Recently, continuously variable transmission (CVT) has been much more applied in vehicles as it has several advantages such as smoothly gear changing and allowing engine operate at optimum speed. However, there are some important drawbacks which are low efficiency power transmission, especially at low speed (high torque) condition, limited belt torque capacity, and narrow overall gear ratio range, with which the CVT is limited to use in only small vehicles. To overcome these weak points and simultaneously keep the advantages of CVT, a planetary gear train (PGT) and a step gear box are implemented to the traditional CVT system called continuously variable power split transmission (CVPST) with step gear box system. The power from the engine will be separated into two ways; PGT and CVT. As the higher efficiency of PGT than CVT, the overall system efficiency will increase. Also, because only a part of the total power will go through the CVT set, the torque capacity of the overall system can be extended. The additional step gear box is used to enhance the overall gear ratio range. By simulation, the fuel economy and 0-60 time performance of both transmissions can be compared.

"This thesis is to research the possibility of improving the performance of continuously variable transmission (CVT) used in small vehicles (such as ATVs, snowmobiles, golf carts, and SAE Baja cars) via controlled actuation of the CVT. These small vehicles commonly use a purely mechanically controlled CVT that relies on weight springs and cams actuated based on the rotational speed on the unit. Although these mechanically actuated CBTs offer an advantage over manual transmissions in performance via automatic operation, they can't reach the full potential of a CVT. A hydraulically actuated CVT can be precisely controlled in order to maximize the performance and fuel efficiency but a price has to be paid for the energy required to constantly operate the hydraulics. Unfortunately, for small vehicles the power required to run a hydraulically actuated CVT may outweigh the gain in CVT efficiency. The goal of this thesis is to show how an electromechanically actuated CVT can maximize the efficiency of a CVT transmission without requiring too much power to operate."--Abstract.

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a type of transmission that allows an infinitely variable ratio change within a finite range, allowing the engine to continuously operate in an efficient or high performance range. A brief history of CVTs is presented, including the families under which they can be categorized. A new family of CVTs, with the classification of positive engagement, is presented. Three different published embodiments of CVTs of the positive engagement type are presented describing a meshing problem that exists apparently regardless of the embodiment in this family. The problem is called the non-integer tooth problem and its occurrences are detailed in each of the three embodiments. Specific solutions to the problem, as embodied in each case, are presented. The proposed embodiment of a new, positive engagement, continuously variable transmission is described in detail with the derived general kinematic equations of its motion. The kinematic equations for two variant embodiments are also derived. The results of the meshing analysis for this new embodiment are given and the non-integer tooth problem is exposed in three different operating conditions of the CVT. Characteristics of a solution to the non-integer tooth problem are then described, which are applicable to the positive engagement family in general.
