Mort Cinder written by Alberto Breccia and has been published by Fantagraphics Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-01 with Comics & Graphic Novels categories.

Alberto Breccia is recognized as one of the greatest international cartoonists in the history of comics and Mort Cinder is considered one of his finest achievements. Created in collaboration with the Argentine writer Héctor Germán Oesterheld, best known in the U.S. for his politically incendiary sci-fi masterpiece, the Eisner Award-winning The Eternaut, Mort Cinder is a horror story with political overtones. This episodic serial, written and drawn between 1962–1964, is drawn by Breccia in moody chiaroscuro. The artist’s rubbery, expressionistic faces capture every glint in the eyes of the grave robbers, sailors, and slaves that populate these stories; while the slash of stripes of prisoners’ uniforms, the trapeziums of Babylon, and more create distinct and evocative milieus.

Marilene Felinto is one of a new wave of young Brazilian writers, and her work is among the very best. Born in 1957 in the northeast of Brazil, she moved to São Paulo in early adolescence and completed her university education there. Her fiction connects the striking contrasts of a young woman's experience and the cross-purposes of modern Brazil. In The Women of Tijucopapo nothing can be taken for granted since everything might be taken away. Risia is a heroine little interested in being heroic All she wants is for her life "to have a happy ending." To find it she must go back to Tijucopapo, where her mother was born. One moonlit night her grandmother gave away a baby, and that baby was Risia's mother. Sharing the trauma of her mother's miserable marriage, Risia recollects and invents tales of Tijucopapo in the happier days before she was born. When she was a little girl she clung to the idea that she would kill her father for the way he treated women. Now; a woman herself, Risia hasn't lost the urge to kill. The time is ripe for it—war is in the air. Amid the disruptions of discovery and revolution, Risia walks toward Tijucopapo. Step by step she goes farther through the forest, closer to Tijucopapo, to find the beautiful side of her shamelessness, to leave behind her losses.

An essential reference for all game designers, this 1938 classic is “a fascinating account of ‘man the player’ and the contribution of play to civilization” (Harper’s). In this classic evaluation of play that has become a “must-read” for those in game design, Dutch philosopher Johan Huizinga defines play as the central activity in flourishing societies. Like civilization, play requires structure and participants willing to create within limits. Starting with Plato, Huizinga traces the contribution of Homo Ludens, or “man the player” through Medieval Times, the Renaissance, and into our modern civilization. Huizinga defines play against a rich theoretical background, using cross-cultural examples from the humanities, business, and politics. Homo Ludens defines play for generations to come.

The Murmuring Coast written by Lídia Jorge and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Literary Criticism categories.

This captivating tale is told in two parts. The first presents Lidia Jorge's version of a traditional story about a series of supposed incidents set in Beira, Mozambique. The events take place in the final years of Portugal's colonial African wars as an undisclosed narrator describes the military wedding of a young Portuguese ensign and an equally young bride. The wedding is followed by the mass poisoning of hundreds of native Africans and the arrival of a rain of locusts. The story ends grimly with the groom's suicide. Evita Lopo, the unnamed bride from the first part, narrates the remainder of the story. Twenty years have gone by and she reviews the past and questions the unidentified narrator's rendering of events in the first section. Evita's reminiscences destroy the credibility of the earlier story, and she supplies the reader with a great deal of information that the author of the previous account had suppressed or to which he or she merely alluded. It becomes apparent that betrayal and guilt have motivated all of the characters' actions.

History And Truth written by Paul Ricœur and has been published by Northwestern University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1965 with History categories.

Incredible originality of thought in areas as vast as phenomenology, religion, hermeneutics, psychoanalysis, intersubjectivity, language, Marxism, and structuralism has made Paul Ricoeur one of the philosophical giants of the twentieth century. The way in which Ricoeur approaches these themes makes his works relevant to the reader today: he writes with honesty and depth of insight into the core of a problem, and his ability to mark for future thought the very path of philosophical inquiry is nearly unmatched. In History and Truth, Ricoeur investigates the antinomy between history and truth, or between historicity and meaning. He argues that history has meaning insofar as it approaches universality and system but no meaning insofar as this universality violates the singularity of individuals' lives. Imposing unity upon truth, or unifying the diversity of knowledge and opinion, creates a singular and universal history but destroys historicity and subjectivity. Allowing for singularities in history promotes a multiplicity of truths over a single, unique truth and thereby annihilates system. This volume and the other new editions of Ricoeur's texts published by Northwestern University Press have joined the canon of contemporary continental philosophy and continue to contribute to emergent discussions in the twenty-first century.
