«Frugare nella vita sessuale degli angeli con collarino e abito talare fa sicuramente notizia, non solo sulla stampa scandalistica. La Chiesa cattolica preferirebbe sottacere il problema, ma la realtà è che migliaia di preti nel mondo hanno rinunciato al loro ufficio per via del celibato obbligatorio. Si possono indicare soprattutto tre ragioni per cui oggi appare necessario discuterne: affrontare il problema degli scandali degli abusi sessuali, arginare la dilagante carenza di preti e attenuare la crisi strutturale e di sistema della Chiesa cattolica». La regola del celibato, che impone ai sacerdoti cattolici l’astensione dal matrimonio, viene ancora oggi propugnata come pilastro della Chiesa, nonostante gli scandali e le polemiche, sempre più frequenti, legati alle accuse di abusi sessuali commessi da preti. Hubert Wolf – teologo e storico della Chiesa, uno dei massimi esperti di Archivi vaticani – mostra come le origini del celibato non siano affatto così remote e come oggi i preti sposati siano già una realtà. L’autore analizza i diversi argomenti a giustificazione del celibato, strutturati in 16 limpide tesi, e individua ragionevoli motivi a favore della sua abolizione definitiva. L’esposizione lineare, che attraversa in profondità la storia della Chiesa, ha l’effetto di un monito forte, di un incoraggiamento a procedere sulla via dell’abolizione di questo istituto, che dovrebbe trovare ascolto anche in Vaticano, soprattutto in vista del Sinodo dei vescovi che si terrà a ottobre 2019, dedicato all’Amazzonia e alle questioni spinose della drammatica crisi vocazionale. Non ci sono abbastanza preti, in particolare in un territorio così vasto come quello sudamericano, per cui si rende problematica la stessa celebrazione dell’eucaristia, quello sì pilastro irrinunciabile della Chiesa cattolica. Il celibato dei preti, nato in origine dal culto della purezza sacerdotale, ha salvaguardato la Chiesa da pretese ereditarie di figli legittimi e ne ha tracciato successivamente la linea di demarcazione rispetto ai protestanti. Ancora negli anni di Giovanni Paolo II il celibato, mediante il riferimento a Gesù, ha subìto una trasfigurazione in senso spirituale. Il numero crescente dei casi di abuso venuti alla luce dovrebbe tuttavia indurre a chiedersi se il celibato sacerdotale giovi davvero al futuro della Chiesa. Hubert Wolf si pone questa domanda per il bene della stessa Chiesa e mette il controverso istituto di fronte al rigoroso banco di prova della storia. Ci spiega come si giunse al celibato, come mai le argomentazioni passate non attraggano più e quali buone ragioni oggi vi si oppongano: le deroghe al celibato hanno dato buoni risultati, la carenza di preti potrebbe essere superata e il pericolo di abusi arginato. In un punto Wolf dà tuttavia ragione ai fautori del celibato: in forza della sua abolizione il sistema clericale, con la sua scarsa considerazione dei «laici» e delle donne, dovrebbe essere rivisto nella sua globalità. E questo sarebbe indubbiamente un bene.

Prefazione di Gianni Gennari Nella sua introduzione Gianni Gennari, giornalista ed ex sacerdote, ricorda i tempi in cui chi si dimetteva dal sacro ministero era chiamato volgarmente «spretato». Ora la discussione sul celibato torna a irrompere nella Chiesa, con la possibile apertura del sacerdozio ai viri probati, uomini sposati di provata fede. Se scelto in modo spontaneo e volontario, il celibato è un vasodilatatore dell’anima, consente di allargare il cuore e sentire tutti come il proprio “prossimo”. Se però si riduce a mera obbedienza, diviene una menomazione esistenziale e le conseguenze sono nefaste per sé e per l’intera comunità cristiana. Allora, anche per i cattolici di rito latino il celibato dovrebbe tornare a essere una libera scelta e non più un obbligo? Il libro offre una sintesi storica del celibato e riporta le posizioni dei papi dell’ultimo secolo. Parlano gli esperti, dal religioso-psicologo specialista nella cura dei disagi di persone consacrate alla teologa che insegna ai futuri candidati all’episcopato. Soprattutto si dà voce ai protagonisti: presbiteri fedeli al voto di castità e diaconi sposati, preti che hanno lasciato il ministero per amore di una donna e mogli di ex sacerdoti. Storie vere, cariche di dolore ma anche di gioia, raccontate in modo delicato ma con schiettezza. «Il celibato è un’estrema forma di povertà, che mette chi lo pratica in unione con i più soli, i rifiutati» dice un anziano sacerdote ripensando alla propria vita. Tra le varie testimoniane, quella del vescovo presidente della commissione CEI per il clero e la vita consacrata: «Chi si prepara al sacerdozio – afferma – deve educare lo sguardo e abituarsi al confronto con l’altro sesso».

