With work ranging from the extensive "Espacite" multifunctional urban complex in La Chaux-de-Fonds to the small wooden refuge in the forest of the Jura mountains, the firm of Richter et Dahl Rocha has not confined itself to a single category of building. Despite these differences in scale and character, their work can always be seen to reflect the same poetical and rigorous approach. This monograph collects their modern, imaginative architecture in a beautiful tribute to the firm's success.

The Argentine architect Ignacio Dahl Rocha and the Swiss architect Jacques Richter have been regarded as prominent champions of an elegant brand of modernity at least since their design of the Espacité Tower on Place Le Corbusier in La Chaux-de-Fonds and their renovation of Jean Tschumi’s Nestlé corporate headquarters on the shores of Lake Geneva. Their work in the United States and Canada, which began when they were students together at Yale University, is increasingly expanding to include South America as well. In the last fifteen years, they have completed numerous projects, including cultural, educational, administrative, hospital, and residential buildings, primarily in Switzerland but also in Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Argentina. The most important are presented here, in this only current monograph on the firm.

The building which houses the international headquarters of Nestlé SA in Vevey, Switzerland succeeds in conveying the fascination of Swiss post-war modernism like no other. Idyllically located on Lake Geneva, set in a landscaped park, this masterpiece from the renowned architect Jean Tschumi combines the essential features of modern architecture with spaciousness and elegance. Jacques Richter and Ignacio Dahl Rocha have spent many years renovating, modernising and extending this remarkable building. Their transformation has become a manifesto for an intuitive and creative approach to working with historical monuments. This book documents this exemplary building and its recent transformation, touching on a wide range of issues, and providing fascinating glimpses into topics such as Le Corbusier as Nestlé ́s exhibition architect, our approach to historical monuments of the 20th century, the architecture of Jean Tschumi, and the work of Richter and Dahl Rocha.

Global Perspectives On Critical Architecture written by Gevork Hartoonian and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-03 with Architecture categories.

Judging from the debates taking place in both education and practice, it appears that architecture is deeply in crisis. New design and production techniques, together with the globalization of capital and even skilled-labour, have reduced architecture to a commodified object, its aesthetic qualities tapping into the current pervasive desire for the spectacular. These developments have changed the architect’s role in the design and production processes of architecture. Moreover, critical architectural theories, including those of Breton, Heidegger and Benjamin, which explored the concepts of technology, modernism, labour and capital and how technology informed the cultural, along with later theories from the 1960s, which focused more on the architect’s theorization of his/her own design strategies, seem increasingly irrelevant. In an age of digital reproduction and commodification, these theoretical approaches need to be reassessed. Bringing together essays and interviews from leading scholars such as Kenneth Frampton, Peggy Deamer, Bernard Tschumi, Donald Kunze and Marco Biraghi, this volume investigates and critically addresses various dimensions of the present crisis of architecture. It poses questions such as: Is architecture a conservative cultural product servicing a given producer/consumer system? Should architecture’s affiliative ties with capitalism be subjected to a measure of criticism that can be expanded to the entirety of the cultural realm? Is architecture’s infusion into the cultural the reason for the visibility of architecture today? What room does the city leave for architecture beyond the present delirium of spectacle? Should the thematic of various New Left criticisms of capitalism be taken as the premise of architectural criticism? Or alternatively, putting the notion of criticality aside is it enough to confine criticism to the production of insightful and pleasurable texts?

This set of essays brings together studies that challenge interpretations of the development of modernist architecture in Third World countries during the Cold War. The topics look at modernism’s part in the transnational development of building technologies and the construction of national and cultural identity. Architectural modernism is far more than another instance of Western expansionist aspirations; it has been developed in cross-cultural spaces and variously localized into nation-building programs and social welfare projects. The first volume to address countries right across the developing world, this book has a key place in the historiography of modern architecture, dealing with non-Western traditions.

The task of design is to integrate functional requirements, contextual conditions and technological means into the creation of a work of architectural culture. After twenty years of practice, a team involving Ignacio Dahl Rocha, Kenneth Ross, Christian Leibbrand, Manuela Toscan and others of the Lausanne-based Swiss office of Richter ∙ Dahl Rocha & Associés has undertaken to formulate the knowledge behind their architectural practice in a comprehensive manual. Covering the full span from initial design, building typology, technology to the cooperation with other professions in four extensive sections, this book conveys the concepts, methods and details that constitute the tools of state-of-the-art architectural projects. The material used is completely first-hand, with the technical drawings redrawn to this purpose, coming from projects like the much-acclaimed integral renovation of Nestlé Headquarters, from residential, office and healthcare buildings to the groundbreaking Swiss Tech Convention Center on the Lausanne Polytechnic Campus. Written with the editorial collaboration of Denise Bratton, this book sets new standards for architectural publications as tools for design.

This book captures concepts and projects that reshape the discipline of architecture by prioritizing people over buildings. In doing so, it uncovers sophisticated approaches that go beyond standard architectural protocols to explore experience-based aesthetics, encounters, action-based research, critical practices, and social engagement. If these are widely understood as singular or incompatible approaches, the book reveals that they form a growing network of interrelations and generate levels of flexibility and dynamism that are reshaping the discipline. The thirteen chapters analyze thought-provoking projects – branded museums, restaged exhibitions, home/work spaces, multi-cultural spaces, ageing apartment blocks, abandoned homes, and urban slums amongst them. Together, they enliven the stalled debate about a single architectural response to the complex challenges of the contemporary world by highlighting pluralistic perspectives on architecture that offer fresh solutions on how architecture can improve people’s lives. Featuring essays from an international range of authors, this book makes a vital contribution to our understanding of the wider conditions under which, and in relation to which, contemporary architecture is produced.
