Excerpt from Contemporary Composers "We live," wrote Stevenson to Will H. Low in 1884, "in a rum age of music without airs, stories, without incident, pictures without beauty, American wood-engravings that should have been etchings, and dry-point etchings that ought to have been mezzo-tints.... So long as an artist is on his head, is painting with a flute, or writes with an etcher's needle, or conducts the orchestra with a meat-axe, all is well; and plaudits shower along with roses. But any plain man who rites to follow the obtrusive canons of his art, is but a commonplace figure. ... He will have his reward, but he will never be thought a person of parts." Excerpt from Contemporary Russian Composers In regard to the title of this volume I may point out that it is hardly possible to observe the letter of the qualification Contemporary. My readers will no doubt have perceived that certain living composers are writing music which is far less advanced in style than that of other composers who are dead. While entitling this work contemporary russian composers, I have accorded a preferential treatment to music which has some claim to be considered as refleéting the spirit of our time, and I have assumed the pre rogative of ignoring all composers who do not write contemporary music and of dealing briefly with examples whose content is in no further need of exegesis. Excerpt from Great Modern Composers The method of study which has secured so gratifying a reception for The Appreciation of Music has been retained here. The com posers are discussed from the point of view of the listener; their chief qualities are pointed out as they may be noticed by an attentive lay man; and only the rendition and interpreta tion of the examples for analysis require tech nical skill. Excerpt from The Great in Music: A Systematic Course of Study in the Music of Classical and Modern Composers Born at Zelazowa - Wola, Poland, Feb. 22, 1810. Died at Paris Oct. 18, 1849. There are many examples in the history of mankind of the principle that the blending of contrasted races will give rise to finer results than might be derived from either singly. The Egyptians, the Greeks, the Italians, the French, the English, and above all the Americans. Illus trate this doctrine. Frederic Chopin, the most unique figure in music, was of mixed French and Polish blood. His personal character bore witness to the racial traits alike of the French and the Pole, and the whole bodv of his artistic creations no less strikingly re ects this happy dualism of his heredity. When we listen to the music of Chopin, the first thing which attracts our attention is the remarkable way in which contrasted qualities rapidly chase each other, like checker work of sunlight and shadow on some breezy, cloud - mottled dav of midsummer. Laughter, coquetry, badinage, irony, ecstasy, give way to weeping, protest, gloom, fury, despair; and the froth-glitter of iridescent scale passages, many a time, serves as the crest of some dark wave of elemental passion, heaved up from the blackest abysses of the soul. Illustrations are without number; play consecutively the black key study, Op. 10. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Evolution of Modern Orchestration Throughout these pages the achievements of the more prominent composers are set forth in such manner as to indicate not only the distinctive features of 'their orchestration but of their general creative ability as well. In each case, the gen eral style of composition and its significance as a contribution to musical literature are first enlarged upon. This is followed by an examination of the differentiated treatment of the strings, the wood, the brass, presented in logical sequence. A final analysis is then made of the individual method of orchestration as a whole, together with its relative value in the evolution of orchestration. In the Appendix to this book will be found a few musical illustrations selected from representative orchestral scores. Excerpt from Modern Music and Musicians There are many who will be inclined to deny that programme music has a history at all, or at any rate one worth writing, but as a matter of fact the idea that music is capable Of any but an abstract use is far Older than is generally supposed. Nearly four hundred years ago, at a time when music, from our point of view, was barely articulate, Sir Thomas More wrote Of his Utopians: For all their music, both that they play upon instruments and that they sing with man's voice, doth so resemble and express natural affections, the sound and tune is so applied and made agreeable to the thing, that whether it be a prayer or else a ditty of gladness, of patience, of trouble, Of mourning or Of anger, the fashion Of the melody doth so represent the meaning Of the thing, that it doth wonderfully move, stir, pierce and inflame the hearers' minds. Contemporary Composers On Contemporary Music written by Elliott Schwartz and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-06-16 with Music categories.

This anthology of essays, interviews, and autobiographical pieces provides an invaluable overview of the evolution of contemporary music—from chromaticism, serialism, and indeterminacy to jazz, vernacular, electronic, and non-Western influences. Featuring classic essays by Stravinsky, Stockhausen, and Reich, as well as writings by lesser-known but equally innovative composers such as Jack Beeson, Richard Maxfield, and T. J. Anderson, this collection covers a broad range of styles and approaches. Here you will find Busoni's influential "Sketch of a New Esthetic of Music"; Partch's exploration of a new notation system; Babbitt's defense of advanced composition in his controversial "Who Cares If You Listen?"; and Pauline Oliveros's meditations on sound. Now updated with fifteen new composers including Michael Tippet, György Ligeti, Gunther Schuller, Ben Johnston, Sofia Gubaidulina, and William Bolcom, this important book gathers together forty-nine pieces—many out of print and some newly written for this volume—which serve as a documentary history of twentieth-century music, in theory and practice. Impassioned, provocative, and eloquent, these writings are as exciting and diverse as the music they discuss.
