Este livro discute as contribuições das análises de Sérgio Buarque de Holanda (1902-1982) como pensador do Brasil. O foco é o conceito de homem cordial, espécie de síntese de caráter brasileiro. O homem cordial não é benevolente nem pacífico, como o próprio nome sugere, ele só é capaz de agir através do coração, expressa-se pela emoção, em detrimento da razão. Assim sendo, o homem cordial é incapaz de seguir os códigos necessários para o estabelecimento de uma conduta objetiva e impessoal. Segundo Sérgio Buarque, o comportamento do homem cordial impede que no Brasil haja uma definição clara entre as esferas pública e privada. O Estado brasileiro, muitas vezes, torna-se extensão dos interesses dos poderosos, que o conduzem de maneira a satisfazer os caprichos de suas famílias estendidas. Aqueles que não são reconhecidos como partes dessa família são abandonados ou perseguidos. Sérgio Buarque afirma que é preciso abandonar essa conduta cordial, para que a democracia chegue plena ao Brasil. O Estado deve ser impessoal e coletivo, não deve submeter-se aos caprichos de poucos, deve ser inclusivo. Raízes do Homem Cordial é uma busca em profundidade de traços definidores de nossa cordialidade. Do patriarcalismo herdado do colonizador português e da sua cultura da personalidade – oposta às relações impessoais próprias do europeu – derivam o acentuado "particularismo" solipsista (o "individualismo") e a privatização dos indivíduos (o fechamento em seu mundo privado). Trata-se, portanto, de uma situação de heteronomia, de submissão à lei do outro, ao contrário da autonomia que é a abertura para o outro, para o mundo, para a instituição de uma sociedade na qual os indivíduos obedecem à sua própria lei, na medida em que esta seja uma criação coletiva consciente. Em Raízes do Brasil faz-se uma reflexão política de singular atualidade, revelando o caráter e a ética de nosso homem cordial. O colonizador cedeu docilmente aos valores culturais de nossos indígenas e de nossos negros, mas deixou em nós algumas marcas: autoritarismo, conservantismo, negação da política, espírito anárquico e falta de coesão social. Deixou também outros traços: paternalismo condescendente, hospitalidade, generosidade, delicadeza no trato e docilidade dengosa.
