Living Standards Measurement Study No. 108. Nigeria, which has experienced high fertility and rapid population growth over the past 30 years, has launched efforts to stem its population growth through contraceptive use. In this study, individual women are linked to the characteristics of the nearest pharmacy, health facility, and source of family planning to assess the importance of the socioeconomic background and the characteristics of nearby services for women's contraceptive use and fertility. The results suggest that limited levels of female schooling are constraining contraceptive use, particularly in rural areas. Policies to raise female schooling will raise contraceptive use and lower fertility. Broader availability of the pill through pharmacy outlets and of the injection and IUD in fixed health facilities is also likely to raise contraceptive use. Consultation fees at health facilities do not appear to be constraining demand for modern methods.

Living Standards Measurement Study Working Paper No. 111. This study looks at the socioeconomic background of individual women and draws a correlation between them and the characteristics of their nearest source of family planning. The study assesses the importance of the socioeconomic background and the availability, price, and quality of services on contraceptive use and fertility. In 1969, Ghana was among the first Sub-Saharan African countries to adopt a population policy. Today, the average distance to a source of family planning is still about three miles. Population and fertility growth rates are high, and contraceptive use is low. The results suggest that raising levels of female schooling will also raise contraceptive use and lower female fertility, particularly in rural areas. However, the distances between facilities and related service centers remain a binding constraint on contraceptive use among those in the sample. The study also found no consistent effect on the demand for contraception or on fertility when measuring the quality of services.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Sociology - Gender Studies, grade: A, Ebonyi State University (Faculty Of Education), course: Education And Social Studies, language: English, abstract: The main purpose of this study is to assess the attitude of Ebonyi State University Social Studies undergraduates towards the use of family planning devices. The specific purposes are to determine the attitude of towards the use of condoms as a device, to determine the attitude towards the use of withdrawal method as a device, to ascertain the attitude towards the use of oral contraceptive pills. Nearly half of all pregnancies in Nigeria are unintended, the highest of this instance occurs between 18-24 years of age. Four in ten of all unintended pregnancies are terminated by abortion. Sexually active adolescents aged 10-24 years of age are at the highest risk for contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and while young adults aged 15-24 years represent only 25 % of the sexually active experienced population, they acquire nearly half of all new STDs. The high occurrence of unintended pregnancies and STD contraction can be prevented through contraceptive use. With contraceptives becoming increasingly easier to access, costing less, and expanding in variety or options, the question remains as to why such incidences of pregnancies and STDs are so high among the young adult age group. The CDC STD Surveillance report stated that STDs are hidden epidemics of enormous health and economic consequence in Nigeria. They are hidden because many Nigerians are reluctant to address sexual health issues in an open way and because of the biologic and social characteristics of these diseases. STDs are public health problems that lack easy solutions because they are rooted in human behavior and fundamental societal problems. Solutions to these societal issues can only begin through knowledge and discussion to explore how the adolescent population’s attitudes regarding contraceptives are affecting their use. Family planning issues are important to university aged undergraduates. Education is associated with sexual behaviours, childbearing and contraceptives use and studies show that women are more likely to postpone pregnancy. Therefore, education can be described as a dynamic activity which involves an orderly, deliberate and sustained effort to develop knowledge and skills. Formal education is a process by which the human mind develops through learning at school in stages from pre-primary through primary, secondary to tertiary (university) institution. The present socio-economic situation in Nigeria has made it obvious that the women must be given sound.

Changes in kinship support and spousal relations should affect attitudes toward the value of family planning. Increases in contraceptive use will likely be uneven, since there is a variety of cultural and socioeconomic factors across Africa. Obstacles to increased contraceptive use include AIDS, political and social unrest, and deteriorating education.
