Hematological disorders in children and adolescents pose a wide range of management challenges and treatment dilemmas. In this book an internationally acclaimed panel of authors, each chosen for expertise in their field, have produced a state-of-the-art collection of review articles focusing on the very latest advances and controversies in the management of pediatric and adolescent hematological problems. The whole range of benign and malignant, congenital and acquired, acute and chronic conditions is discussed in detail. Individual chapters cover hematologic problems on the pediatric intensive care unit, treatments for iron deficiency and ITP; advances in stem cell transplantation, gene therapy, novel pharmaceutics and molecular diagnostics, as well as transition from child to adult are also explored. Providing an up-to-date look at both specific hematologic disorders in the pediatric and adolescent population and also hematologic problems that arise in association with systemic disease, this book is essential reading not only for pediatric and adult hematologists but also for pediatricians, pediatric or hematologic specialist nurse practitioners and pediatric pharmacologists.

Practical Algorithms In Pediatric Hematology And Oncology written by Richard H. Sills and has been published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Medical categories.

This is the only comprehensive collection of algorithms which exclusively addresses hematologic and oncologic problems affecting neonates, children and adolescents. Examining clinical problems which challenge the pediatrician, general practitioner and family practice physician, each algorithm utilizes a concise, step-by-step approach based upon clues from the history, physical examination and laboratory studies. The algorithms addressing differential diagnosis clearly distinguish between the most common etiologies, those that are less frequent, and finally some that are rare but important to recognize. The 51 topics include evaluation of anemia, sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, hemolytic anemia, the bleeding child, thrombocytopenia and other platelet disorders, hemophilia, leukocyte disorders, leukemias, lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, approaches to mass lesions in the mediastinum, abdomen, pelvis, bones and soft tissues as well as approaches to potential emergencies such as tumor lysis and superior vena cava syndromes. The oncology topics emphasize diagnostic approach and management of complications, and not the details of chemotherapy. All algorithms are presented with a page of explanatory notes and a list of selected reading. Pediatricians, family physicians and general practitioners will find this book very helpful in managing problems in their practices. Trainees in pediatric hematology will find it a useful tool in developing approaches to solve the problems they will encounter, and pediatric hematologists/oncologists will find it useful as a teaching tool.

Despite the fact that the prevalence of obesity in early childhood has been stable and is no longer increasing in many developed and industrialized countries, the incidence of both obesity and full-blown metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents is still very high. Obesity is a major disease burden in all societies and needs to be prevented early in life. New approaches are eagerly sought and absolutely necessary. This book presents a comprehensive and state-of-the-art summary of current and new knowledge in this critical field. Crucial issues such as nutrition and genetics are described in detail. In addition, new ideas such as e-health and the consequences of urban living conditions are explored. Last but not least, modern treatment concepts and prevention even at an early age are competently discussed. Offering a valuable update on new developments in obesity research and the treatment in children and adolescents, this book is essential reading for all pediatricians and health-care professionals who look after young patients on a regular basis.

Neonatal Pharmacology And Nutrition Update written by F.B. Mimouni and has been published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-17 with Medical categories.

In order to provide safe and effective drug therapy to neonates, it is necessary to know about and understand the impact their development has on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs. The fact that children are different and neonates very different from adults means that, in neonates, it would be unwise to dose medications by scaling down adult doses proportionately, simply attempting to match their smaller weight and/or body surface area. When one makes decisions about neonatal drug therapy, one must not only take into consideration the available data but also critically assess and interpret this information within the context of fetal development and maturational processes as well as within the context of diseases that might affect a drug’s biodisposition. This book includes the latest information on the regulation and scientific basis of drug development and also provides a rationale for formula development for preterm infants. It offers guidance on how to translate pharmacokinetic data into dosing recommendations and also covers legal and regulatory issues relating to neonatal pharmacotherapy.

Progressive Neuroblastoma written by H. Christiansen and has been published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-28 with Medical categories.

Neuroblastoma is a tumor derived from the sympathetic nervous system. It is the most common extracranial solid tumor occurring in children and exhibits a marked variability in outcome when the disease is categorized by clinical (e.g. age or stage) and biologic characteristics. This book gives an introduction into the clinical features of progressive neuroblastoma and focuses on molecular-targeted therapies and immunotherapies of this disease. It has become increasingly clear that MYCN (v-myc avian myelocytomatosis viral oncogene neuroblastoma derived homolog) holds a key position in neuroblastic transformation and gene expression in normal and transformed cells. In the 14 chapters important topics such as genomic alterations in neuroblastoma and strategies for indirect molecular targeting of MYCN are discussed. Two chapters, for example, review apoptotic pathways and proapoptotic molecular targets in neuroblastoma, one focusing on the p53 pathway and the extrinsic and intrinsic pathways of apoptosis. Other chapters cover topics related to immunology in neuroblastoma, such as immune regulation in neuroblastoma, immunotherapy related to passive and active vaccination approaches and additional immunotherapy in the treatment of progressive disease. This volume will be essential reading for all clinicians and basic researchers who are involved in delivering health care to patients with progressive neuroblastoma.

Childhood Cancer written by Adolf E. Christ and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

The past decade has brought extraordinary gains in the outlook for children stricken with cancer. Though cancer remains a leading cause of death for children and young adults, more victims of child hood cancer today will survive than will die. The therapeutic advances and the optimism they instill have prompted researchers and clinicians to analyze the impact of cancer upon young patients and their famil, ies and to devise more effective intervention strategies. Hope and survival, juxtaposed with the continuing high mortality associated with certain forms of the illness, add new challenges to management of the psychosocial aspects of cancer. To respond to these challenges we need research as rigorous as that which continues to make inroads in treating the physical illness. This specific concern for the needs of children suffering from cancer and their families has paralleled an increasing sensitivity on the part of the medical community and the public at large to the limitations of specialized, high technology health care practices.
