The 18 stories, by some of Brazil's best known authors, all have urban themes. They grapple with modern conflicts in the city such as the lack of communication among neighbors, the vicarious lives many lead, violence, political repression, isolation, and loneliness. Ferreira- Pinto noticed the need for such an anthology while teaching 20th- century Brazilian literature in a US university. He includes a bibliography of fiction, critical works, and English translations and biographical sketches of the authors. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

ENGLISH SYNOPSIS:The Contemporary Brazilian Short Stories (CBSS) initiative was conceived in January 2011, when Brazilian authors of different ages, regions and backgrounds were first contacted about the opportunity to have their work translated into English. In June 2011, we started posting the content to BrazilianShortStories.com, which is updated twice a month, with a new story every 1st and 15th day. The main idea behind presenting this collection online and in book form is to publish the work of contemporary authors from Brazil who have not always had a chance to let their voices be carried to all corners of the world. In translation, the reach of their work in English could be far wider and may bring a piece of Brazil to many readers the world over. And this is exactly the purpose of CBSS: to facilitate the access of international readers to stories written from a Brazilian perspective. Our goal is to touch such varied themes as personal and professional life, love, loneliness, comedy, crime, environment, and random observations of daily routines. Here you'll read twenty-four stories that were originally published online between July 2012 and June 2013. They are organized alphabetically in two sections: The first one is in English, accompanied by the author's biography, and the second one is in the original Portuguese, also displaying the author's contact info.

Oxford Anthology Of The Brazilian Short Story written by K. David Jackson Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Yale University and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-08-03 with Literary Collections categories.

The Oxford Anthology of the Brazilian Short Story contains a selection of short stories by the best-known authors in Brazilian literature from the late nineteenth century to the present. With few exceptions, these stories have appeared in English translation, although widely separated in time and often published in obscure journals. Here they are united in a coherent edition representing Brazil's modern, vibrant literature and culture. J.M. Machado de Assis, who first perfected the genre, wrote at least sixty stories considered to be masterpieces of world literature. Ten of his stories are included here, and are accompanied by strong and diverse representations of the contemporary story in Brazil, featuring nine stories by Clarice Lispector and seven by Joao Guimaraes Rosa. The remaining 34 authors include Mario de Andrade, Graciliano Ramos, Osman Lins, Dalton Trevisan, and other major names whose stories in translation exhibit profound artistry. The anthology is divided into four major periods, "Tropical Belle-Epoque," "Modernism," "Modernism at Mid-Century," and "Contemporary Views." There is a general introduction to Brazilian literary culture and introductions to each of the four sections, with descriptions of the authors and a general bibliography on Brazil and Brazilian literature in English. It includes stories of innovation (Mario de Andrade), psychological suspense (Graciliano Ramos), satire and perversion (Dalton Trevisan), altered realities and perceptions (Murilo Rubiao), repression and sexuality (Hilda Hilst, Autran Dourado), myth (Nelida Pinon), urban life (Lygia Fagundes Telles, Rubem Fonescal), the oral tale (Jorge Amado, Rachel de Queiroz) and other overarching themes and issues of Brazilian culture. The anthology concludes with a haunting story set in the opera theater in Manaus by one of Brazil's most recently successful writers, Milton Hatoum.

Affect And Realism In Contemporary Brazilian Fiction written by Karl Erik Schollhammer and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-05 with categories.

This book is about contemporary Brazilian fiction from the past two decades and concerned with the possibilities of literary intervention in the reality of the historical moment. Thus, an understanding of the actual role of literature is strategic in the definition of the contemporary, and the book shows an optimism among current writers and artists with respect to the aesthetic, ethical, and political role of literature and art in the twentieth century. In contemporary Brazilian prose, two simultaneous ambitions are often reconciled. The commitment to individual or social reality is a challenge that is assumed without thereby necessarily accepting and following the molds of the traditional search for national or cultural identities. This foundation is one of the constants of contemporary prose, without thereby eliminating the continuous existence of a formal experimentalism that is the clearest heir of the modernist project. Recent literary studies of Brazil generally accept that there was a transformation in the 1960s and 1970s, from a narrative mainly situated in regional areas or the backlands, to the appearance of the big city as a contradictory scenario for national literature. Novelists and short story writers who are consolidated at that time encounter in the big cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro a reality that not only brought a promise of modernity, but also produced a civic marginality that came with extreme poverty, violence, and organized crime. In the 1990s and 2000s, a generation of writers appeared who revived programmatic principles of this urban prose and who began the new century with a new demand for the real. Such a demand included references from historical realism and at the same time preserved a desire to experiment aesthetically in search of effects and affects, through a performative writing that was articulated in the translation of the historical temporality, mainly in the exploration of a lived presence. The narratives discussed are situated in a spatial referentiality that abandons the imaginary construction of the nation, an important task of modern literature, in favor of stories that are globalized by exploring ways to include Brazilian culture and language in new international networks.