The present study addresses problems of an epistemological nature which hinge on the question of how to define Jewish thought. It will take its start in an ancient question, that of the relationship between Jewish culture, Greek philosophy, and then Greco-Roman (and Christian) thought in connection with the query into the history and genealogy of wisdom and knowledge. Our journey into the history of the denomination ‘Jewish philosophy’ will include a leg that will lead us to certain declarations of political, moral, and scientific principles, and then on to the birth of what is called philosophia perennis or, in Christian circles, prisca theologia. Our subject of inquiry will thus be the birth of the concept of Jewish philosophy, Jewish theology and Jewish philosophy of religion. A special emphasis will fall on the topic treated in the last part of this study: Jewish scepticism, a theme that involves a philosophical attitude founded on dialectical "enquiry", as the etymology of the Greek word skepsis properly means.

Cominciai a seguire l'insegnamento del Buddha dal momento in cui capii che il vero e proprio non è una religione - una fede in una Divinità e in una relazione con Essa, comunque articolata -, ma un umanesimo e, più concretamente, un sistema etico-psicologico che propone metodi pratici per raggiungere, qui e ora, la piena realizzazione delle proprie potenzialità benefiche. In Occidente, l'insegnamento del Buddha è stato più volte 'interpretato' in senso più o meno teistico: il Buddha come Dio o come sua rappresentazione/manifestazione. Ma quando mi resi conto che il Buddha (il Risvegliato) non pretendeva essere un Dio o un profeta, bensì esempio supremo di ciò che l'essere umano può diventare, mi dissi: “Questo sì che ha un senso: il Risvegliato insegna agli altri, come risvegliarsi". Questo testo vuole contribuire alla comprensione della natura pratica e concreta dell'insegnamento del Buddha, il cui cuore è l'esercizio meditativo. Vi sono delineate le sue caratteristiche essenziali, per offrire al lettore non specializzato un'introduzione generale, che possa incoraggiare a farne esperienza. “Nel 1972 in Sri Lanka (...) ebbi la fortuna di leggere le parole del Buddha: la spiegazione di quello che lui stesso aveva sperimentato, e di come anche altri possano arrivare alla stessa esperienza. E così scoprii la straordinaria semplicità e la profonda concretezza del sentiero di quiete e visione profonda, da lui indicato. Mi dedicai, quindi, allo studio dell'antica lingua pali e dei testi. Nel 1974 feci un corso di meditazione Vipassana con il maestro indo-birmano S.N. Goenka; questa pratica dell'insegnamento del Buddha mi convinse ad accettare la sua validità , come guida di vita, e ad impegnarmi da allora al continuativo esercizio meditativo di Vipassana. Ben sapendo che è una strada lunga, a ogni passo mi appare giusta e benefica."

In 1638, a small book of no more than 92 pages in octavo was published “appresso Gioanne Calleoni” under the title “Discourse on the State of the Jews and in particular those dwelling in the illustrious city of Venice.” It was dedicated to the Doge of Venice and his counsellors, who are labelled “lovers of Truth.” The author of the book was a certain Simone (Simḥa) Luzzatto, a native of Venice, where he lived and died, serving as rabbi for over fifty years during the course of the seventeenth century. Luzzatto’s political thesis is simple and, at the same time, temerarious, if not revolutionary: Venice can put an end to its political decline, he argues, by offering the Jews a monopoly on overseas commercial activity. This plan is highly recommendable because the Jews are “wellsuited for trade,” much more so than others (such as “foreigners,” for example). The rabbi opens his argument by recalling that trade and usury are the only occupations permitted to Jews. Within the confines of their historical situation, the Venetian Jews became particularly skilled at trade with partners from the Eastern Mediterranean countries. Luzzatto’s argument is that this talent could be put at the service of the Venetian government in order to maintain – or, more accurately, recover – its political importance as an intermediary between East and West. He was the first to define the role of the Jews on the basis of their economic and social functions, disregarding the classic categorisation of Judaism’s alleged privileged religious status in world history. Nonetheless, going beyond the socio-economic arguments of the book, it is essential to point out Luzzatto’s resort to sceptical strategies in order to plead in defence of the Venetian Jews. It is precisely his philosophical and political scepticism that makes Luzzatto’s texts so unique. This edition aims to grant access to his works and thought to English-speaking readers and scholars. By approaching his texts from this point of view, the editors hope to open a new path in research into Jewish culture and philosophy that will enable other scholars to develop new directions and new perspectives, stressing the interpenetration between Jews and the surrounding Christian and secular cultures.
