Ce volume, qui s’attache aux différentes figures de l’antiplatonisme à l’époque moderne et contemporaine, s’organise selon trois perspectives. La première est celle du renversement ou du dépassement de la métaphysique spéculative voulus tant par Kant et Nietzsche que par Heidegger et Wittgenstein. Est exposé ensuite le procès politique intenté à Platon lors de la Première Guerre mondiale par Popper, Russell et Crossman, avec comme chef d’accusation un totalitarisme supposé, atténué parfois en anti-libéralisme. Il en résulte un certain malaise dans l’interprétation, les commentateurs se trouvant pris entre le désir de présenter un Platon plus traitable et qui partagerait finalement les présupposés de ses adversaires, et celui de restituer à sa pensée toute sa force de provocation.

« Même si elle tient à la fois de la poésie et du sermon, la République est avant tout un livre de philosophie. » Et Nettleship, un de ses plus grands interprètes, énonçait en conséquence ce principe de lecture : il faut voir comment Platon arrive à ses conclusions avant de commencer à les critiquer. Pour les critiques, elles n’ont jamais manqué, que ce soit envers la nature utopique ou totalitaire qu’on reconnaît à l’œuvre, ou à l’égard de thèses métaphysiques ou politiques jugées exorbitantes, tel ce mystérieux « bien par delà l’essence » ou celle du gouvernement des philosophes. Ce second volume a pour objet les principes dégagés par les livres centraux, fondements nécessaires des conséquences psychologiques et politiques tirées dans les autres livres. La définition du philosophe authenthique, seul apte à saisir le Bien par la science qui lui est propre, permet de constituer en paroles une cité ayant pour modèle l’Idée même de justice et de définir comme une conversion totale de l’âme l’éducation de ceux qui sont destinés à la garder et à la gouverner. Enfin, si c’est dans la République que la plus haute science, la dialectique, se trouve déterminée par le fait de n’avoir pas recours à des images, l’œuvre abonde en comparaisons, allégories, analogies et mythes en tous genres. Nouer ainsi la science au mythe, c’est sans doute aussi réfléchir à une des manières dont la philosophie doit pénétrer la politique.

A l’évidence, en s’opposant au platonisme, d’emblée le problème se complique, car il n’est pas certain après tout que Platon, si obstinément absent de ses propres dialogues, si délibérément anonyme, ait été platonicien. Comment s’opposer à qui ne parle jamais en son nom, pourquoi réfuter une doctrine que son auteur n’a jamais présentée comme telle ni revendiquée comme sienne et dont le sens semble pouvoir être librement élaboré par les adversaires du moment et pour les besoins de leur cause ? En quoi le platonisme autorise-t-il ces attaques globales et parfois étrangement violentes ? Peut-être est-ce parce que chaque époque croit y déceler ce qu’elle tient pour la forme extrême de la démesure et de l’orgueil philosophiques, indiquant du même coup les problèmes et les attitudes jugés par elle tolérables en philosophie.

Based on a conception of Reading Order introduced and developed in his Plato the Teacher: The Crisis of the Republic (Lexington; 2012) and The Guardians in Action: Plato the Teacher and the Post-Republic Dialogues from Timaeus to Theaetetus (Lexington; 2016), William H. F. Altman now completes his study of Plato’s so-called “late dialogues” by showing that they include those that depict the trial and death of Socrates. According to Altman, it is not Order of Composition but Reading Order that makes Euthyphro, Apology of Socrates, Crito, and Phaedo “late dialogues,” and he shows why Plato’s decision to interpolate the notoriously “late” Sophist and Statesman between Euthyphro and Apology deserves more respect from interpreters. Altman explains this interpolation—and another, that places Laws between Crito and Phaedo—as part of an ongoing test Plato has created for his readers that puts “the Guardians on Trial.” If we don’t recognize that Socrates himself is the missing Philosopher that the Eleatic Stranger never actually describes—and also the antithesis of the Athenian Stranger, who leaves Athens in order to create laws for Crete—we pronounce ourselves too sophisticated to be Plato’s Guardians, and unworthy of the Socratic inheritance.
