Twenty years have passed since a group of young linguists whose work deals with the study of Slavic languages founded "Polyslav" at the University of Konstanz (Germany). Ever since, the Polyslav meetings have been held at a Central or Eastern European university. From 6-8 September 2016, the 20th Annual International Academic Conference of the Polyslav Association (Polyslav XX) was held in Moscow (Russia). This jubilee conference was co-organized by the Moscow State Pedagogical University and the Institute for Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Polyslav XX was attended by 37 participants from eight countries - most of them from Russia and Poland, but also from the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Serbia, and Ukraine. The present proceedings contain 20 papers in four Slavic languages (Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, and Slovene), two in English, and one in German. All 23 contributions meet the basic publishing standards and international editorial conventions, including a double-blind review. In total, 29 reviewers from Europe and the USA guarantee the academic level of the published papers.

In September of 2018, from the 10th to the 12th, the members of the Polyslav Association of Slavists gathered for the 22nd annual International Academic Conference of the Polyslav Association. The conference was held at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Lódz, Poland. Polyslav-XXII was attended by over 70 participants from research centres established in ten countries. 0The present proceedings contain 31 papers in six Slavic languages (Polish, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Russian, and Ukrainian), eight in English, and two in German. All 41 contributions ? devoted to a vast variety of topics, including, for instance, the use of gestures in teaching pronunciation in Polish as a foreign language, the language policy of Ukrainian television, the declension of new vocabulary in the Slovenian language, and the Slavonic root ?-gnev-? in Russian, Czech, and Sorbian ? meet basic publishing standards and international editorial conventions, including a double-blind peer review. A total of 75 reviewers ? 69 from Europe and 6 from the USA ? guarantee a high scientific level for the published papers.

The temporary employment of Yugoslav citizens in Western countries was one of the most important migration phenomena in socialist Yugoslavia. In the early 1970s, one in every four Yugoslavs employed outside of agriculture and craft work was a Gastarbeiter. Yet, while the study of the Yugoslav Gastarbeiter emigration has received much scholarly attention, the overall numbers and dynamics of Gastarbeiter return migration have remained under-researched. This book offers a major contribution to fill this gap. It draws on fresh political documents from the archives, the press, statistical data, contemporary sociological research, audio-visual materials, novels, and oral history interviews. It shows that the impact of the Gastarbeiter return migration on development policies, social change, and narratives of identity was much more extensive than what has been recognised so far. In particular, analysing changes in migration patterns and policies in the period 1965-1991, this book argues that the return and reintegration of Gastarbeiter generated political divisions and social tensions on a much larger scale than had their employment abroad. It maintains that, during the crisis period of the 1980s, the increase of return migration put strains on the domestic labour market, contributing to the crisis of the federal system, and the 'ethnicisation' of migration policies.

Multiword expressions (MWEs) are a challenge for both the natural language applications and the linguistic theory because they often defy the application of the machinery developed for free combinations where the default is that the meaning of an utterance can be predicted from its structure. There is a rich body of primarily descriptive work on MWEs for many European languages but comparative work is little. The volume brings together MWE experts to explore the benefits of a multilingual perspective on MWEs. The ten contributions in this volume look at MWEs in Bulgarian, English, French, German, Maori, Modern Greek, Romanian, Serbian, and Spanish. Avant-Garde and Criticism sheds new light on the complex aims, functions, practices and contexts of art-criticism in relation to the European avant-garde. Although many avant-garde works and the avant-gardes of various countries have been analyzed, considerably less attention has been given to the reviews in newspapers and journals on avant-garde literature, art, architecture and film. This volume of Avant-Garde Critical Studies will look at how art critics operated in a strategic way. The strategies of avant-garde criticism are diverse. Art critics, especially when they are artists themselves, attempt to manipulate the cultural climate in their favour. They use their position to legitimize avant-garde concepts and to conquer a place in the cultural field. But they are also markedly influenced by the context in which they operate. The position of fellow-critics and the ideological bias of the papers in which they publish can be as important as the political climate in which their criticism flourishes. The analysis of avant-garde art criticism can also make clear how strategies sometimes fail and involuntarily display non-avant-garde characteristics. On the other hand traditionalist criticism on the avant-garde offers new insights into its status and reception in a given time and place. This volume is of interest for scholars, teachers and students who are interested in the avant-garde of the interbellum-period and work in the field of literature, art, film and architecture.
