Un sacrificio che avrebbe richiesto una narrazione corale ma che ha registrato invece nel corso del tempo un fitto intreccio di polemiche e liti giudiziarie iniziate dopo gli avvenimenti e proseguite fino ad oggi. Ma chi svolse e decise l’azione partigiana? Come si schierò il Cln? La rappresaglia fu inevitabile? Perché nessun partigiano si consegnò? Pio XII ne fu informato? Perché non intervenne? In Recent Italian Cinema, two fundamental questions are asked: the first concerns whether Italian cinema, as national cinema, is in reality reduced to a niche market in its own territory. The second relates to what Italian audiences do with domestic films.For nearly two decades, most Italian films have been produced outside box office returns, through a practice of subsidy and co-financing between many institutional and private entities. Thus Italian cinema has had to define its mode of production and use-value of films in a different way. It is clear that it is no longer possible to separate national cinemas from the grip that the American film industry has on world markets, in terms of imagination and modes of production, distribution and exhibition. It is thus only by examining the multiple layers of description and analysis, which take into account the presence of Hollywood, that we can come to an understanding of what recent Italian cinema actually is.

In 1945, disguised in German greatcoat and helmet, Mussolini attempted to escape from the advancing Allied armies. Unfortunately for him, the convoy of which he was part was stopped by partisans and his features, made so familiar by Fascist propaganda, gave him away. Within 24 hours he was executed by his captors, joining those he sent early to their graves as an outcome of his tyranny, at least one million people. He was one of the tyrant-killers who so scarred interwar Europe, but we cannot properly understand him or his regime by any simple equation with Hitler or Stalin. La lotta per l’indipendenza dell’Indonesia, che toccò il suo culmine negli anni quaranta del secolo scorso, è stata considerata per molto tempo come un conflitto lontano e marginale, tra Paesi Bassi colonizzatori e Indie colonizzate. E invece ha scritto la nostra storia. Dopo la Seconda guerra mondiale e l’occupazione giapponese, l’Indonesia fu il primo Paese a rivendicare con le armi la propria indipendenza; l’intervento prima inglese, poi australiano e, soprattutto, olandese, che avrebbe dovuto riportare l’ordine, non fece che scatenare la prima guerra di decolonizzazione moderna. Quella lotta ispirò i movimenti per l’indipendenza in Asia, Africa e nel mondo arabo, specialmente dopo la “leggendaria” Conferenza di Bandung, organizzata dall’Indonesia libera: “Era il 18 aprile 1955. Mentre in Europa si svolgevano le ultime mostre etnografiche, con anonimi corpi scuri e finte capanne, qui una nuova generazione di capi politici sicuri di sé entrava nella luce del mattino”. La narrazione parte da lontano, dalla preistoria dell’Indonesia, quando l’Homo erectus arrivò dall’Africa a “Giava, che non era ancora un’isola ma, insieme a Sumatra, al Borneo e Bali, era tutt’uno con il resto dell’Asia”, descrivendo il susseguirsi delle epoche, delle culture e degli scambi che resero l’arcipelago un “crocevia di civiltà” e mostrando che anche qui, come in Africa, le lancette della Storia non iniziano a muoversi con l’arrivo degli europei. Van Reybrouck ha lavorato per cinque anni a questa grande opera, intervistando quasi duecento persone, gli ultimi testimoni di quegli avvenimenti ancora in vita, nelle case di riposo indonesiane, nelle metropoli giapponesi e nelle isole più sperdute. Il racconto del Dopoguerra è tutto diverso rispetto a quello a cui siamo abituati.
