Intelligent Agents with Java(TM) A Programmer's Guide to Smarter Applications Add Artificial Intelligence to your Java applications * Learn to design and implement agent-based reasoning, modeling, and learning * Build your own personal assistants, Web agents, e-commerce agents, and multiagent systems. Learn how to create intelligent agents that can automate, mediate, and administer basic business functions. Java makes it easier than ever for programmers to build complex agents that reason and learn. In this book, enterprise programming experts Joe and Jennifer Bigus show you how to take advantage of Java's advanced features to differentiate your applications and build the smartest high-powered applications possible. The authors explain the principles of Al program design using Java's object-oriented features and present the essential AI algorithms used to develop agents that reason, model, and learn to adapt to the world around them. They then show how to apply these algorithms and techniques in practical "real-world" distributed computing applications. They develop an intelligent agent architecture and use it to construct several agent-enhanced programs, including a PC management agent, an adaptive Internet news reader that filters articles based on user preferences, and an electronic marketplace application where agents do the buying and selling. The enclosed CD-ROM gives you: * Complete source code for Java implementations of AI search algorithms, rule-based inferencing, and neural network learning * Java source code for three practical intelligent agent applications * The IBM Agent Building Environment (ABE) Developer's Toolkit

Research in multi-agent systems offers a promising technology for problems with networks, online trading and negotiations but also social structures and communication. This is a book on agent and multi-agent technology for internet and enterprise systems. The book is a pioneer in the combination of the fields and is based on the concept of developing a platform to share ideas and presents research in technology in the field and application to real problems. The chapters range over both applications, illustrating the possible uses of agents in an enterprise domain, and design and analytic methods, needed to provide the solid foundation required for practical systems.

The predominant view in economic theory until the crisis of the '70s, argued the great enterprise was the key player in the innovation process, this was conceived as an activity that unfolded in specific areas, with clear responsibilities and predetermined objectives. This operating structure of the innovative process was functional demand model that favored the standardization of production. The innovative process was developed predominantly by firms that had a domain oligopolistic market from which they made windfall with which financed the research and development activities. In this context, the role of SMEs in the innovation process is limited to covering the portion of the market that big companies left.

This book is a result of the ISD'99, Eight International Conference on Infonnation Systems Development-Methods and Tools, Theory, and Practice held August 11-13, 1999 in Boise, Idaho, USA. The purpose of this conference was to address the issues facing academia and industry when specifying, developing, managing, and improving infonnation systems. ISD'99 consisted not only of the technical program represented in these Proceedings, but also of plenary sessions on product support and content management systems for the Internet environment, workshop on a new paradigm for successful acquisition of infonnation systems, and a panel discussion on current pedagogical issues in systems analysis and design. The selection of papers for ISD'99 was carried out by the International Program Committee. Papers presented during the conference and printed in this volume have been selected from submissions after fonnal double-blind reviewing process and have been revised by their authors based on the recommendations of reviewers. Papers were judged according to their originality, relevance, and presentation quality. All papers were judged purely on their own merits, independently of other submissions. We would like to thank the authors of papers accepted for ISD'99 who all made gallant efforts to provide us with electronic copies of their manuscripts confonning to common guidelines. We thank them for thoughtfully responding to reviewers comments and carefully preparing their final contributions. We thank Daryl Jones, provost of Boise State University and William Lathen, dean, College of Business and Economics, for their support and encouragement.
