Continuous casting is an industrial process whereby molten metal is solidified into a semi-finished billet, bloom, or slab for subsequent rolling in finishing mills; it is the most frequently used process to cast not only steel, but also aluminium and copper alloys. Since its widespread introduction for steel in the 1950s, it has evolved to achieve improved yield, quality, productivity and cost efficiency. It allows lower-cost production of metal sections with better quality, due to the inherently lower costs of continuous, standardized production of a product, as well as providing increased control over the process through automation. Nevertheless, challenges remain and new ones appear, as ways are sought to minimize casting defects and to cast alloys that could originally only be cast via other means. This Special Issue of the journal "Metals" consists of 14 research articles that cover many aspects of experimental work and theoretical modelling related to the ongoing development of continuous casting processes.

Solidification End Reduction Of Continuous Casting Process written by Cheng Ji and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-08-16 with Technology & Engineering categories.
This book summarizes the formation of solidification defects in continuous casting strand and the process mechanism of improving central segregation, porosity and shrinkage under solidification end reduction. The behavior rules of shell deformation, crack initiation and propagation, solute transport, shrinkage cavity closure, microstructure refinement and evolution during solidification end reduction process were systematically expounded. It introduces how to realize the accurate, efficient and stable implementation of the solidification end reduction in the production process, and the design and development of key equipment. Finally, taking the specific production lines of Baosteel and Panzhihua Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. as examples, the industrial application and effect of solidification end reduction technology are listed.

In this book, the formation causes and the control principles of the surface crack defects of micro-alloyed steel slab, such as the transverse corner cracks, longitudinal depressions in the wide-face off-corners, and the hot charging cracks were discussed. On this basis, the key technologies for the slab surface defects control were proposed. The contents of the book included the control technology for the transverse corner crack of conventional and wide and thick slabs of micro-alloyed steel, the control technology for thin slab corner crack of micro-alloyed steel, the control technology for wide-face longitudinal off-corner depression of thick slab, as well as the control technology for hot charging crack of micro-alloyed steel slab. This book can be read for the technical developers and scientific researchers engaged in slab continuous casting production of steel, and can also be used as a reference for teachers and students in colleges and universities of related majors.
