Il fascicolo si pone in continuità con il fascicolo Agricoltura e paesaggio, pubblicato nel 2008 a cura di Paolo Baldeschi e Daniela Poli, con l’obbiettivo di completare il quadro, in precedenza delineato, prendendo in esame l’intera complessità del territorio, indipendentemente dai diversi gradi di urbanizzazione e dalle modalità di uso. Agli interventi, articolati nelle due sezioni, Saggi, con contributi a carattere teorico e metodologico, e Ricerche, con esemplificazioni a carattere più marcatamente progettuale, si affiancano, come di consueto, le rubriche Osservatorio regionale, in cui viene dato conto delle politiche toscane sul paesaggio e vengono illustrate le ricerche in corso per la redazione di un quadro unitario dei piani strutturali toscani, e Glossario, a cui segue un’ Appendice dedicata alle strutture di didattica e di ricerca afferenti al dipartimento di urbanistica e pianificazione territoriale dell’ateneo fiorentino che si occupano di paesaggio.

This work discusses the processes and dynamics of the landscapes of the mining industry, of the degraded areas, and of their possibilities for redevelopment through the creation of "new landscapes". The case of abandoned mining areas is seen in the context of the three phases of landscape transformation (previous, contemporary and subsequent to the mining activity), and in the context of the expanse of the regions affected by the phenomenon. The latter led to the hypothesis that the territory enhancement project should be placed within a complex system, whose main features are widespread interventions involving and intercepting both new and consolidated landscape networks.

This book brings together the materials of a study carried out by the Florence Faculty of Architecture in liaison with the Tuscan scientific community (five universities, research institutes and technicians from the Regional Authority) to define the methods and approaches of the new Landscape Plan. The aim was to exploit the opportunities offered by recent legislation, such as the European Landscape Convention and the Cultural Heritage and Landscape Code, in order to formulate public policies and projects designed to enhance the quality of life throughout the entire territory, both valuable and degraded. Different skills, aptitudes and passions have come together in the hope that the recent phase of planning can trigger mechanisms that stimulate the inhabitants of Tuscany to continue to produce the collective work of art that is their landscape, in the exquisitely normal manner and form that left scholars such Desplanques pleasantly perplexed when he wrote: «These people have constructed their rural landscapes as if they had no concern other than beauty.»

This book provides a review of the bioregionalist theory in the field of spatial planning and design as a suitable approach to cope with the growing concerns about the negative effects of metropolization processes and the need for a sustainable transition. The book explores current characteristics of the urban built environment in view of possible future transformations. A cross-reading analysis of existing public social housing buildings is proposed, based on the investigation of their architectural, structural, and energetic characteristics. The study aims to provide an integrated approach that captures the link between typology, construction, and energy demands, offering a key to understanding the main critical issues and transformation readiness. It focuses on large-scale interventions composing public social housing stocks, realized during the second half of the twentieth century. More than other public interventions, such building stocks clearly lack in meeting current housing needs such as modern apartment architectural layout, energy and structural regulations, and social mix. However, due to their numerical presence, strategical and widespread distribution across urban areas, and transformability, these buildings can be the target for future strategic regeneration projects. In particular, the book thoroughly investigates the social housing estate constructed in Rome (Italy) after the approval in 1964 of the first urban economic and social housing plan.
