters of that time. In the late 1940s and the 1950s, Miro produced a number of monumental paintings, including murals for hotels in New York and Cincinnati and for the Graduate Center at Harvard University. In 1958 he designed one of his largest works, the ceramic mural for the UNESCO Building in Paris. Besides paintings, Miro produced a large body of lithographs, a medium especially suited to his simplified forms and wiry lines.

Surrealism written by Anna Balakian and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1986 with Art categories.

First published in 1959, Surrealism remains the most readable introduction to the French surrealist poets Apollinaire, Breton, Aragon, Eluard, and Reverdy. Providing a much-needed overview of the movement, Balakian places the surrealists in the context of early twentieth-century Paris and describes their reactions to symbolist poetry, World War I, and developments in science and industry, psychology, philosophy, and painting. Her coherent history of the movement is enhanced by her firsthand knowledge of the intellectual climate in which some of these poets worked and her interviews with Reverdy and Breton. In a new introduction, Balakian discusses the influence of surrealism on contemporary poetry. This volume includes photographs of the poets and reproductions of paintings by Ernst, Dali, Tanguy, and others.
