Fome, desemprego, guerra, pandemia, crise climática, líderes autoritários... O mundo vive hoje muitas desventuras. E uma delas, não listada na primeira frase deste editorial, detém uma altíssima periculosidade, porque, além de não resolver os problemas anteriores, tem o potencial de agravá-los. Estamos falando do negacionismo. Esse comportamento não é novo no ser humano, mas, na vida contemporânea, ironicamente ultraconectada e com acesso facilitado e infinito a informações, tornou-se frequente e vem pautando sociedades e governos, abalando a confiança nas instituições científicas, democráticas e provocando, inclusive, mortes – como o movimento antivacina nas mídias digitais, que interferiu no combate ao Sars-Cov-2, sendo responsável por uma importante parcela dos óbitos pela Covid-19 no Brasil e no mundo. Diante da urgência e gravidade do tema, a Continente deste mês traz reportagem que aborda a origem, as consequências e os aspectos do negacionismo. As repórteres especiais Débora Nascimento e Luciana Veras conversaram com especialistas que analisaram o comportamento, cuja palavra, no ano passado, foi dicionarizada pela Academia Brasileira de Letras e é analisado em dezenas de verbetes assinados por autores diversos, no Dicionário dos negacionismos no Brasil, lançado pela Cepe Editora. A matéria também engloba o papel das redes sociais, dos gabinetes do ódio e das máquinas de fake news, que alimentam o negacionismo, baseado em ignorância e preconceito. "Nos grupos reacionários, você tem a radicalidade da extrema direita, o antiglobalismo, o negacionismo reforçado pela agenda conservadora de costumes e uma posição antigênero, antiLGBT, antidireitos sexuais e reprodutivos. O negacionismo é um vetor nesse conjunto, uma força a mais dando legitimidade a essa forma de pensar que é de uma parte da nossa sociedade já imersa num processo de fascistização", afirma o sociólogo José Szwako, coorganizador do Dicionário com José Luiz Ratton, destacando um dos aspectos dessa discussão de suma importância, principalmente em um ano de eleição presidencial determinante.

Em março e abril, convidamos nossos leitores a percorrerem conosco os bairros fundadores do Recife. Inicialmente, caminhamos ao lado do jornalista Romero Rafael pelo Bairro do Recife; depois foi a vez da poeta Odailta Alves nos levar por um passeio pela chamada Ilha de Antônio Vaz, mais especificamente pelos bairros de São José e Santo Antônio. Agora, encerramos a série percorrendo junto ao escritor e jornalista Homero Fonseca o Bairro da Boa Vista. Nesses percursos, os autores foram acompanhados pelos desenhos do artista visual Jeims Duarte, que assina a capa desta edição. "Até meados do século XVII, a região quase não era habitada (...). Tudo começou a mudar quando o alemão Maurício de Nassau, governador das possessões holandesas no Brasil, resolveu erguer uma casa de veraneio, de frente para o continente. Encantado com a paisagem do outro lado do rio, batizou seu novo palácio de Schoonzicht, que sofreu uma alteração semântica (visão limpa > bela vista > boa vista) e acabou batizando o bairro nascente", escreve Homero, contando-nos de onde vem o nome desse bairro polifônico, que, talvez por isso, como nenhum outro na cidade, congregue o antigo e o moderno de modo tão imbricado. Seguindo adiante nesse Recife continental, os arrabaldes, os trilhos da maxambomba, outros povoamentos que acompanham o curso do Capibaribe. Derby, Madalena, Torre, Casa Forte, Apipucos ... Recebemos o convite para cobrir a 19a edição da SP-Arte, a maior feira de artes visuais da América Latina, realizada entre 29 de março e 2 de abril. A repórter especial Luciana Veras foi então enviada para São Paulo com uma pergunta que nos inquietava: haveria, na arte contemporânea brasileira, uma prevalência atual do figurativismo? No trabalho de artistas das novas gerações, como Antonio Obá, Clara Moreira, Marcela Cantuária e Rafael Prado, a figura ganha peso com o intuito de decolonizar o olhar e discutir questões como o feminicídio, o racismo, a permanência da escravidão. Uma obra de arte nunca está encerrada em si. Além da concepção do artista, se completa com o olhar do público – e, portanto, a percepção sobre ela é moldada por vários fatores, como o momento histórico, os costumes e valores de uma época e os afetos e memórias que atravessam o espectador. Assim, a arte e a cultura estão (ainda bem) sempre passíveis a novas interpretações, especialmente quando se abre espaço para a pluralidade de vivências. Na reportagem de capa deste mês, a repórter especial Débora Nascimento se debruça sobre a complexidade do assunto e como o revisionismo, tema tão discutido nos dias de hoje, é parte natural das disputas narrativas. Ao colocar em xeque elementos problemáticos de uma obra, como a naturalização de estereótipos raciais, de gênero, sexualidade, entre outros, pode-se fomentar o diálogo sobre questões estruturais da nossa sociedade, no passado e no presente. Nesse movimento, músicas, livros, filmes, quadros, monumentos, entre outros, têm sido alvo de debates acalorados sobre suas mensagens e valores. Com as redes sociais e suas possibilidades de ecoar vozes de grupos historicamente silenciados, abrem-se novos caminhos para a representatividade e, com isso, clássicos têm passado por revisão e, muitos deles, condenados a um ostracismo futuro. Como mostra a matéria, repensar símbolos e ressignificar nossa visão de mundo é um movimento constante. Pensemos, por exemplo, no Bicentenário da Independência do Brasil, que acontecerá em setembro. Para o escritor, professor e historiador Luiz Antonio Simas, em entrevista à repórter especial Luciana Veras, nessa data, deveríamos promover uma "descomemoração", ou seja, repensá-la, fazer uma autópsia do processo e entendê-lo em suas várias facetas. "Não acredito em isenção na História. Faço História engajada com um processo de transformação social", afirma. Ao perceber os processos de mudanças culturais para além de uma divisão binária entre bem e mal, podemos compreender o nosso e outros tempos de uma maneira mais holística. É por esse prisma que a pesquisadora Carolina Dantas analisa o TikTok no artigo deste mês – o aplicativo que já conta com mais de 1 bilhão de usuários e que tem reconfigurado mecanismos da cultura, política e modelos de comportamento. Biodiversity, sometimes simply understood as "diversity of species", is a specific quality of life on our planet, the dimensions and importance of which have just lately been fully realized. Today we know that "biological diversity is a global asset of incalculable value to present and future generations" (Kofi Annan). Biodiversity is spread unequally over the world: in fact, the main share of biological resources worldwide is harboured predominantly by the so-called developing countries in the tropics and sub tropics. Therefore, Biodiversity - A Challenge for Development Research and Policy was chosen as the title for an international conference which was held in Bonn in 1997 as one of the first major events organized by the then newly established North-South Centre for Development Research (ZEF) at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universitat Bonn (Germany). Since the ZEF, founded by the Senate of the University of Bonn in 1995, has played a central role in turning Bonn into a centre for international cooperation and North-South dialogue. The Centre is a product of the Bonn Berlin agreement of July 1994 which was adopted to offset the effects caused by the Parliament and much of the Government moving to Berlin. It fits in well with the double strategy to strengthen Bonn's position as an interna tional science arena and as an eminent place for development policy and the national and supranational agencies dealing with this issue.

