After the execution of Socrates in 399 BC, a number of his followers wrote dialogues featuring him as the protagonist and, in so doing, transformed the great philosopher into a legendary figure. Xenophon's portrait is the only one other than Plato's to survive, and while it offers a very personal interpretation of Socratic thought, it also reveals much about the man and his philosophical views. In 'Socrates' Defence' Xenophon defends his mentor against charges of arrogance made at his trial, while the 'Memoirs of Socrates' also starts with an impassioned plea for the rehabilitation of a wronged reputation. Along with 'The Estate-Manager', a practical economic treatise, and 'The Dinner-Party', a sparkling exploration of love, Xenophon's dialogues offer fascinating insights into the Socratic world and into the intellectual atmosphere and daily life of ancient Greece.

Rich in drama and humour, they include the controversial Ion, a debate on poetic inspiration; Laches, in which Socrates seeks to define bravery; and Euthydemus, which considers the relationship between philosophy and politics. Together, these dialogues provide a definitive portrait of the real Socrates and raise issues still keenly debated by philosophers, forming an incisive overview of Plato's philosophy.

Missing Socrates written by Jay Farness and has been published by Penn State Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-04-08 with Literary Criticism categories.

Plato's conversations of Socrates are among the most accessible philosophical texts most of us have ever read, yet the more one pursues the art or intelligibility of this writing, the more mysterious and paradoxical the Platonic texts become. What does it mean to study Plato, not philosophically as a maker of arguments, not poetically as a maker of dialogues, but literally as a maker of texts? This is a question that Jacques Derrida has made his own, and in this book Farness creates a dialogue with Derrida on Plato's texts. Missing Socrates also provides a dialogue between Plato and Socrates on the question of speech versus writing and a study of the materiality of Plato's writing. Included among the various dialogues and themes developed here are rhetoric and courtroom practice in the Apology of Socrates; religion, skepticism, and the idea of transcendence in the Euthyphro; artistic practice and tradition in the Ion; education and political discipline in the Charmides; and rhetoric, writing, commemoration, and the motives of authorship in Phaedrus. In each of these discursive settings, Socrates unsuccessfully seeks a place or a mode for philosophy; Farness shows that the dialogues of Plato uncannily supply that lack.

"The Memorable Thoughts of Socrates" is a collection of Socratic dialogues written by the ancient Greek philosopher Xenophon. The book is also known by its Greek title "Απομνημονεύματα" (Apomnemoneumata), which translates to "Memorabilia" or "Memoirs." Xenophon, a contemporary of Socrates, wrote "Memorable Thoughts" as a tribute to his teacher and mentor. The work is presented in the form of dialogues, much like those of Plato, another disciple of Socrates. In "The Memorable Thoughts of Socrates," Xenophon presents a series of conversations and encounters between Socrates and various interlocutors, including friends, acquaintances, and adversaries. Through these dialogues, Xenophon seeks to portray Socrates' character, teachings, and philosophical method. The dialogues cover a wide range of topics, including ethics, politics, religion, and the nature of knowledge. Socrates engages his interlocutors in probing questions and dialectical arguments, challenging them to think critically and examine their beliefs. One of the central themes of "Memorable Thoughts" is the pursuit of virtue and wisdom. Socrates emphasizes the importance of self-knowledge, moral integrity, and the cultivation of virtue as the path to a fulfilling life. Unlike Plato's dialogues, which often feature abstract and speculative philosophical discussions, Xenophon's portrayal of Socrates tends to be more practical and down-to-earth. Socrates offers practical advice on how to live a good life, navigate social relationships, and fulfill one's duties as a citizen. Overall, "The Memorable Thoughts of Socrates" provides readers with valuable insights into the life and teachings of one of history's most influential philosophers. Xenophon's work offers a unique perspective on Socrates' philosophy and its relevance to the challenges of everyday life.

Plato And The Socratic Dialogue written by Charles H. Kahn and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-01-09 with Philosophy categories.

This book offers a new interpretation of Plato's early and middle dialogues as the expression of a unified philosophical vision. Whereas the traditional view sees the dialogues as marking successive stages in Plato's philosophical development, we may more legitimately read them as reflecting an artistic plan for the gradual, indirect and partial exposition of Platonic philosophy. The magnificent literary achievement of the dialogues can be fully appreciated only from the viewpoint of a unitarian reading of the philosophical content.
