Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Communications - Intercultural Communication, grade: 1.2, University of Kaiserslautern, language: English, abstract: Politics of Space ́s idea is to present a body of work that address some of the key questions that have held my attention over several years in relation to the nature and peculiar concerns of contemporary non-Western art, especially on how Contemporary Australian Aboriginal Art is perceived, received and read in significant parts of the public where cross-cultural exchange occurs. Significant areas of research in relation to Contemporary Indigenous Art are not only certain institutions within the art world such as art centres, art galleries and museums but also public areas like universities, government bureaus and particularly touristic institutions, as a vast majority of non-indigenous people experience non-Western art in this context only.

This publication brings together existing research as well as new data to show how Arnhem Land bark painting was critical in the making of Indigenous Australian contemporary art and the self-determination agendas of Indigenous Australians. It identifies how, when and what the shifts in the reception of the art were, especially as they occurred within institutional exhibition displays. Despite key studies already being published on the reception of Aboriginal art in this area, the overall process is not well known or always considered, while the focus has tended to be placed on Western Desert acrylic paintings. This text, however represents a refocus, and addresses this more fully by integrating Arnhem Land bark painting into the contemporary history of Aboriginal art. The trajectory moves from its understanding as a form of ethnographic art, to seeing it as conceptual art and appreciating it for its cultural agency and contemporaneity.

Remote Avant Garde written by Jennifer Loureide Biddle and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-05 with Social Science categories.

In Remote Avant-Garde Jennifer Loureide Biddle models new and emergent desert Aboriginal aesthetics as an art of survival. Since 2007, Australian government policy has targeted "remote" Australian Aboriginal communities as at crisis level of delinquency and dysfunction. Biddle asks how emergent art responds to national emergency, from the creation of locally hunted grass sculptures to biliterary acrylic witness paintings to stop-motion animation. Following directly from the unprecedented success of the Western Desert art movement, contemporary Aboriginal artists harness traditions of experimentation to revivify at-risk vernacular languages, maintain cultural heritage, and ensure place-based practice of community initiative. Biddle shows how these new art forms demand serious and sustained attention to the dense complexities of sentient perception and the radical inseparability of art from life. Taking shape on frontier boundaries and in zones of intercultural imperative, Remote Avant-Garde presents Aboriginal art "under occupation" in Australia today.

Double Desire written by Ian McLean and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-19 with Art categories.

Double Desire challenges the tendency by critics to perpetuate an aesthetic apartheid between Indigenous and Western art. The double desire explored in this book is that of the divided but also amplified attractions that occur between cultural traditions in places where both indigenous and colonial legacies are strong. The result, it is argued, produces imaginative transcultural practices that resist the assimilation or acculturation of Indigenous perspectives into the dominant Western mod...

Spirit Country written by Jennifer Isaacs and has been published by Hardie Grant this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-05 with History categories.

Spirit Country explores the vibrant contemporary Aboriginal art of northern and central Australia, with its diverse regional traditions – from the finely cross-hatched bark paintings of Arnhem Land to the mesmerising dotted canvases of the Central Desert, from the elaborate Pukumani poles of the Tiwi islands to the broad fields of ochre in contemporary works from the Kimberley. Jennifer Isaacs has been a close observer of the artistic renaissance across Aboriginal Australia since it began during the early 1970s. In Spirit Country she outlines the forces that propelled the movement’s initial upsurge and seeks the sources of its continuing vitality. Drawing on the rich resources of the Ganter Myer Collection of Contemporary Aboriginal Art, she traces the widening compass of the movement, and particularly the involvement of women artists, whose works have taken contemporary Aboriginal art in new directions. For the communities of the Central Desert, the Kimberley and Arnhem Land, art is both a much-needed source of income and a vital means of personal and collective expression. The art of these remote communities is intended to send a message to the wider world, to educate and enlighten outsiders about the artists’ religious thought and the continuing vitality of their cultures. Theirs is an artistic practice that comes from a conjunction of individual creativity, ancient art-making traditions and contemporary political struggles for land. While the extraordinary abstract qualities of these works have caught the eyes of the Western art world, for those who make them they are also religious documents, maps, personal histories and title deeds to land.
