The ?rst International Symposium on the Applications of Constraint Databases (CDB2004) took place in Paris, France, on June 12–13, 2004, just before the ACM SIGMOD and PODS conferences. Since the publication of the paper “Constraint Query Languages” by Kan- lakis, Kuper and Revesz in 1990, the last decade has seen a growing interest in constraint database theory, query evaluation, and applications, re?ected in a variety of conferences, journals, and books. Constraint databases have proven to be extremely ?exible and adoptable in environments that relational database systems cannot serve well, such as geographic information systems and bioinf- matics. This symposium brought together people from several diverse areas all c- tributing to the practice and the application of constraint databases. It was a continuation and extension of previous workshops held in Friedrichshafen, G- many (1995), Cambridge, USA (1996), Delphi, Greece (1997), and Seattle, USA (1998) as well as of the work in the comprehensive volume “Constraint Data- ses” edited by G. Kuper, L. Libkin and J. Paredaens (2000) and the textbook “Introduction to Constraint Databases” by P. Revesz (2002). The aim of the symposium was to open new and future directions in c- straint database research; to address constraints over domains other than the reals; to contribute to a better implementation of constraint database systems, in particular of query evaluation; to address e?cient quanti?er elimination; and to describe applications of constraint databases.

This book is the first comprehensive survey of the field of constraint databases. Constraint databases are a fairly new and active area of database research. The key idea is that constraints, such as linear or polynomial equations, are used to represent large, or even infinite, sets in a compact way. The ability to deal with infinite sets makes constraint databases particularly promising as a technology for integrating spatial and temporal data with standard re lational databases. Constraint databases bring techniques from a variety of fields, such as logic and model theory, algebraic and computational geometry, as well as symbolic computation, to the design and analysis of data models and query languages. The book is a collaborative effort involving many authors who have con tributed chapters on their fields of expertise. Despite this, the book is designed to be read as a whole, as opposed to a collection of individual surveys. In par ticular, the terminology and the style of presentation have been standardized, and there are multiple cross-references between the chapters. The idea of constraint databases goes back to the late Paris Kanellakis.

DEXA 2005, the 16th International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications, was held at the Copenhagen Business School, Copenhagen, Denmark, from August 22 to 26, 2005. The success of the DEXA series has partly been due to the way in which it has kept abreast of recent developments by spawning specialized workshops and conferences each with its own proceedings. In 2005 the DEXA programme was co-located with the 7th International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery [DaWaK 2005], the 6th International Conference on Electronic Commerce and Web Technologies [EC-Web 2005], the 4th International Conference on Electronic Government [EGOV 2005], the 2nd International Conference on Trust, Privacy, and Security in Digital Business [TrustBus 2005], the 2nd International Conference on Industrial Applications of Holonic and Multi-agent Systems [HoloMAS 2005], as well as 19 specialized workshops. These proceedings are the result of a considerable amount of hard work. Beginning with the preparation of submitted papers, the papers went through the reviewing process. This process was supported by online discussion between the reviewers to determine the final conference program. The authors of accepted papers revised their manuscripts to produce this fine collection. DEXA 2005 received 390 submissions, and from those the Program Committee selected the 92 papers in these proceedings. This year the reviewing process generated more than 1000 referee reports. The hard work of the authors, the referees and the Program Committee is gratefully acknowledged.

The number of new applications in need of database support is exploding and there is an increasing need to link and access database systems supporting these new applications via computer networks. End-users and non-computer experts are becoming heavily involved in the set-up, management and use of database systems and this book provides the important database design methodologies and implementation technology which should be available for them as well as for computer experts.

th DEXA 2001, the 12 International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications was held on September 3–5, 2001, at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. The rapidly growing spectrum of database applications has led to the establishment of more specialized discussion platforms (DaWaK conference, EC Web conference, and DEXA workshop), which were all held in parallel with the DEXA conference in Munich. In your hands are the results of much effort, beginning with the preparation of the submitted papers. The papers then passed through the reviewing process, and the accepted papers were revised to final versions by their authors and arranged with the conference program. All this culminated in the conference itself. A total of 175 papers were submitted to this conference, and I would like to thank all the authors. They are the real base of the conference. The program committee and the supporting reviewers produced altogether 497 referee reports, on average of 2.84 reports per paper, and selected 93 papers for presentation. Comparing the weight or more precisely the number of papers devoted to particular topics at several recent DEXA conferences, an increase can be recognized in the areas of XMS databases, active databases, and multi and hypermedia efforts. The space devoted to the more classical topics such as information retrieval, distribution and Web aspects, and transaction, indexing and query aspects has remained more or less unchanged. Some decrease is visible for object orientation.

In this era of heterogeneous and distributed data sources, ranging from semistructured documents to knowledge about coordination processes or workflows, logic provides a rich set of tools and techniques with which to address the questions of how to represent, query and reason about complex data. This book provides a state-of-the-art overview of research on the application of logic-based methods to information systems, covering highly topical and emerging fields: XML programming and querying, intelligent agents, workflow modeling and verification, data integration, temporal and dynamic information, data mining, authorization, and security. It provides both scientists and graduate students with a wealth of material and references for their own research and education.
