Contact Mechanics Of Articular Cartilage Layers written by Ivan Argatov and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-15 with Science categories.

This book presents a comprehensive and unifying approach to articular contact mechanics with an emphasis on frictionless contact interaction of thin cartilage layers. The first part of the book (Chapters 1–4) reviews the results of asymptotic analysis of the deformational behavior of thin elastic and viscoelastic layers. A comprehensive review of the literature is combined with the authors’ original contributions. The compressible and incompressible cases are treated separately with a focus on exact solutions for asymptotic models of frictionless contact for thin transversely isotropic layers bonded to rigid substrates shaped like elliptic paraboloids. The second part (Chapters 5, 6, and 7) deals with the non-axisymmetric contact of thin transversely isotropic biphasic layers and presents the asymptotic modelling methodology for tibio-femoral contact. The third part of the book consists of Chapter 8, which covers contact problems for thin bonded inhomogeneous transversely isotropic elastic layers and Chapter 9, which addresses various perturbational aspects in contact problems and introduces the sensitivity of articular contact mechanics. This book is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers in the area of biomechanics, and engineers interested and involved in the analysis and design of thin-layer structures.

An Analytical Method For Rolling Contact Of Articular Cartilages In Diarthrodial Joint written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with categories.

An analytical method is presented to investigate the stresses and strains in the cartilage layers of diarthrodial joint under rolling contact. Each cartilage layer in contact is assumed to be biphasic, composed of a linear elastic solid phase and Newtonian viscous fluid, whereas the subchondral bone is simplified as a rigid body. The contact range of two cartilage layers is discretized, where the surface tractions are piecewise given. A Galerkin-penalty method is applied to form the finite element formulation for the cartilage layers. The surface tractions, stresses and strains in the cartilage layers are then obtained for each time step with a numerical procedure of rolling contact. Results show that the interstitial fluid plays a fundamental role in the distributions of the stresses and strains in the cartilage. The normal solid stress reaches its maximum on the cartilage-subchondral bone interface. The coefficient of friction at the contact surface has a great effect on the tangential traction while it has little effect on the normal traction. The difference of rolling velocity between the two cartilage layers has an increasing effect on the tangential traction as the coefficient of friction increases.

This book contains contributions from leading researchers in biomechanics, nanomechanics, tribology, contact mechanics, materials science and applications on various experimental techniques including atomic force microscopy (AFM) for studying soft, biomimetic and biological materials and objects. Biologists, physicists, researchers applying methods of contact mechanics and researchers testing materials using indentation techniques along with many other applied scientists will find this book a useful addition to their libraries. Moreover, several reviews in this book are written as introductions to several important and rather sophisticated research areas such as depth-sensing indentation, studying of biological cells by AFM probes, mechanics of adhesive contact and contact between viscoelastic (hereditary elastic) solids. The book containing new theoretical models, results of experimental studies and numerical simulations, along with reviews of above mentioned areas of contact mechanics in application to biological systems, would be beneficial for researchers in many areas of biology, medicine, engineering, mechanics and biomimetics.

The ideal allograft would have a relatively thick articular layer to provide sufficient compliance for promoting joint congruence with the mating metacarpal surface, and surface curvatures that match the saddle-shaped anatomy of the distal trapezial articular surface to reproduce the normal joint motions. A potential solution that would provide suitable trapezium osteochondral allografts for patients involves precisely machining and bending allografts from a lower extremity joint with thicker cartilage, such as the distal femoral surface of the knee, to match the shape and curvature of the trapezium. Such bent osteochondral allografts would provide all the desired benefits of the ideal arthroplasty. Chapter 5 outlines the development of this novel technology, including proof of concept and feasibility demonstrations, business strategy and market analysis.

This book offers a collection of original peer-reviewed contributions presented at the 3rd International and 18th National Conference on Machines and Mechanisms (iNaCoMM), organized by Division of Remote Handling & Robotics, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, India, from December 13th to 15th, 2017 (iNaCoMM 2017). It reports on various theoretical and practical features of machines, mechanisms and robotics; the contributions include carefully selected, novel ideas on and approaches to design, analysis, prototype development, assessment and surveys. Applications in machine and mechanism engineering, serial and parallel manipulators, power reactor engineering, autonomous vehicles, engineering in medicine, image-based data analytics, compliant mechanisms, and safety mechanisms are covered. Further papers provide in-depth analyses of data preparation, isolation and brain segmentation for focused visualization and robot-based neurosurgery, new approaches to parallel mechanism-based Master-Slave manipulators, solutions to forward kinematic problems, and surveys and optimizations based on historical and contemporary compliant mechanism-based design. The spectrum of contributions on theory and practice reveals central trends and newer branches of research in connection with these topics.
