La Constitución de la Nación Argentina de 1853 fue dictada por el Congreso reunido por Urquiza en la ciudad de Santa Fe. Este texto se inspira en las Bases y puntos de partida para la organización política de la República Argentina publicada un año antes por Juan Bautista Alberdi. Su objetivo era constituir la unión nacional, afianzar la justicia, consolidar la paz interior, proveer a la defensa común, promover el bienestar general y asegurar los beneficios de la libertad para todos los hombres. La Constitución consta de dos partes: la primera se refiere a las declaraciones, derechos y garantías, mientras que la segunda se ocupa de las autoridades de la Confederación, incluyendo el Gobierno Federal y el Poder Legislativo. El Congreso tiene la atribución de formar y sancionar las leyes.

El propósito de la Constitución de 1853 fue poner fin al ciclo de las guerras civiles y sentar las bases de la Organización Nacional, objetivos que tardaron unas décadas más en cumplirse.
