Excerpt from Conversations With Walt Whitman On one of these expeditions I entered a little store which hitherto had escaped my invasions. It looked as it'it had never been swept, the dust lay a quarter of an inch thick on the shelves. The proprietor, dusty like his books, with a rich layer of dandruff on his back and shoulders, his coat and shirt front spotted with tokens of his meals, was sitting on a box, a cigar clenched in his mouth, and reading very intensely. He was a man of middle age, with quite a fierce interesting physiognomy, and as I soon found out, different to the ordinary book: sellers - also his stock -was more select - being the author of several excellent poems. I soon became a regular frequenter of this place, where amongst others I made the acquaintance of an old, well to do Quaker - dressed in old fashioned drab suit, clerical neckwear, and broad brim, exactly as the Friends had walked about Independence Hall a hundred years before - Who played an important part in my drama of life, as he launched me into a more intellectual society than hitherto had been my deplorable fate to associate with. Excerpt from Walt Whitman: Yesterday Today In columns of bantering comment, after parodying his style of all-inclusiveness, the United States Review (i 8 5 5) characterizes Walt Whitman thus: No skulker or tea-drinking poet is Walt Whitman. He will bring poems to fill the days and nights - fit for men andwomen with the attributes of throbbing blood and flesh. The body, he teaches, is beautiful. Sex is also beauti ful. Are you to be put down, he seems to ask, to that shallow level of literature and conversation that stops a man's recognizing the delicious pleasure of his sex, or a woman hers? Nature he proclaims inherently clean. Sex will not be put aside; it is the great ordination of the universe. He works the muscle of the male and the teeming fibre of the female throughout his writings, as wholesome realities, impure only by deliberate inten tion and effort. To men and women, he says, you can have healthy and powerful breeds of children on no less terms than these of mine. Follow me, and there shall be taller and richer crops of humanity on the earth. From Studies among the Leaves, printed in the Crayon (new York, this extract may be taken With a wonderful vigor of thought and intensity of perception, a power, indeed, not often found, Leaves of Grass has no identity, no concentration, no purpose it is barbarous, undisciplined, like the poetry of a half civilized people, and as a whole useless, save to those miners of thought who prefer the metal in its unworked state. Sadakichi Hartmann was born on the artificial island of Dejima, Nagasaki, to a Japanese mother, who died soon after childbirth, and a German father. He was raised in Germany and came to Philadelphia in 1882. Two years after arriving, at the age of seventeen, he paid his first visit to Walt Whitman, now sixty-five years old, who was living modestly just across the Delaware River, in Camden. Fascinated by the poet’s life and work, Sadakichi would visit Whitman several times over the course of six years, to talk about literature and to question the poet about contemporary authors and books. Sadakichi went on to publish Whitman’s opinions first in the New York Herald, in 1880, arousing the indignation of many and making him unpopular with the admirers of the poet, and later, in 1885, in Conversations with Walt Whitman.

Excerpt from Walt Whitman: The Man and the Poet If we ask what are the leading ideas which are particularly characteristic of Whitman's poetry or philosophy, we shall find that his disciples are not altogether in agreement about them. How ever, I think we shall find in the following passage from Mr. Sloane Kennedy's Reminiscences of Walt Whitman, a sufficient indication of what are usually accounted to be his root ideas. Excerpt from Walt Whitman's Anomaly The present writer - a medical man - changed one day to take up Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, and to open it at the Calamus poems. Almost immediately the strong similarity in sentiment to that of confessions of homosexual subjects recorded in text-books on the human sex-instinct became astonishingly evident; so evident, indeed, that it seemed fifty chances to one the thing must have been noticed before. However, for some time search proved negative. A psychopathical criticism was outside the compass of Whitman's contemporaries, because at that time scientific study of sex practically did not exist.
