E, neste cenário, abre-se todo espaço para que Huxley, a partir das relações entre as personagens, teça como que um grande ensaio sobre os valores morais e éticos, a ciência, a religião, a arte. Cada um desses elementos é personificado por uma ou mais personagens, e como numa sinfonia, é possível ir discernindo cada uma das pequenas melodias que a compõem. É dessa maneira que Contraponto torna-se um delicioso, ainda que melancólico, retrato de nossa época – sim, ainda de nossa época. Melancólico porque há a guerra, a hipocrisia, a mesquinharia e o onipresente dinheiro regendo tudo. Mas delicioso porque a figura da mulher, exemplarmente pintada em Lucy, surge inteligente, independente e emancipada. E o grotesco da sociedade marca o tempo da sinfonia e, se é triste, não deixa de ser um primor da criação de Huxley.
