Continuous images of ordered continua are investigated. The paper gives various properties of their monotone images and inverse limits of their inverse systems (or sequences) with monotone bonding surjections. Some factorization theorems are provided. Special attention is given to one-dimensional spaces which are continuous images of arcs and, among them, various classes of rim-finite continua. The methods of proofs include cyclic element theory, T-set approximations and null-family decompositions. The paper brings also new properties of cyclic elements and T-sets in locally connected continua, in general.

Continuous images of ordered continua have been studied intensively since 1960, when S. Mardvsic showed that the classical Hahn-Mazurkiewicz theorem does not generalize in the natural way to the nonmetric case. In 1986, Nikiel characterized acyclic images of arcs as continua which can be approximated from within by a sequence of well-placed subsets which he called T-sets. That characterization has been used to answer a host of outstanding questions in the area. In this book, Nikiel, Tymchatyn and Tuncali study images of arcs using T-set approximations and inverse limits with monotone bonding maps. A number of important theorems on Peano continua are extended to images of arcs.

Orthogonal Decompositions And Functional Limit Theorems For Random Graph Statistics written by Svante Janson and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Mathematics categories.

We define an orthogonal basis in the space of real-valued functions of a random graph, and prove a functional limit theorem for this basis. Limit theorems for other functions then follow by decomposition. The results include limit theorems for the two random graph models [italic]G[subscript italic]n, [subscript italic]p and [italic]G[subscript italic]n, [subscript italic]m as well as functional limit theorems for the evolution of a random graph and results on the maximum of a function during the evolution. Both normal and non-normal limits are obtained. As examples, applications are given to subgraph counts and to vertex degrees.

This work presents a detailed study of the anisotropic series representations of the free product group Z/2Z*...*Z/2Z. These representations are infinite dimensional, irreducible, and unitary and can be divided into principal and complementary series. Anisotropic series representations are interesting because, while they are not restricted from any larger continuous group in which the discrete group is a lattice, they nonetheless share many properties of such restrictions. The results of this work are also valid for nonabelian free groups on finitely many generators.

First we investigate the structure of Lie algebras with invariant cones and give a characterization of those Lie algebras containing pointed and generating invariant cones. Then we study the global structure of invariant Lie semigroups, and how far Lie's third theorem remains true for invariant cones and Lie semigroups.

We examine the general problem of computing characteristic invariants of principal bundles whose structural group [italic capital]G is a topological group. Under the hypothesis that [italic capital]G has real cohomology finitely generated as an [bold]R-module, we are able to give a completely topological, local method for computing representative cocycles for real characteristic classes; our method applies, for example, to the (homologically) 10-dimensional non-Lie group of Hilton-Roitberg-Stasheff.

In this paper, we discuss the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behavior of positive solutions of the equation −[capital Greek]Delta[italic]u = [lowercase Greek]Lambda[function]ƒ([italic]u) in [capital Greek]Omega[surmounted by macron] [times symbol] [−[italic]n, [italic]n], [and] [italic]u = 0 on [partial derivative/boundary/degree of a polynomial symbol]([capital Greek]Omega[surmounted by macron] [times symbol] [−[italic]n, [italic]n]) for [italic]n large. Here [capital Greek]Omega[surmounted by macron] is a bounded domain in [italic capital]R[superscript italic]k with smooth boundary. Note that by rescaling the equation (including [lowercase Greek]Lambda), our theory covers problems on domains ([set membership symbol][capital Greek]Omega[surmounted by macron]) [times symbol] [−1,1] where [set membership symbol] is small.

Duality And Definability In First Order Logic written by Michael Makkai and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Mathematics categories.

We develop a duality theory for small Boolean pretoposes in which the dual of the [italic capital]T is the groupoid of models of a Boolean pretopos [italic capital]T equipped with additional structure derived from ultraproducts. The duality theorem states that any small Boolean pretopos is canonically equivalent to its double dual. We use a strong version of the duality theorem to prove the so-called descent theorem for Boolean pretoposes which says that category of descent data derived from a conservative pretopos morphism between Boolean pretoposes is canonically equivalent to the domain-pretopos. The descent theorem contains the Beth definability theorem for classical first order logic. Moreover, it gives, via the standard translation from the language of categories to symbolic logic, a new definability theorem for classical first order logic concerning set-valued functors on models, expressible in purely syntactical (arithmetical) terms.

Recent Progress In General Topology Ii written by M. Husek and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-11-13 with Mathematics categories.

The book presents surveys describing recent developments in most of the primary subfields of General Topology and its applications to Algebra and Analysis during the last decade. It follows freely the previous edition (North Holland, 1992), Open Problems in Topology (North Holland, 1990) and Handbook of Set-Theoretic Topology (North Holland, 1984). The book was prepared in connection with the Prague Topological Symposium, held in 2001. During the last 10 years the focus in General Topology changed and therefore the selection of topics differs slightly from those chosen in 1992. The following areas experienced significant developments: Topological Groups, Function Spaces, Dimension Theory, Hyperspaces, Selections, Geometric Topology (including Infinite-Dimensional Topology and the Geometry of Banach Spaces). Of course, not every important topic could be included in this book. Except surveys, the book contains several historical essays written by such eminent topologists as: R.D. Anderson, W.W. Comfort, M. Henriksen, S. Mardeŝić, J. Nagata, M.E. Rudin, J.M. Smirnov (several reminiscences of L. Vietoris are added). In addition to extensive author and subject indexes, a list of all problems and questions posed in this book are added. List of all authors of surveys: A. Arhangel'skii, J. Baker and K. Kunen, H. Bennett and D. Lutzer, J. Dijkstra and J. van Mill, A. Dow, E. Glasner, G. Godefroy, G. Gruenhage, N. Hindman and D. Strauss, L. Hola and J. Pelant, K. Kawamura, H.-P. Kuenzi, W. Marciszewski, K. Martin and M. Mislove and M. Reed, R. Pol and H. Torunczyk, D. Repovs and P. Semenov, D. Shakhmatov, S. Solecki, M. Tkachenko.
