Catholic Europe, 1592-1648 examines the processes of Catholic renewal from a unique perspective; rather than concentrating on the much studied heartlands of Catholic Europe, it focuses primarily on a series of societies on the European periphery and examines how Catholicism adapted to very different conditions in areas such as Ireland, Britain, the Netherlands, East-Central Europe, and the Balkans. In certain of these societies, such as Austria and Bohemia, the Catholic Reformation advanced alongside very rigorous processes of state coercion. In other Habsburg territories, most notably Royal Hungary, and in Poland, Catholic monarchs were forced to deploy less confrontational methods, which nevertheless enjoyed significant measures of success. On the Western fringe of the continent, Catholic renewal recorded its greatest advances in Ireland but even in the Netherlands it maintained a significant body of adherents, despite considerable state hostility. In the Balkans, O hAnnrachain examines the manner in which the papacy invested substantially more resources and diplomatic efforts in pursuing military strategies against the Ottoman Empire than in supporting missionary and educational activity. The chronological focus of the book is also unusual because on the peripheries of Europe the timing of Catholic reform occurred differently. Catholic Europe, 1592-1648 begins with the pontificate of Clement VIII and, rather than treating religious renewal in the later sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as essentially a continuation of established patterns of reform, it argues for the need to understand the contingency of this process and its constant adaptation to contemporary events and preoccupations.

V knjigi devetnajst avtorjev iz štirih držav (Italije, Slovenije, Hrvaške in Avstrije) predstavlja zgodovinske, epigrafske in arheološke dokaze o prisotnosti rimske vojske in o sledovih spopadov na območju Caput Adriae ter na vzhodni obali Jadrana. Večina prispevkov je posvečena severnemu Jadranu in njegovemu zaledju v 2. in 1. stoletju pr. Kr. Topografija prvega leta histrske vojne (178–177 pr. Kr.) je analizirana s pomočjo zgodovinskih virov. Arheološki dokazi o zgodnji rimski vojaški prisotnosti so obravnavani v več poglavjih: o vojaških taborih Koromačnik in Mala Gročanica, o začetkih Tergesta na hribu Sv. Justa, o spopadih z avtohtonim prebivalstvom in o epigrafskih sledeh rimske vojske. Ostanki zgodnjerimskih taborov ponujajo nov vpogled tudi v pokrajino srednje Dalmacije. Rimska ofenzivna politika na južnem Jadranu, ob Jonskem morju in v notranjosti Balkana je analizirana na podlagi pisnih virov.

Der neue Band enthält die Korrespondenz aus der wechselvollen Kriegszeit zwischen September 1631 und Mai 1633 mit dem Siegeszug der Schweden nach Süddeutschland, der erneuten Berufung Wallensteins und dem Tod des schwedischen Königs. In den Beziehungen zwischen Kaiser und Papst ist es eine Zeit schwerer Spannungen. Wunschziel der päpstlichen Diplomatie ist die Schaffung eines Bündnisses katholischer Länder, das französischen Ansprüchen soweit entgegenkommt, dass es sich von seinen protestantischen Bündnispartnern trennt ‐ eine Vorstellung, die man auf kaiserlicher Seite nicht realistisch finden kann, während die von Frankreich finanziell unterstützte schwedische Armee die fränkischen Bistümer und Bayern erobert und über den Rhein vordringt, ohne dass der Papst sich zur Gewährung großzügiger Subsidien veranlasst sieht. Der spanische Protest gegen diese Form päpstlicher Neutralität vertieft die Mißstimmung zu einer ernsten Krise. Auch die Entsendung außerordentlicher Nuntien nach Wien, Paris und Madrid zur Anbahnung freundlicherer Beziehungen führt nicht zu diplomatischen Fortschritten; es bildet sich jedoch die zukunftsweisende Überzeugung aus, dass eine neue Friedensordnung nicht in direkten Verhandlungen der europäischen Mächte, sondern auf einem allgemeinen Kongress von Friedensbevollmächtigten gesucht werden müsse.
