Interpretation has recently become a more focused topic in the cultural heritage conservation field, due to the increasing concern about the involvement of the stakeholders and the social pillar of sustainability. As the enhancement of participation of the stakeholders in the conservation processes can be achieved by increasing their awareness and appreciation of cultural heritage sites, interpretation has a considerable role in this process. This research aims to search for methods for developing interpretation approaches for cultural heritage sites through the assessment of the responses of the stakeholders. The churches of the Walled City of Famagusta have been chosen as the case study for this research, due to the apparent interpretation problems. Assessment of the responses of the stakeholders is accepted as a tool for developing a better interpretation of the cultural heritage buildings, preventing them from further neglect or possible extinction. This research proposes the advancement of interpretive approaches for similar undervalued and underappreciated sites. There are many abandoned heritage buildings worldwide and due to the lack of function and maintenance, deteriorate easily and are ruined. Similarly, abandoned valuable religious buildings have faced vandalism deliberately because of the decreasing demand for use or lack of their communities, and many of them have been insufficiently interpreted for their visitors. This research aims to develop an interpretive plan for the churches in the Walled City of Famagusta to overcome their current problems. I would like to acknowledge that this book is the result of several pieces of research such as the published papers presented at international conferences from September 2014 until September 2024 and especially derived from my Ph.D. dissertation entitled “Interpretation Problems and Proposals for the Churches in the Walled City of Famagusta” under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr. Ege Uluca Tümer at the Architecture Department, Architecture Faculty of Eastern Mediterranean University, Famagusta, Northern Cyprus defended in July 2023.

It navigates through the urban transformations in historic sites like Thamugadi and Tripoli, the digitization for conservation in Algeria, and the sustainable urban futures informed by indigenous knowledge systems. Furthermore, it examines public space dynamics, urban green infrastructure, and the integration of sustainable development into urban planning, with case studies spanning from Turkey to Tehran. The book also addresses contemporary architectural discourse, mobility in architecture, and the significance of unacknowledged tributaries in urban planning. Through a rich tapestry of empirical research, case studies, and theoretical analysis, this book is an essential resource for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers dedicated to the advancement of cultural heritage and sustainable urban development.

The prevalent global heritage discourse has been primarily Euro-centric in its origin, premise, and praxis. Diverse cultural, historical, and geographical contexts, such as that of Asia, call for more context-specific approaches to heritage management. This book explores this complexity of managing the cultural heritage in Asia. Case studies include sites of Angkor, Himeji Castle, Kathmandu Valley, Luang Prabang, Lumbini, and Malacca, and the book uses these to explore the religious worldviews, heritage policies, intangible heritage dimensions, traditional preservation practices, cultural tourism, and the notion of cultural landscape that are crucial in understanding the cultural heritage in Asia. It critiques the contemporary regulatory frameworks in operation and focuses on the issues of global impact on the local cultures in the region. The book goes on to emphasize the need for integrated heritage management approaches that encompass the plurality of heritage conservation concerns in Asian countries. Themes are discussed from the vantage point of heritage scholars and practitioners in the South, Southeast, and East Asia. This book thus presents a distinctive Asian perspective which is a valuable source for students and practitioners of heritage within and beyond the Asian context.

Border Urbanism presents a global array of authors’ research that tackles the perception, interpretation, and nature of borders from a transdisciplinary perspective. The authors examine ways in which borders attempt to define socially, economically, politically, and historically incompatible systems, from micro neighbourhoods to global macro territories, and how this blurs urban order that results in an absence of cohesion. Their analysis of contextual worldwide settings considers the unique issues and the broad scope of forces that shape borders and separate socioeconomic, political, cultural, and historical polarities. The authors consider ways in which the resulting urban border conditions determine the mobility of goods, resources, and people and how these delineations define relationships that influence geopolitical relationships, socioeconomic transactions, and people’s lives at multiple levels. They address the temporal issues defined by a variety of unique urban conditions that result from these lateral thresholds. Each chapter contributes to a critical discourse of the subject of border urbanism and the phenomenon created by separation, demarcation, and segregation as well as by conflict and coexistence. The transdisciplinary approach of Border Urbanism ensures that it will be of interest to individuals across a spectrum of professions and disciplines. Professionals such as urban planners, designers, architects, developers, and civil and environmental engineers and students of these disciplines will be particularly interested as will allied professionals and those not traditionally associated with urbanism; these include artists, sociologists, historians, lawyers, politicians, and civic and government leaders. The authors’ global perspectives, combined with their expertise in environmental, historical, cultural, social, political, and geographic areas, will appeal to anyone interested in border urbanism and its intersection with these areas.

Architecture And Fire written by Stamatis Zografos and has been published by UCL Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-12 with Architecture categories.

Architecture and Fire develops a conceptual reassessment of architectural conservation through the study of the intimate relationship between architecture and fire. Stamatis Zografos expands on the general agreement among many theorists that the primitive hut was erected around fire – locating fire as the first memory of architecture, at the very beginning of architectural evolution. Following the introduction, Zografos analyses the archive and the renewed interest in the study of archives through the psychoanalysis of Jacques Derrida. He moves on to explore the ambivalent nature of fire, employing the conflicting philosophies of Gaston Bachelard and Henri Bergson to do so, before discussing architectural conservation and the relationship between listed buildings, the function of archives, and the preservation of memories from the past. The following chapter investigates how architecture evolves by absorbing and accommodating fire, while the penultimate chapter examines the critical moment of architectural evolution: the destruction of buildings by fire, with a focus on the tragic disaster at London’s Grenfell Tower in 2017. Zografos concludes with thoughts on Freud’s drive theory. He argues the practice of architectural conservation is an expression of the life drive and a simultaneous repression of the death drive, which suggests controlled destruction should be an integral part of the conservation agenda. Architecture and Fire is founded in new interdisciplinary research navigating across the boundaries of architecture, conservation, archival theory, classical mythology, evolutionary theory, thermodynamics, philosophy and psychoanalysis. It will be of interest to readers working in and around these disciplines.
