Excerpt from Context Interchange: Overcoming the Challenges of Large-Scale Interoperable Database Systems in a Dynamic Environment Research in database interoperability has primarily focused on circumventing schematic and semantic incompatibility arising from autonomy of the underlying databases. We argue that, while existing integration strategies might provide satisfactory support for small or static systems, their inadequacies rapidly become evident in large-scale interoperable database systems operating in a dynamic environment. The frequent entry and exit of heterogeneous interoperating agents renders "frozen" interfaces (e.g., shared schemas) impractical and places an ever increasing burden on the system to accord more flexibility to heterogeneous users. User heterogeneity mandates that disparate users' conceptual models and preferences must be accommodated, and the emergence of large-scale networks suggests that the integration strategy must be scalable and capable of dealing with evolving semantics. As an alternative to the integration approaches presented in the literature, we propose a strategy based on the notion of context interchange. In the context interchange framework, assumptions underlying the interpretations attributed to data are explicitly represented in the form of data contexts with respect to a shared ontology. Data exchange in this framework is accompanied by context mediation whereby data originating from multiple source contexts is automatically transformed to comply with the receiver context. The focus on data contexts giving rise to data heterogeneity (as opposed to focusing on data conflicts exclusively) has a number of advantages over classical integration approaches, providing interoperating agents with greater flexibility as well as a framework for graceful evolution and efficient implementation of large-scale interoperable database systems Keywords: context interchange, heterogeneous databases, semantic interoperability, shared ontology. Excerpt from Context Interchange: A Lattice Based Approach The level of semantic data interoperability between a source and a receiver is a function of the context interchange mechanism that operates between the source and the receiver. The semantic interoperability mechanisms in existing systems are usually static in nature and cannot cope up with changes in the semantics of data either at the source or at the receiver. In this paper, we propose a context interchange mechanism, based on lattice theory which can handle changes in the semantics of data at both the source and the receiver. A site-copy selection algorithm is also presented in this paper which selects the set of sources that can supply semantically meaningful data to the query of a particular source. Keywords: semantic-interoperability, context-interchange, lattice theory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Context Interchange Network Prototype The cin approach, as depicted in Figure 2, allows for the explicit representation of source and receiver context knowledge and uses this information along with context mediation services to automatically determine the semantic conflicts between sources and receivers and to apply the appropriate conversions. As will be discussed later this approach is scalable and evolutionary with changes in context knowledge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Context Interchange: Representing and Reasoning About Data Semantics in Heterogeneous Systems The context interchange (coin) strategy 44; 48 presents a novel perspective for mediated data access in which semantic conflicts among heterogeneous systems are not identified a prior, but are detected and reconciled by a Context Mediator through comparison of contexts associated with any two systems engaged in data exchange. In this paper, we present a formal characterization and reconstruction of this strategy in a Coin framework, based on a deductive object-oriented data model and language called Coin. The Coin framework provides a logical formalism for representing data semantics in distinct contexts. We show that this presents a well-founded basis for reasoning about semantic disparities in heterogeneous systems. In addition, it combines the best features of loose and tight-coupling approaches in defining an integration strategy that is scalable, extensible and accessible. These latter features are made possible by allowing complexity of the system to be harnessed in small chunks, by enabling sources and receivers to remain loosely-coupled to one another, and by sustaining an infrastructure for data integration. Keywords: Context, heterogeneous databases, logic and databases, mediators, semantic interoperability. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Data Quality provides an exposé of research and practice in the data quality field for technically oriented readers. It is based on the research conducted at the MIT Total Data Quality Management (TDQM) program and work from other leading research institutions. This book is intended primarily for researchers, practitioners, educators and graduate students in the fields of Computer Science, Information Technology, and other interdisciplinary areas. It forms a theoretical foundation that is both rigorous and relevant for dealing with advanced issues related to data quality. Written with the goal to provide an overview of the cumulated research results from the MIT TDQM research perspective as it relates to database research, this book is an excellent introduction to Ph.D. who wish to further pursue their research in the data quality area. It is also an excellent theoretical introduction to IT professionals who wish to gain insight into theoretical results in the technically-oriented data quality area, and apply some of the key concepts to their practice.