Food is fundamental to health and social participation, yet food poverty has increased in the global North. Adopting a realist ontology and taking a comparative case approach, Families and Food in Hard Times addresses the global problem of economic retrenchment and how those most affected are those with the least resources. Based on research carried out with low-income families with children aged 11-15, this timely book examines food poverty in the UK, Portugal and Norway in the decade following the 2008 financial crisis. It examines the resources to which families have access in relation to public policies, local institutions and kinship and friendship networks, and how they intersect. Through ‘thick description’ of families’ everyday lives, it explores the ways in which low income impacts upon practices of household food provisioning, the types of formal and informal support on which families draw to get by, the provision and role of school meals in children’s lives, and the constraints upon families’ social participation involving food. Providing extensive and intensive knowledge concerning the conditions and experiences of low-income parents as they endeavour to feed their families, as well as children’s perspectives of food and eating in the context of low income, the book also draws on the European social science literature on food and families to shed light on the causes and consequences of food poverty in austerity Europe.

This readable book presents a new general theoretical understanding of politeness. It offers an account of a wide range of politeness phenomena in English, illustrated by hundreds of examples of actual language use taken largely from authentic British and American sources. Building on his earlier pioneering work on politeness, Geoffrey Leech takes a pragmatic approach that is based on the controversial notion that politeness is communicative altruism. Leech's 1983 book, Principles of Pragmatics, introduced the now widely-accepted distinction between pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic aspects of politeness; this book returns to the pragmalinguistic side, somewhat neglected in recent work. Drawing on neo-Gricean thinking, Leech rejects the prevalent view that it is impossible to apply the terms 'polite' or 'impolite' to linguistic phenomena. Leech covers all major speech acts that are either positively or negatively associated with politeness, such as requests, apologies, compliments, offers, criticisms, good wishes, condolences, congratulations, agreement, and disagreement. Additional chapters deal with impoliteness and the related phenomena of irony ("mock politeness") and banter ("mock impoliteness"), and with the role of politeness in the learning of English as a second language. A final chapter takes a fascinating look at more than a thousand years of history of politeness in the English language.
