Não se pode ler Schwob sem estar preparado para entender o assombro que permeia seus contos. Para este escritor de vida breve (1867-1905), o paradoxo é a própria essência da vida, em cujo desenrolar o destino humano encontra seu fim na autoaniquilação produzida pela alucinação de uma ideia, de um desejo, de um sonho. Para Schwob, que foi estudioso das culturas greco-romana e medieval, a literatura se confunde com a natureza dos homens incapazes de deter um pensamento, uma obsessão, que podem ser tanto o desejo de encarnar um deus, ou a danação de sucumbir a uma paixão incontrolável. Em cada conto, consegue com uma maestria peculiar de umas poucas frases criar o personagem que irá seguir seu destino de crueldade ou santidade, de fanatismo ou de profecia. Talvez porque as dicotomias que compõem a razão humana se assemelhem em algum momento. Não sabem onde começa o sonho e onde termina a realidade. O destino quase sempre é infame, mas ele traz uma revelação que o personagem não consegue duvidar. Esta característica dual está na raiz dos contos de Schwob. Ele foi um dos predecessores de Borges, e não por acaso o argentino prefaciou a edição espanhola de seu livro A Cruzada dos Meninos. Neste conto, o resgate efetuado por Schwob vai muito além da mera perplexidade: faz parte daqueles momentos em que a humanidade parece tomada por uma histeria coletiva: "o fato é que durante 2 séculos a paixão de resgatar o santo sepulcro dominou as nações do Ocidente, não sem maravilha, talvez, de sua própria razão... No princípio do século XIII, partiram da Alemanha e da França duas expedições (cruzadas) de meninos. Acreditavam poder atravessar de pé enxuto os mares. Não os autorizavam e protegiam as palavras do Evangelho deixai vir a mim os pequeninos e não os impedis (Lucas, 18:16) ?; não havia declarado o Senhor que basta a fé para mover uma montanha (Mateus 17:20)?", pergunta Borges. A coluna de meninos peregrinos foi engrossando por todos os vilarejos por onde passava. A adesão de outros meninos à causa era tão esmagadora que as estradas se encheram de pequenos peregrinos. A coluna se dividiu, uma indo em direção à Marselha e outra à Gênova. Fora mandada aos mares para aliviar a pressão das cidades tomadas de meninos. O destino desses garotos é contado magistralmente por Schwob usando a voz de diversos narradores. E a missão, naturalmente, termina na mesma perplexidade com que havia começado.
