While we are used to looking around us, we are less used to listening to what happens around us. And yet, the noises we produce reveal our way of life, and learning to master them is a necessity. This book aims at drawing the reader's attention to the sound of the urban environment. The topic is by its very nature complex, as it involves sounds and noises, urban space and social activities. Using an interdisciplinary approach, it examines an incongruous selection of experimentations from the domains of music, art and architecture. Significant case studies of pieces of music, public art works and scientific research in the field of urban planning are analyzed, investigating the methods that have been adopted and the aural processes that have been generated. It then uses the findings to reconstruct the underlying theories and practices and to show what might be drawn from these procedures applied to urban planning. The overall objective is to learn to build and enrich space with sound, arguing that there is a need to reconsider architecture and urban planning beyond the merely physical, and to look to the world of the arts and other disciplines. In doing so, the book guides the reader toward a sensorial architecture, and more generally toward consciously creating environmental architecture which is sustainable and connects with art and which diffuses a culture of sound.

Enter the basement of Peninsular Plaza, a shopping mall in central Singapore, and you'll descend into rock history. Since the days of the now-legendary group The Straydogs, this area has served as the locus for amateur and semi-professional musicians. For the bands and their fans, rock music defines their lives in Singapore. It is not uncommon to see legends from the 1960s jamming out with new up-and-coming artists, and the basement venue has afforded expected and unexpected opportunities for work, play, and meaning in the contemporary music scene in this Southeast Asian city-state. The emergent quality of this community is simultaneously fiercely cosmopolitan, and entirely Singaporean. Sonic City is an ethnography of the community centered around these musicians, their family, friends, and fans, and the way they make music and a way of life. It considers the aesthetic dispositions, cultural values, ideologies, and identities within the constraints of urban life in the city. Grounded in debates from sound studies and based on five years of deeply participatory sonic ethnography, Steve Ferzacca draws on Bruno Latour's ideas of the social continually emergent, constantly in-the-making, associations of heterogeneous elements of human and non-human mediators and intermediaries to portray a community entangled in vernacular and national heritage projects. What emerges is a vernacular heritage drawing upon Singapore's unique place in Southeast Asian and World history.

What is experimental music today? This book offers an up to date survey of this field for anyone with an interest, from seasoned practitioners to curious readers. This book takes the stance that experimental music is not a limited historical event, but is a proliferation of approaches to sound that reveals much about present-day experience. An experimental work is not identifiable by its sound alone, but by the nature of the questions it poses and its openness to the sounding event. Experimentation is a way of working. It pushes past that which is known to discover what lies beyond it, finding new knowledge, forms, and relationships, or accepting a state of uncertainty. For each of these composers and sound artists, craft is developed and transformed in response to the questions they bring to their work. Scientific, perceptual, or social phenomena become catalysts in the operation of the work. These practices are not presented according to a chronology, a set of techniques, or social groupings. Instead, they are organized according to the content areas that are their subjects, including resonance, harmony, objects, shapes, perception, language, interaction, sites, and histories. Musical materials may be subject, among other treatments, to systemization, observation, examination, magnification, fragmentation, translation, or destabilization.
