This is the first comprehensive account of feminist politics in Great Britain from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. The authors trace the movement's accomplishments and defeats over four successive conservative government terms. They identify and examine five key areas of British feminist politics--political representation and citizenship, equal employment opportunities, reproductive rights and health, motherhood and childcare, and male violence. In each of these areas, the authors explore both developments in feminist theory and the grass-roots movements.

This book reaches the conclusion that the future of the women's movement depends upon a dialogue which is unafraid to cut across perceived differences. Focusing on key issues raise by a feministic commitment to global political change, this book covers subjects including: * the relevance of contemporary feminist politics for younger women * gendered accounts of genocide and catastrophe * exile, migration and diaspora * gender and the internet * women and the nationalist movement in India * gender issues in Pakistan, Australia, South Africa and the Middle East. Featuring an international panel of cutting-edge feminist thinkers, Global Feminist Politics demonstrates the innovative work being undertaken in the academic and professional worlds, as well as in women's activism. It is an invaluable resource for students in Women's Studies and Development Studies, as well as all those interested in the development of contemporary global feminism.

The chapters in Feminist Politics contest some of the prevailing conceptualizations of identity and difference, as well as the functions of these concepts in feminist political discourse and praxis. Doing so, they amply demonstrate that issues of identity and difference have a central place in contemporary feminist scholarship. The authors of these chapters have worked to develop new ways of understanding and living out differences that will both preserve and celebrate them while also fostering the necessary conditions for opening dialogue and forming new coalitions. These efforts intend to engender imaginative new Strategies for the personal, spiritual, and sociopolitical changes that will enable human growth, well-being, and flourishing. While the focus of the work represented here is understandably on women, the issues that are raised are given additional urgency-explicitly in some of the chapters and implicitly in others-by the situation of their concerns in the context of the world created by the Bush administration. Because that administration has foregrounded issues of identity and difference in ways that are not only inhumane and often inaccurate, but also dangerous for all of us, the new ways of thinking and acting that are proposed here have a much broader application. Thus, these chapters truly invite not only feminists but all people to move in new directions. Taken as a whole, this volume represents cutting-edge thinking from an international perspective in these important and pressing areas for feminist research and praxis. Book jacket.

Feminism And The Abyss Of Freedom written by Linda M. G. Zerilli and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-10-03 with Philosophy categories.

In contemporary feminist theory, the problem of feminine subjectivity persistently appears and reappears as the site that grounds all discussion of feminism. In Feminism and the Abyss of Freedom, Linda M. G. Zerilli argues that the persistence of this subject-centered frame severely limits feminists' capacity to think imaginatively about the central problem of feminist theory and practice: a politics concerned with freedom. Offering both a discussion of feminism in its postmodern context and a critique of contemporary theory, Zerilli here challenges feminists to move away from a theory-based approach, which focuses on securing or contesting "women" as an analytic category of feminism, to one rooted in political action and judgment. She revisits the democratic problem of exclusion from participation in common affairs and elaborates a freedom-centered feminism as the political practice of beginning anew, world-building, and judging. In a series of case studies, Zerilli draws on the political thought of Hannah Arendt to articulate a nonsovereign conception of political freedom and to explore a variety of feminist understandings of freedom in the twentieth century, including ones proposed by Judith Butler, Monique Wittig, and the Milan Women's Bookstore Collective. In so doing, Zerilli hopes to retrieve what Arendt called feminism's lost treasure: the original and radical claim to political freedom.

Destabilizing Theory written by Michèle Barrett and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Social Science categories.

In the past decade the central principles of western feminist theory have been dramatically challenged. Many feminists have endorsed post-structuralism's rejection of essentialist theoretical categories, and have added a powerful gender dimension to contemporary critiques of modernity. Earlier concepts of "gender", "the body", "equality", and "women" have been radically undermined, and newer concerns with "difference", "identity", and "power" have emerged. Destabilizing Theory explores these developments in a set of specially commissioned essays by feminist theorists. Does this change amount to a real shift within feminist theory, or will feminism's links with an emancipatory modernism reinstate an older political agenda? Can we transcend the common counterposition of equality and difference, or is feminism condemned to argue within the terms of this binary opposition? Contributors include Griselda Pollock, Chandra Talpade Mohanty, Rosemary Pringle and Sophie Watson, Moira Gatens, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Sylvia Walby, and Biddy Martin as well as the two editors. The essays deal with subject matter as wide-ranging as the state, experience, art, lesbianism, and the politics of translation, and engage with major debates in philosophy, political theory, and sociology.
