Es un grave error seguir pensando que las dictaduras surgen cuando aumenta la corrupcion en los paises democraticos, porque al hacerlo indirectamente enviamos dos mensajes negativos, incorrectos y peligrosos: "Las democracias son corruptas" y "La solucion inevitable es la dictadura." Las estadisticas demuestran que en las dictaduras existe tanta o mayor corrupcion e injusticias que en las democracias, solo que la represion de la prensa y de las personas bajo los sistemas autoritarios impiden con mas eficacia que se conozcan los "escandalos de palacio." Si, contrariamente a lo que muchos creen, no fuesen la corrupcion ni las desigualdades sociales las principales responsables del surgimiento de las dictaduras, cuales serian las verdaderas causas? The Contra War and the Iran-Contra affair that shook the Reagan presidency were center stage on the U.S. political scene for nearly a decade. According to most observers, the main Contra army, or the Fuerza Democrática Nicaragüense (FDN), was a mercenary force hired by the CIA to oppose the Sandinista socialist revolution. The Real Contra War demonstrates that in reality the vast majority of the FDN’s combatants were peasants who had the full support of a mass popular movement consisting of the tough, independent inhabitants of Nicaragua’s central highlands. The movement was merely the most recent instance of this peasantry’s one-thousand-year history of resistance to those they saw as would-be conquerors. The real Contra War struck root in 1979, even before the Sandinistas took power and, during the next two years, grew swiftly as a reaction both to revolutionary expropriations of small farms and to the physical abuse of all who resisted. Only in 1982 did an offer of American arms persuade these highlanders to forge an alliance with former Guardia anti-Sandinista exiles--those the outside world called Contras. Relying on original documents, interviews with veterans, and other primary sources, Brown contradicts conventional wisdom about the Contras, debunking most of what has been written about the movement’s leaders, origins, aims, and foreign support.

Juan Montalvo es uno de los más grandes pensadores de América Latina. Vivió en el siglo XIX, durante un período de inestabilidad política y restricciones de las libertades públicas. Pasó la vida defendiendo la libertad de prensa y combatiendo las tiranías y el clericalismo. Se enfrentó sin descanso contra los gobiernos autoritarios y sufrió por ello persecuciones que lo mantuvieron exilado de su patria, el Ecuador, por largas temporadas. Buena parte de la producción de Montalvo tiene como finalidad defender los valores del libre pensamiento y el derecho a la libertad de conciencia. En 1874, apareció un artículo en el periódico panameño Star and Herald, donde se ensalzaban los logros de Gabriel García Moreno como presidente y se apoyaba su candidatura a la tercera reelección. Montalvo se indignó y escribió la misiva que aquí publicamos al diario, bajo el titulo de La dictadura perpetua. En ella su prosa mordaz y directa ponía en relieve las perversiones del gobierno de García Moreno. Este texto, subtitulado, canto a la libertad y a la lucha contra la tiranía, se leyó clandestinamente en Ecuador y contribuyó a quitar la venda de los ojos de nuestros antepasados, no llegó a Ecuador hasta mayo de 1875. La dictadura perpetua es un retrato del poder ejercido en sus extremos. Construido, a través del análisis del carácter y la psicología de un dictador. El libro inspiró a un grupo de jóvenes liberales a ejecutar a Gabriel García Moreno, entonces presidente del Ecuador, el 6 de agosto de 1875. Muchas de las ideas que aparecen en La dictadura perpetua siguen teniendo total vigencia en el presente: «¿A dónde van a parar los principios democráticos, a dónde las instituciones liberales, a dónde los derechos de los pueblos, a dónde la justicia, a dónde el pundonor, a dónde la dignidad humana, a dónde la libertad, a dónde la esperanza?» «¡Desdichado, por otra parte, el pueblo donde la revolución viniese a ser imposible!»

The July 1936 coup d'tat against the Spanish Second Republic brought together a diversity of anti-Republican political and social groups under the leadership of rebel Africanista military officers. In the ensuing Civil War this coalition gradually came under the rule of Generalissimo Franco. This volume explores the hypothesis that the violence and combat experiences of the war were the fundamental ideological crucible for the Francoist regime. The rebels were a group of reactionary and anti-liberal forces with little ideological or political coherence, but they emerged from the conflict not only victorious but ideologically united under the dictator's power. Key to understanding this transition are the different political cultures of the rebel army, how the combatants' war experiences contributed to the transformation of diverse rebel groups, and the role of foreign armed intervention. The contributors examine not only the endogenous Spanish political and military cultures of the Francoist coalition, but also the transnational influence of foreign groups. The roots of Francoist political culture are found in the Falangist and Carlist militias, and Civil Guard units, that lent their support to the military rebellion. The war experiences of conscripts, colonial troops, and junior officers forged the Francoist ideology. It was reinforced by fascist influences and assistance from Germany and Italy, and the lesser-known contributions of Swiss and White Russian volunteers. At the beginning of the conflict the rebel side was not homogeneous. But it weaved together a complex, transnational web of political and military interests in the midst of a bloody and destructive war, transforming itself in the process to a political and dictatorial platform that was to rule Spain for many years.
