Utility grid companies are currently facing many challenges. These challenges include energy management, efficiency, and power quality issues. It is well known that improving power systems' management, control, and quality results in better economic benefits, increased electronic device lifetime, and reduced power interruptions, leading to the satisfaction of utility and consumer. Many research efforts were done in the past decades focusing on power systems control, quality, and management. The need for more green energy resources has inspired these researchers to find ways to integrate renewable energy resources into the grid. The current grid is facing issues due to a number of reasons such as increased Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) types and number, increased loads' types and number, and the increased distance between the DERs, loads, and the grid. The study of this thesis aims at finding creative energy management and control solutions through observing and understanding the characteristics of the utility grid and implement these solutions in a simulation software called MATLAB/Simulink. Consensus-based control will be implemented in a hybrid generation microgrid which will support the grid and work on restoring voltage and frequency levels with optimum power sharing between the DER.

This project presents a decentralized control methodology for energy management in a microgrid. The study of control algorithms of both power generation and demand management is expanded to allow for agents to be removed and reconnected without destabilizing the system. The approach applies the consensus algorithm to optimize power generation and load control for cost. This paper improves on existing research by adding shedding controls to the load agents and reconfiguring the control algorithm during a load shedding event. Microgrid operation is improved to remove economically burdensome loads while maintain stability. The proposed control methodology is simulated on an IEEE-14 Bus and is demonstrated to successfully optimize all agents for the lowest common cost. The agents maintain the common cost during load shedding and reconnecting events while the microgrid remains operational.

Distributed generation is becoming more important in electrical power systems due to the decentralization of energy production. Within this new paradigm, new approaches for the operation and planning of distributed power generation are yet to be explored. This book deals with distributed energy resources, such as renewable-based distributed generators and energy storage units, among others, considering their operation, scheduling, and planning. Moreover, other interesting aspects such as demand response, electric vehicles, aggregators, and microgrid are also analyzed. All these aspects constitute a new paradigm that is explored in this Special Issue.

This book presents new techniques and methods for distributed control and optimization of networked microgrids. Distributed consensus issues under network-based and event-triggered mechanisms are first addressed in a multi-agent system framework, which can explicitly characterize the relationship between communication resources and the control performance. Then, considering the effects of network uncertainties, multi-agent system-based distributed schemes are tailored to solve the fundamental issues of networked microgrids such as distributed frequency regulation, voltage regulation, active power sharing/load sharing, and energy management. The monograph will contribute to stimulating extensive interest of researchers in electrical and control fields.

This book brings together emerging objectives and paradigms in the control of both AC and DC microgrids; further, it facilitates the integration of renewable-energy and distribution systems through localization of generation, storage and consumption. The control objectives in a microgrid are addressed through the hierarchical control structure. After providing a comprehensive survey on the state of the art in microgrid control, the book goes on to address the most recent control schemes for both AC and DC microgrids, which are based on the distributed cooperative control of multi-agent systems. The cooperative control structure discussed distributes the co-ordination and optimization tasks across all distributed generators. This does away with the need for a central controller, and the control system will not collapse in response to the outage of a single unit. This avoids adverse effects on system flexibility and configurability, as well as the reliability concerns in connection with single points of failure that arise in traditional, centralized microgrid control schemes. Rigorous proofs develop each control methodology covered in the book, and simulation examples are provided to justify all of the proposed algorithms. Given its extensive yet self-contained content, the book offers a comprehensive source of information for graduate students, academic researchers, and practicing engineers working in the field of microgrid control and optimization.

This paper presents a distributed cooperative control-based power management algorithm for a hybrid AC/DC microgrid. The proposed algorithm for a hybrid microgrid system controls the power flow through the interface converter between the AC and DC microgrids. This algorithm allows power sharing between the distributed generators in the microgrid according to their power ratings. Moreover, it enables the fixed scheduled power delivery through the interface converters in both directions at different operating conditions while maintaining voltage regulation and improving the frequency profile. The effectiveness of the controller is confirmed by simulation.

Electrical power systems are complex networks that include a set of electrical components that allow distributing the electricity generated in the conventional and renewable power plants to distribution systems so it can be received by final consumers (businesses and homes). In practice, power system management requires solving different design, operation, and control problems. Bearing in mind that computers are used to solve these complex optimization problems, this book includes some recent contributions to this field that cover a large variety of problems. More specifically, the book includes contributions about topics such as controllers for the frequency response of microgrids, post-contingency overflow analysis, line overloads after line and generation contingences, power quality disturbances, earthing system touch voltages, security-constrained optimal power flow, voltage regulation planning, intermittent generation in power systems, location of partial discharge source in gas-insulated switchgear, electric vehicle charging stations, optimal power flow with photovoltaic generation, hydroelectric plant location selection, cold-thermal-electric integrated energy systems, high-efficiency resonant devices for microwave power generation, security-constrained unit commitment, and economic dispatch problems.

This paper proposes a distributed control method based on a consensus algorithm for distributed energy resources (DERs) using blockchain as a secure communication medium for cyber resilience. Each DER communicates with a local blockchain server that is maintained by the distributed ledger technology to allow for securely sharing local measurements among neighboring assets to achieve the global control objectives, i.e., voltage and frequency regulation as well as accurate power sharing among the DERs, including collective grid-forming capability. To prove that the distributed control can retain system stability under a blockchain-induced variable communication delay, Lyapunov function-based stability analysis is carried out. This paper demonstrates the concept on an 11-bus test case developed in MATLAB Simulink, which has been modified from the IEEE 9-bus test case, to study dynamic operations of the five inverter-based DERs working with a blockchain-induced variable delay. The results validate the superior performance of the proposed control method, compared to heavily compromised operations of the other test cases without the security measure, affected by heavy communication delays and communication interruptions.

This book introduces several novel contributions into the current literature. Firstly, given that microgrid topologies are paramount in theoretical analysis, the author has proposed a rigorous method of computing the network’s admittance matrix and developed to facilitate the stability analysis of DC microgrids supplying nonlinear loads. This unique approach enabled the factorisation of the admittance matrix in a particular way that facilitates a rigorous theoretical analysis for deriving the stability conditions. Secondly, author has proposed a unified control structure at the primary control layer that maintains the widely accepted droop-based approaches and additionally ensures crucial current- and voltage-limiting properties, thus offering an inherent protection to distributed energy resources. He has formalised the control design proofs using Lyapunov methods and nonlinear ultimate boundedness theory, for both parallel and meshed microgrid configurations. Moreover, he has developed a distributed secondary controller using a diffusive coupling communication network, on top of the primary control, to achieve voltage restoration and improve the power sharing. In this way, the author has formulated the complete hierarchical control scheme. In this high-order nonlinear setting, he has analytically proven closed-loop system stability of the overall system, for the first time, using two-time scale approaches and singular perturbation theory, by formulating rigorous theorems that introduce straightforward conditions that guide the system and control design and demonstrate system stability at the desired equilibrium point. In addition, the author has provided a straightforward algorithm for simple testing of system stability and explored from a graphical perspective by giving an interpretation to the effect of the nonlinear load onto the system performance and stability.
