Heritage language education is a relatively new field developed as "heritage" has become an important trope of belonging, legitimacy and commodification. Many recent studies treat the "heritage language learner" as an objective category. However, it is a social construct, whose meaning is contested by researchers, school administrators and the students themselves. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in 2007-2011 at a weekend Japanese language school in the United States, this monograph investigates the construction of the heritage language learner at the intersections of the knowledge-power complex, ideologies of language and national belonging, and politics of schooling. It examines the ways individuals become, resist and negotiate their new subjectivity as heritage language learners through becoming objects of study, being caught in nationalist aspirations and school politics regarding what to teach to whom, and negotiating with peers with various linguistic proficiency and family backgrounds. The volume proposes a new approach to view the notion of heritage language learner as a site of negotiation regarding the legitimate knowledge of language and ways of belonging, while offering practical suggestions for schools.

Based on the perception that language students who have a family background in the target language differ from 'typical' foreign language learners in important ways, the phenomenon of what has been termed "heritage language learner" has attracted increasing interest over the past three decades. Traditionally, heritage learners have been characterized as falling in between foreign language learners and native speakers with respect to their proficiency in the 'heritage' language, and been further distinguished from foreign language learners with reference to identity needs in light of their family connection to the language. This dissertation argues that traditional conceptions of the phenomenon cast a monolingual, monocentric view on heritage learners, failing to capture important dimensions of what learning and living with a 'heritage' language means to multilingual people who navigate complex cultural and linguistic spaces in today's world. Drawing on contemporary models of multilingualism and the self, it discusses and empirically demonstrates the extended perspective on heritage learners that comes to light when approaching the phenomenon through a theoretical lens of multilingual subjectivity. Applying a multimodal narrative inquiry approach, I investigate the perspectives and experiences of adults who grew up in (partly) German-speaking families in anglophone Canada. I examine how individual participants construct their sense of self as multilinguals in relation to narrated processes of learning German in institutional settings and beyond, showing how learning and living with German as a 'heritage' language figures into their development and perspective as multilingual language users. Data sources include individual interviews, written reflection, and participants' creation of a drawing that reflects their sense of self in relation to language. Analyses comprise three in-depth studies and a cross-case analytic approach. Implications are derived at the levels of theory and pedagogical practice. I suggest the incorporation of biography-centred modules in heritage language education and call to seize the emergence of the phenomenon of heritage learner as an opportunity to rethink language education more in general.

Immigrants' extensive contributions to Canada include cultural and linguistic diversity, underscoring the need to understand the complexities and identity construction of linguistic minorities. Drawing on sociocultural and poststructural perspectives on language, identity, and power (Duff, 2007, 2019; Foucault, 1978; Norton, 2013), this multiple case study of six university-aged 1.5 and second generation Korean Canadians explores the dynamic interplay of heritage language learning experiences, situated contexts, and identity construction. Drawing on participants' lived experiences and perspectives, the data include in-depth interviews with the primary participants, a focus group with community leaders, and the researcher's reflection journals. Offering insight into the participants' first institutional heritage language learning experiences at a university, the findings reveal how deeply these linguistic minorities' heritage language learning trajectories and identity construction were situated within complex webs of familial, sociocultural, political and transnational factors, and individuals' different ways of reacting to the social forces. Endeavors to immerse themselves into a range of linguistic and cultural contexts gave these young adults valuable life lessons and unique identities as Korean Canadians, within which they shifted their bilingual/cultural identities. Their heritage language played a critical role in the participants' multiple identities, broadening their social spaces. University-aged Korean Canadians' experiences underscore the importance of sociocultural contexts of linguistic minorities' identity and heritage language learning, the close relationship between language and identity, and the critical role of institutional inclusion of heritage languages, alongside the role of the home, educational institutions, communities, and society.

Identity of Chinese Heritage Language Learners in a Global Era enriches the current research on heritage language (HL) learner identity by examining how identity is constructed, negotiated, and performed in the narratives of university Chinese HL (CHL) learners in Hong Kong. This monograph has identified three sub-categories of CHL learners: domestic-born Chinese, ‘third culture’ Chinese, and overseas Chinese sojourners. Research has shown that heritage language learners (HLLs) have different characteristics and needs than foreign language learners (FLLs). Heritage language learners acquire or learn their heritage languages at home or at community-based schools whereas foreign language learners typically learn a language in the classroom setting. In recent years, U.S. colleges and universities have experienced a rapid rise in the number of learners who have studied their heritage language of Chinese in the classroom. However, there has been little empirical research from the perspectives of university-level Chinese heritage language learners about their learning experiences and needs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the factors that these learners perceive contributed to their heritage language learning, and how they influence that learning in both positive and negative ways. The research methods for this study included collecting data from six university-level Chinese heritage language learners written language autobiographies, conducting semi-structured interviews with each, member-checking the interviews, and holding focus-group interviews in order to investigate their perceptions of these factors.The results from this study showed that these students family cultural/linguistic background, early exposure to their heritage language, parental involvement in promoting their use of their heritage language, personal motivation, and the agentive role of the learners themselves in decision-making effectively promoted their heritage language learning. While the results from this study showed the importance of these contributory factors to heritage language learners, it is equally important to understand the cultural identities they have constructed during their heritage language learning process. Finally, I offered the studys implications for foreign language instructors and areas for future research.
