Riley Fitzhugh is temporarily made officer in charge of the naval guard on board the SS Carlota, a merchant ship assigned to deliver bombs and aviation fuel to the Sebou River during Operation Torch. The Atlantic crossing was supposed to be in convoy, but Carlota breaks down after surviving a U-boat attack and is forced to limp along alone. At the mouth of the Sebou River, Riley rejoins the Nameless, an anti–U-boat vessel, which has come down from her refit in Scotland to join the Torch attack. When the Nameless is tasked with delivering a company of Army Rangers to capture the French air force base, she and her crew must force their way through the boom guarding the mouth of the river and pass through the gunfire from the French fort on the hills above. Along the way, Riley runs into an old flame or two—one an enemy agent, the other a war correspondent from Cuba.

The trip into the Sahara was more dangerous and life threatening than our other trips. However, it would not have been possible without our self- contained VW Camper. Seeing the unique wildlife in the Sahara was a strong incentive. Frequently the only road markers were barrels and most of them were covered with blown sand. We traveled in convoy with three German students in the required areas. They were a little wild and left us in their dust. We needed our compass to navigate. At one point the Germans went over a bank and lost all their battery fluid. At times, tracks went in every direction causing some confusion. There were frightening incidences,, but fortunately we survived. We hope you enjoy traveling with us. -Ted and Emma

From September through November 1942, the Allies defeated the Axis forces on all active fronts. On land, the British defeated Rommel in Operation SUPERCHARGE, the US Marines defeated the Japanese on Guadalcanal, and the Russians trapped the German Sixth Army at Stalingrad and disrupted the entire Axis southern front in Russia. At sea, the Royal Navy landed desperately needed supplies on Malta in Operations PEDESTAL and STONEAGE; the USN defended the US Marines on Guadalcanal from a Japanese attack in the Battle of Cape Esperance; the Allies landed troops at Morocco and Algeria in Operation TORCH; USN cruisers sank a Japanese battleship in the 1st Battle of Savo Island; the 2nd Battle of Savo Island was the only battleship-to-battleship engagement of the war in the Pacific; the Battle of the North Atlantic increased in intensity; and the Germans tried to capture the French Fleet at Toulon, France, in Operation ANTON, only to arrive as the ships sank beneath the sea.

The War For The Seas written by Evan Mawdsley and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-24 with History categories.

This “impeccable, myth-busting study” of WWII maritime operations sheds new light on the conflict with sharp analysis and an international perspective (The Sunday Times, UK). Command of the oceans was crucial to winning World War II. By the start of 1942 Nazi Germany had conquered mainland Europe, and Imperial Japan had overrun Southeast Asia and much of the Pacific. How could Britain and distant America prevail in what had become a "war of continents"? In this definitive account, Evan Mawdsley traces events at sea from the first U-boat operations in 1939 to the surrender of Japan. He argues that the Allied counterattack involved not just decisive sea battles, but a long struggle to control shipping arteries and move armies across the sea. Covering all the major actions in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, as well as those in the narrow seas, this book interweaves for the first time the endeavors of the maritime forces of the British Empire, the United States, Germany, and Japan, as well as those of France, Italy, and Russia.

The author of The First Day on the Somme details a naval skirmish that became a turning point for the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II. Winston Churchill wrote, “The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril.” Had the convoy link between North America and Britain been broken, the course of World War II would have been different. There was a period during the winter of 1942-43 when the Germans almost cut the North Atlantic lifeline. In the first twenty days of March, 1943, the Germans sank ninety-seven Allied merchant ships—twice the rate of replacement. During the same period, seven U-boats were lost and fourteen put in service. No wonder Churchill was worried. Early in March, 1943, Convoys SC122 and HX229 sailed from New York harbor for England, and Admiral Doenitz deployed forty-two U-boats to entrap them. Twenty-one merchant ships were sunk in the ensuing battle. The Germans called it “the greatest convoy battle of all time.” This book documents the convoys, every maneuver of the merchant ships, their escort vessels, the long-range aircraft cover, and the attacking U-boats in a powerful narrative reminiscent of Nicholas Monsarrat’s bestselling novel The Cruel Sea. In many ways, this book could be the story of any of the hundreds of convoys that sailed the ocean during the war. Middlebrook also elucidates three controversial aspects of the Battle of the Atlantic: why there was an “Air Gap” long after full air cover could have been provided, why the convoys had to sail with dangerously weak naval escorts, and how the Allied outwitted the Germans in the radio decoding war.

Convoy for Change is an autobiographical snapshot of a few months in 1993 during which the author spent his time fundraising, collecting donations of food and medical supplies and driving, each month, to deliver them as aid to the refugees in the former Yugoslavia.Join Dave and his friends, old and new, as they get drawn ever deeper into the growing crisis and find themselves motivated to stretch the boundaries and to take increasing personal risks in order to help people for whom they all feel a growing responsibility.Based upon recent European history, the story looks at the fragility of all societies and at the potential dangers of contemporary demands for regional self determination and autonomy. The reader is confronted, repeatedly, with the uncomfortable question: "Could this happen to me?"Heart stopping incidents and heart warming acts of kindness are expertly interwoven with the regular lives of our protagonists, creating the feeling of reading about personal friends rather than a historical novel.
