Four experiments address the degree of top-down selectivity in attention capture by feature singletons through manipulations of the spatial relationship and featural similarity of target and distractor singletons in a modified spatial cuing paradigm. Contrary to previous studies, all four experiments show that when searching for a singleton target, an irrelevant featural singleton captures attention only when defined by the same feature value as the target. Experiments 2, 3, and 4 provide a potential explanation for this empirical discrepancy by showing that irrelevant singletons can produce distraction effects that are independent of shifts of spatial attention. The results further support the notion that attentional capture is contingent on top-down attention control settings but indicates that such settings can be instantiated at the level of feature values. Over the last decade there has been a spate of research on the empirical phenomenon known as "attentional capture". Interest in capture can be attributed not only to its applied significance, but also to the implications of the phenomenon for theories of selective attention, as well as cognitive control in general. This growing interest, however, has also spawned a wide variety of experimental paradigms, empirical results, and theoretical perspectives. In June of 2000, 40 experimental psychologists converged on Villanova University for a conference and workshop on attentional capture. The intent was to provide an intimate forum for scientists from diverse perspectives and backgrounds, and using diverse methodologies to present their research on attentional capture and also engage in small group discussions on such key issues as the definition, measurement, and theoretical treatment of attention capture. This book presents a collection of chapters based on those presentations and discussions. Chapters are organized around areas such as neuroscience, visual cognition, developmental, individual differences and dynamical systems. The volume provides: a summary of the latest cutting edge research; an important compass for future research in this area; a useful survey of the field; contributions from internationally recognized experts in attention. Due to its exclusive focus on the topic of attentional capture the volume should make an excellent supplemental text or reference book for advanced undergraduate or graduate seminars in cognitive psychology and attention.

Researchers have studied contingent attentional capture for over two decades, and have characterized the behavioural effects; but a complete understanding of the neural mechanisms involved has yet to be developed. This thesis investigated the neural underpinnings of the cue-validity effect in the contingent capture paradigm. Recent research purported to show that observers inadvertently attend to irrelevant cue items that possess a task relevant feature (indexed by the ERP component, the N2pc), and then suppress the location of that cue item in order to respond to the target (indicated by the ERP component the PD, believed to index suppression). Experiment 1 determined whether the attended cue was in actuality suppressed; whereas, Experiment 2 determined how selection of the cue item affects higher stages of visual processing. Results showed that reaction time costs were due to extraneously cued nontarget information entering working memory, thus delaying target processing on invalid trials.

The notion that certain mental or physical events can capture attention has been one of the most enduring topics in the study of attention owing to the importance of understanding how goal-directed and stimulus-driven processes interact in perception and cognition. Despite the clear theoretical and applied importance of attentional capture, a broad survey of this field suggests that the term "capture" means different things to different people. In some cases, it refers to covert shifts of spatial attention, in others involuntary saccades, and in still others general disruption of processing by irrelevant stimuli. The properties that elicit "capture" can also range from abruptly onset or moving lights, to discontinuities in textures, to unexpected tones, to emotionally valenced words or pictures, to directional signs and symbols. Attentional capture has been explored in both the spatial and temporal domains as well as the visual and auditory modalities. There are also a number of different theoretical perspectives on the mechanisms underlying "capture" (both functional and neurophysiological) and the level of cognitive control over capture. This special issue provides a sampling of the diversity of approaches, domains, and theoretical perspectives that currently exist in the study of attentional capture. Together, these contributions should help evaluate the degree to which attentional capture represents a unitary construct that reflects fundamental theoretical principles and mechanisms of the mind.

Transient visual stimuli are known to capture covert spatial attention. This capture of attention only occurs, however, if the stimuli match the attentional control settings of the observer. While covert attentional capture is always contingent on attentional control settings, overt attentional capture (the capture of oculomotor programming) is not. For example, changes in luminance may produce oculomotor capture regardless of the goal state of the observer. The present research delineates the extent to which attentional control settings can be used to control the oculomotor system. Two experiments were implemented to investigate different components of the oculomotor system. In Experiment 1, saccade generation was examined through saccadic trajectory deviations and the remote distractor effect. In Experiment 2, saccade generation was examined through the gap effect. It was found that, while attentional control settings could be employed to completely abolish the remote distractor effect, attentional control settings could only attenuate trajectory deviations and had no influence on the gap effect.

We have long known that unexpected salient properties of our visual environments, like the flashing lights on an ambulance, capture our spatial attention, leading to faster processing of objects appearing in the same spatial location as compared to objects appearing elsewhere. One of the more provocative discoveries of the attentional capture literature is that spatial capture can be constrained by our voluntary goals, or Attentional Control Settings (ACSs). ACSs determine which stimuli or stimulus properties capture spatial attention: When looking for a red object, the unexpected appearance of other red objects will capture attention, while, importantly, the unexpected appearance of green objects will not. Current conceptualizations of ACSs, however, constrain their role in the support of more complex behaviours: The number of items contained within ACSs is believed to be limited to one, perhaps two items, and the role of voluntary control in the implementation of these ACSs (i.e., whether we are able to directly choose what items capture attention) has been challenged by a feature priming model (i.e., prior experience responding to task targets determines what items capture attention). The purpose of this thesis was to examine whether ACSs are more flexible than outlined in current literature in terms of the number of representations they comprise and in the implementation of ACSs. Chapters 1 to 5 used modified spatial capture paradigms to demonstrate that standard measures of spatial capture were contingent on ACSs for up to 30 items stored in episodic long-term memory. Chapters 6 and 7 then contrasted a voluntary model of ACS implementation against a feature priming model. Here, manipulations of feature priming had limited influence on contingent capture; instead, behaviour adhered more closely to a voluntary implementation account, and point towards a potential role for target selection in the maintenance (rather than implementation) of ACSs. These studies re-conceptualize our understanding of ACSs with regard to both the role of the memory systems supporting the contents of ACSs, and of voluntary control in driving the implementation of ACSs, while contributing to the on-going development of more comprehensive models of this sophisticated attentional mechanism of control over capture.
