This compendium presents an international showcase of contemporary landscape design between global trends, local traditions, climatic conditions, functional demands, new technologies, economic circumstances, and individual styles: landscape architecture of today heading for tomorrow. A reference work and source of inspiration, this compendium provides an overview of the entire spectrum of this discipline based on projects around the world. Their common denominator is the design of ecologically and socially intact living space. Almost exactly ten years after the publishing of the Atlas of World Landscape Architecture, this new publication takes stock of the developments of the last decade. Whether around, besides, on top of, or even in buildings, in populated areas or in the countryside, landscape architecture develops and designs outdoor spaces for humans as independent creations. It mediates between nature and architecture and connects the grown and the planned habitat, balancing function and aesthetics. Against the backdrop of climate change, the central task today is the conservation of natural resources and the creation of sustainable, high-quality green spaces.

Innovative Design Solutions In Landscape Architecture Steven L. Cantor This comprehensive visual reference presents the full range of landscape architecture practice, from traditional subjects to contemporary applications. The projects are organized by the type of firm, and each firm is represented by several projects, allowing the reader to compare the design process, style, and content of works by the same designers. This volume is an excellent companion to Mr. Cantor's Contemporary Trends in Landscape Architecture, which examines nine compelling new trends in the field. Fifty projects are documented, each in meticulous detail, including site plan, technical illustrations, and construction documents. Each landscape architect contributes his or her own style and personality to these projects, and offers personal insights, anecdotes, and perspective. The book is beautifully illustrated with drawings, high-quality black and white photographs, and a sixteen-page color insert. Innovative Design Solutions in Landscape Architecture documents the ingenious results of solving challenging problems, and emphasizes diversity in its range of project types and examples. For some projects the process that led to a design solution is the most compelling aspect, while other projects draw their strength from the individuality and grace of unusual detailing. Still others are in the middle ground, where idealized design intersects practical construction techniques. The author, a registered landscape architect, employs an interdisciplinary approach that encourages interaction among many professionals, including landscape architects, architects, graphic artists, artists, scientists, economists, urban planners, writers, engineers, and surveyors. The areas of practice, projects, and firms include: The Private Sector-Large Firms Anshen + Allen, Baltimore, MD Clarke + Rapuano Inc., New York City, NY DHM, Denver, CO Carol R. Johnson & Associates, Inc., Cambridge, MA Jones & Jones, Seattle, WA Royston Hanamoto Alley & Abey, Mill Valley, CA The Private Sector-Small and Intermediate Firms Jack Chandler & Associates, Yountville, CA Hargreaves Associates, San Francisco, CA Jacobs/Ryan & Associates, Chicago, IL Elena Saporta/John Taguiri, Cambridge, MA Schmidt Design Group, San Diego, CA Martha Schwartz, Inc., Cambridge, MA SPURLOCK/POIRIER, San Diego, CA The Public and Academic Sector Abyssinian Development Corporation, Harlem, New York City, NY Boston Urban Gardeners, Boston, MA Central Park Conservancy, New York City, NY Prospect Park Alliance, Brooklyn, NY Iowa State University, Ames, IA New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ These diverse examples are followed by a provocative conclusion that examines and discusses principles of project management that encourage and reinforce creative design solutions and problem solving. An inclusive and thoroughly cross-referenced index also assists the process of analyzing project types and making comparisons. The author's meticulous detail, structured organization, and eye-catching illustrations make reading Innovative Design Solutions in Landscape Architecture a pleasurable, enriching, and educational experience. It is an invaluable reference source that provides a wealth of information and insights for years to come.

Gardens In The Modern Landscape written by Christopher Tunnard and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-11 with Architecture categories.

Between 1937 and 1938, garden designer Christopher Tunnard published a series of articles in the British Architectural Review that rejected the prevailing English landscape style. Inspired by the principles of Modernist art and Japanese aesthetics, Tunnard called for a "new technique" in garden design that emphasized an integration of form and purpose. "The functional garden avoids the extremes both of the sentimental expressionism of the wild garden and the intellectual classicism of the 'formal' garden," he wrote; "it embodies rather a spirit of rationalism and through an aesthetic and practical ordering of its units provides a friendly and hospitable milieu for rest and recreation." Tunnard's magazine pieces were republished in book form as Gardens in the Modern Landscape in 1938, and a revised second edition was issued a decade later. Taken together, these articles constituted a manifesto for the modern garden, its influence evident in the work of such figures as Lawrence Halprin, Philip Johnson, and Edward Larrabee Barnes. Long out of print, the book is here reissued in a facsimile of the 1948 edition, accompanied by a contextualizing foreword by John Dixon Hunt. Gardens in the Modern Landscape heralded a sea change in the evolution of twentieth-century design, and it also anticipated questions of urban sprawl, historic preservation, and the dynamic between the natural and built environments. Available once more to students, practitioners, and connoisseurs, it stands as a historical document and an invitation to continued innovative thought about landscape architecture.

The past decade has witnessed new interpretations of the great themes of traditional European garden art in profusion. Drawing on his intensive studies of some 30 influential European projects, Udo Weilacher presents a panorama of the most significant developments since the publication of his groundbreaking work Between Landscape Architecture and Land Art in 1996. Examples of the cooperation between landscape designers and architects are given special attention in case studies taken from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. In addition, US landscape designer Kathryn Gustafson, artists such as Dani Karavan, and the architectural theorist Charles Jencks are featured, along with their European works.
