The continuation of an expression is a portion of its surrounding context. This book proposes and defends the continuation hypothesis: that the meaning of a natural language expression can depend on its own continuation (it can denote a function on its surrounding context).

This book presents several recent advances in natural language semantics and explores the boundaries between syntax and semantics over the last two decades. It is based on some of the most recent theories in logic, such as linear logic and ludics, first created by Jean-Yves Girard, and it also provides some sharp analyses of computational semantical representations, explaining advanced theories in theoretical computer sciences, such as the lambda-mu and Lambek-Grishin calculi which were applied by Philippe de Groote and Michael Moortgat. The author also looks at Aarne Ranta's ‘proof as meaning’ approach, which was first based on Martin-Löf's Type Theory.Meaning, Logic and Ludics surveys the many solutions which have been proposed for the syntax-semantics interface, taking into account the specifications of linguistic signs (continuous or discontinuous) and the fundamental mechanisms developed by linguists and notable Generativists. This pioneering publication also presents ludics (in a chapter co-authored with Myriam Quatrini), a framework which allows us to characterize meaning as an invariant with regard to interaction between processes. It is an excellent book for advanced students, and academics alike, in the field of computational linguistics./a

Computation Of Language written by Roland Hausser and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Computers categories.

The study of linguistics has been forever changed by the advent of the computer. Not only does the machine permit the processing of enormous quantities of text thereby securing a better empirical foundation for conclusions-but also, since it is a modelling device, the machine allows the implementation of theories of grammar and other kinds of language processing. Models can have very unexpected properties both good and bad-and it is only through extensive tests that the value of a model can be properly assessed. The computer revolution has been going on for many years, and its importance for linguistics was recognized early on, but the more recent spread of personal workstations has made it a reality that can no longer be ignored by anyone in the subject. The present essay, in particular, could never have been written without the aid of the computer. I know personally from conversations and consultations with the author over many months how the book has changed. If he did not have at his command a powerful typesetting program, he would not have been able to see how his writing looked and exactly how it had to be revised and amplified. Even more significant for the evolution of the linguistic theory is the easy testing of examples made possible by the implementation of the parser and the computer-held lexicon. Indeed, the rule set and lexicon grew substantially after the successes of the early implementations created the desire to incorporate more linguistic phenomena.

Logical Aspects Of Computational Linguistics written by Nicholas Asher and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-16 with Computers categories.

Edited in collaboration with FoLLI, the Association of Logic, Language and Information, this book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Logical Aspects of Computational Linguistics (LACL 2014) held in Toulouse, France, in June 2014. On the broadly syntactic side, there are papers on the logical and computational foundations of context free grammars, pregroup grammars, on the Lambek calculus and on formalizations of aspects of minimalism. There is also a paper on Abstract Categorical Grammar, as well as papers on issues at the syntax/semantics interface. On the semantic side, the volume's papers address monotonicity reasoning and the semantics of adverbs in type theory, proof theoretical semantics and predicate and argument invariance.

This book focuses mainly on logical approaches to computational linguistics, but also discusses integrations with other approaches, presenting both classic and newly emerging theories and applications.Decades of research on theoretical work and practical applications have demonstrated that computational linguistics is a distinctively interdisciplinary area. There is convincing evidence that computational approaches to linguistics can benefit from research on the nature of human language, including from the perspective of its evolution. This book addresses various topics in computational theories of human language, covering grammar, syntax, and semantics. The common thread running through the research presented is the role of computer science, mathematical logic and other subjects of mathematics in computational linguistics and natural language processing (NLP). Promoting intelligent approaches to artificial intelligence (AI) and NLP, the book is intended for researchers and graduate students in the field.
