Continuum Electromechanics written by James R. Melcher and has been published by MIT Press (MA) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1981-01 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Designed to be used as a graduate-level text and as an engineering reference work, "Continuum Electromechanics" presents a comprehensive development of its subject--the interaction of electromagnetic forces and ponderable media, the mechanical responses to electromagnetic fields, and the reciprocal effects of the material motions produced by those fields. The author's approach is highly interdisciplinary, and he introduces fundamental concepts from such subjects as electrohydrodynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, plasma physics, electron beam engineering, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and physical chemistry. The applications of continuum electromechanics are also remarkably diverse, and many of them are treated in the book, both because of their intrinsic engineering importance and as a means of illustrating basic principles. Among these applications are the design of rotating machines and synchronous generators, polymer processing, magnetic melting and pumping in metallurgical operations, the processing of plastics and glass, the manufacture of synthetic fibers, inductive and dielectric heating, thermal-to-electrical energy conversion, the control of air pollution, the design of controlled-fusion devices, image processing and printing, the magnetic levitation and propulsion of vehicles, the study of films and membranes, and the analysis of the complex electrokinetic and physicochemical processes that underlie the sensing and motor functions of biological systems. Many of these applications are presented in the form of problems. The book consists of eleven chapters, entitled Introduction to Continuum Electromechanics; Electrodynamic Laws; Approximations, and Relations; Electromagnetic Forces, Force Densities, and Stress Tensors; Electromechanical Kinematics; Energy-Conversion Models and Processes; Charge Migration, Convection, and Relaxation; Magnetic Diffusion and Induction Interactions; Laws, Approximations, and Relations of Fluid Mechanics Statics and Dynamics of Systems Having a Static Equilibrium; Electromechanical Flows; Electromechanics with Thermal and Molecular Diffusion; and Streaming Interactions.

Offering a consistent, systematic approach to capacitive, piezoelectric and magnetic MEMS, from basic electromechanical transducers to high-level models for sensors and actuators, this comprehensive textbook equips graduate and senior-level undergraduate students with all the resources necessary to design and develop practical, system-level MEMS models. The concise yet thorough treatment of the underlying principles of electromechanical transduction provides a solid theoretical framework for this development, with each new topic related back to the core concepts. Repeated references to the shared commonalities of all MEMS encourage students to develop a systems-based design perspective. Extensive use is made of easy-to-interpret electrical and mechanical analogs, such as electrical circuits, electromechanical two-port models and the cascade paradigm. Each chapter features worked examples and numerous problems, all designed to test and extend students' understanding of the key principles.

This book highlights the important use of digital technologies and the latest developments in mechanical and industrial engineering to enhance environmental and resource sustainability. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have as their overarching objective the reduction or eradication of a wide range of global problems, including, but not limited to poverty, climate change, environmental degradation, and inequality. Digital technologies (DTs) have the potential to be exploited to meet the goals associated with the circular economy (CE) and sustainable development. Additive manufacturing (AM), cyber-physical systems (CPS), and blockchain technology are examples of DT-enabled technologies that are helpful for businesses that seek to shift to a circular economic model. With the remanufacturing of products, applications that make use of virtual reality and augmented reality, in addition to the Internet of Things, simplify the construction of strategic decision models that reduce time and expense while simultaneously increasing productivity. In addition, the utilization of big data analytics helps businesses discover previously undisclosed trends and unlock numerous opportunities for environmental and resource sustainability. Employing analytics makes it feasible to collect helpful information regarding the socio-environmental impact of a product, as well as consumption factors over the entirety of a product’s life cycle. This book contains 44 comprehensive chapters and is divided into five parts. Part 1 delves deeply into sustainable operational practices and supply chain management. The impact that digital technology-enabled operational techniques have on product life cycles is investigated, as well as the design of efficient remanufacturing processes, environmentally friendly logistics and warehousing practices, sustainable designs for distributed energy supply systems, and efficient recycling procedures. Part 2 provides a perspective on advanced materials and developments for sustainable manufacturing. The chapters in this section address sustainable material development and its application in the circular economy concept. Included here is an in-depth exploration of cutting-edge technology for synthesis, processing, fabrication, process optimization, testing, and performance evaluation of advanced materials. Part 3 covers sustainable manufacturing practices and looks at the problems faced by the industry when using digital technologies in their operations, as well as the possible benefits. Part 4 examines sustainable innovation in mechanical design. It addresses all aspects of mechanical design that contribute to sustainable innovation for nation-building. Part 5 delves into heat transfer and fluid flow concepts for sustainable product development and applications. The chapters explain how to construct sustainable energy systems by reducing the total amount of energy that is utilized, enhancing the efficiency of the process of energy conversion, and making use of sources of energy that are renewable. Audience This book has a wide audience in academic institutions and engineers in a variety of manufacturing industries. It will also appeal to economists and policymakers working on the circular economy, clean tech investors, industrial decision-makers, and environmental professionals.

The book promotes new research results in the field of modern actuators and their applications. New coverage of dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators, polymeric microgripper based on the cascaded V-shaped electrothermal actuators, ionic polymer actuators, wideband actuators and energy harvesters, electromagnetic actuators and shape memory alloy actuators are comprehended. The book is structured in four sections: design, fabrication and simulation; control systems; medical applications and fault detection. Seven chapters are published following a rigorous selection process. In the first section, a study carried out to investigate experimentally and by numerical simulations a microscale plasma actuator; the design, fabrication, numerical simulations, and experimental investigations of a polymeric microgripper designed using the cascaded V-shaped electrothermal actuators; a review of the development of ionic polymer actuator with introduction of two kinds of typical polymer actuators - ionic polymer-metal composites and bucky gel actuator - with their basic principle and fabrication process and typical applications and a methodology of designing and testing wideband actuators and energy harvesters, treated as one mechanical resonator, with a discussion on shock harvester, resonant harvester and energy transmission system, are presented. The second section has a chapter dedicated to modeling, system identification and control of electromagnetic actuators with main focus on the actuators used in magnetic levitation, in fuel injection systems and in variable valve timing. The third section presents a study focused on quantifying the decline in tactile sensation associated with diabetic neuropathy and developed a measurement device that used a thin-shaped memory alloy wire as the actuator. The fourth section includes a chapter presenting a two-level fault diagnosis and root-cause analysis scheme for a class of interconnected invertible dynamic systems, which aims at detecting and identifying actuator fault and causes.
