"Contemporary Art, World Cinema, and Visual Culture: Essays by Hamid Dabashi" is a collection of writings by the acclaimed cultural critic and scholar. A thorough Introduction rigorously frames chapters and identifies in Dabashi’s writings a comprehensive approach, which forms the criteria for selecting the essays for the volume. The Introduction also teases out of these essays the overarching theme that holds them together, the manner they inform a particularly critical angle in them and the way they cohere. The Introduction dwells on the work of one scholar, public intellectual and theorist of modern and contemporary arts to extrapolate more universal issues of concern to art criticism in general. These scattered materials and their underlying theoretical and critical logic are a unique contribution to the field of modern and contemporary arts.

Unlike most studies of the relationship between cinema and art, which privilege questions of medium or institutional specificity and intermediality, Screening the Art World explores the ways in which artists and the art world more generally have been represented in cinema. Contributors address a rarely explored subject -art in cinema, rather than the art of cinema - by considering films across genres, historical periods and national cinemas in order to reflect on cinema's fluctuating imaginary of 'art' and 'the art world'. The book examines the intersection of art history with history in cinema, cinema's simultaneous affirmation and denigration of the idea of art as 'truth' and what this means for cinema's understanding of itself, the dominant, often contradictory ways in which artists have been represented on screen, and cinematic representations of the art world's tenuous position between commercial good and cultural capital.

Mapping the possibilities of photofilmic images This book explores the multifarious ways in which art, cinema, and other forms of visual culture respond to a digitized and networked world. Traditional discourses on medium specificity, developed in distinct disciplines, often fail to provide an adequate description of the transformations that photography and film have undergone. The essays, written by internationally renowned scholars, encompass a broad range of different forms such as video, documentary film, cinema, photography, and the Internet, as well as varied fields such as art history, film studies, photography theory, visual culture studies, and media theory. In this way they deal with heterogeneous practices or techniques ranging from panoramas, drone surveillance, tableau vivant, press coverage, computer-based editing, digitized financial markets, and various concepts such as temporality and contemporaneity, eco-aesthetics and forensic practice, countervisuality, human rights and political imagination, social transparency and control, thus charting the possibilities of the continuous border-crossing movement between photographic and filmic images within contemporary art and visual culture. This volume also contains, as an artist’s contribution, a substantial and richly illustrated interview with Eric Baudelaire. Contributors: Eric Baudelaire (Paris), Brianne Cohen (Amherst College), Stefanie Diekmann (University of Hildesheim), Evgenia Giannouri (Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle), Lilian Haberer (University of Cologne), Jana J. Haeckel (UCL), Ágnes Pethö (Sapientia University of Transylvania, Romania), Eivind Rossaak (National Library of Norway), Linda Schädler (ETH Zurich), Terry Smith (University of Pittsburgh), Alexander Streitberger (UCL), Hilde Van Gelder (KU Leuven).

Contemporary Chinese Cinema And Visual Culture written by Sheldon Lu and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-15 with Performing Arts categories.

Sheldon Lu's wide-ranging new book investigates how filmmakers and visual artists from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan have envisioned China as it transitions from a socialist to a globalized capitalist state. It examines how the modern nation has been refashioned and re-imagined in order to keep pace with globalization and transnationalism. At the heart of Lu's analysis is a double movement in the relationship between nation and transnationalism in the Chinese post-socialist state. He considers the complexity of how the Chinese economy is integrated in the global capitalist system while also remaining a repressive body politic with mechanisms of control and surveillance. He explores the interrelations of the local, the national, the subnational, and the global as China repositions itself in the world. Lu considers examples from feature and documentary film, mainstream and marginal cinema, and a variety of visual arts: photography, painting, digital video, architecture, and installation. His close case studies include representations of class, masculinity and sexuality in contemporary Taiwanese and Chinese cinema; the figure of the sex worker as a symbol of modernity and mobility; and artists' representations of Beijing at the time of the 2008 Olympics.

Through the study of exemplary media works and practices - photography, film, video, performance, installations, web cams - scholars from various disciplines call attention to the unsettling of identification and the disablement of vision in contemporary aesthetics. To look at an image that prevents the stabilization of identification, identity and place; to perceive a representation that oscillates between visibility and invisibility; to relate to an image which entails a rebalancing of sight through the valorization of other senses; to be exposed, through surveillance devices, to the gaze of new figures of authority - the aesthetic experiences examined here concern a spectator whose perception lacks in certainty, identification, and opticality what it gains in fallibility, complexity, and interrelatedness. Precarious Visualities provides a new understanding of spectatorship as a relation that is at once corporeal and imaginary, and persistently prolific in its cultural, social, and political effects. Contributors include Raymond Bellour ( cole des hautes tudes en sciences sociales), Monika Kin Gagnon (Concordia University), Beate Ochsner (University of Mannheim -Universit t Mannheim), Claudette Lauzon (McGill University), David Tomas (Universit du Qu bec Montr al), Slavoj Zizek (Ljubljiana University and University of London), Marie Fraser (Universit du Qu bec Montr al), Alice Ming Wai Jim (Concordia University), Julie Lavigne (Universit du Qu bec Montr al), Amelia Jones (University of Manchester), Eric Michaud ( cole des hautes tudes en sciences sociales), H l ne Samson (McCord Museum), and Thierry Bardini (Universit de Montr al).

Art And The Politics Of Visibility written by Zeena Feldman and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-05 with Social Science categories.

How does cultural context affect the interpretation of art? What makes artists' work transnational or national in character, and how will their visibility be impacted by either label? Art and the Politics of Visibility questions these dynamics, asking how the dissemination of visual culture on a global scale affects art and its institutions. Taking Shanghai-based artist Yang Fudong's practice as a point of departure, this volume focuses on how politically charged images produced in contemporary art, cinema, literature, news media and fashion become widely consumed or marginalised. Through case studies of artists including Titus Kaphar, Sara Maple, Shirin Neshat, J.M. Coetzee, Barbara Walker and Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the book illuminates the relationship between visibility, politics and identity in contemporary visual culture.

The Routledge Companion To Contemporary Art Visual Culture And Climate Change written by T. J. Demos and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-02-25 with Art categories.

International in scope, this volume brings together leading and emerging voices working at the intersection of contemporary art, visual culture, activism, and climate change, and addresses key questions, such as: why and how do art and visual culture, and their ethics and values, matter with regard to a world increasingly shaped by climate breakdown? Foregrounding a decolonial and climate-justice-based approach, this book joins efforts within the environmental humanities in seeking to widen considerations of climate change as it intersects with social, political, and cultural realms. It simultaneously expands the nascent branches of ecocritical art history and visual culture, and builds toward the advancement of a robust and critical interdisciplinarity appropriate to the complex entanglements of climate change. This book will be of special interest to scholars and practitioners of contemporary art and visual culture, environmental studies, cultural geography, and political ecology.
