This book is about people whose ancestors lived in bondage and the ordeal and challenges facing them finding freedom in a world where others were still in bondage. It tells of the simple life challenges and the struggle of being accepted. It tells of those that were not resposible for the things that were done in the past but were willing to sacrifice everything to make the world they now live in better. It displays the simple beauty that life can hold and the courage to keep that beauty alive. It tells of how their leaders built a challenging world around them and proved to them they were equal to any man. This story contains hardships, challenges, humor and a zest for life as free as it possibly could be. The story takes place in the mid 1800s on a Louisiana cane Plantation. It tells of free people and the challenges they faced to hold that freedom as it was at a time and place in history that just wasnt ready for the change. Five young siblings—three sisters and two brothers—face death by exhaustion, starvation or epidemics in post-World War II Yugoslavia. As ethnic Germans living there, the family had been arrested and their property confiscated by the Communist government. This tale of courage and ingenuity brings into sharp focus a little-known episode in European history. It is told from Dora's vivid memory, supported in part by a tattered journal kept on their journey by her older sister, Irmgard. Dora's dedication to accuracy is reflected in every line. The five escape from their labor camps, and in the depth of winter cross three heavily-guarded borders. They trek from Yugoslavia into Romania, then Hungary, then Austria. Their only food and shelter are what they can find or are given along the way, and they spend many hungry nights in the freezing winds of open fields. They are caught and jailed several times, but escape or are released by sympathetic guards. The story reads like a novel, with plenty of suspense and sharp-eyed insight into character. There are scenes of spontaneous, open-handed generosity; there is bureaucratic heartlessness, and sheer meanness. At the beginning of their internment, as the family was being scattered into various labor camps, Dora's father—a Methodist pastor—blessed her: "Dora, my child, remember that knowing God is life's highest good. Perhaps the path you're now entering will be the one He'll meet you on. May God keep you safe, my child, and may He sustain you." More than once, when despair overwhelms the siblings, these words calm them and give them the courage to find yet another way to survive and persevere. Miraculously, they succeed. - Roger N. Pierce, Professor and Director of Theater, Stanford and UC Riverside, retired.

Winds and Wonders is the third book in the ‘White Gates Adventures’ series. Teenage Abby runs into trouble when she comes up against authoritarian forces in school, as well as in the churches she attends. Impatient Kakko still manages to save her millions of people, but goes through the worst pain she could imagine on the way. Shy Shaun makes a great impact on the football field, but how will it turn out in the game of life off the pitch? And parents Jack and Jalli, and even Nan Matilda, manage some excitement. Returning from her own adventure, Matilda declared: “Kakko, not all adventures involve exploding arms factories, broken limbs, getting yourself on TV and the like. I’ll leave the daring deeds to you. Being there for someone in need is very important – just listening may be all that is required... But, believe me, listening can be very tiring.” “If you say so, Nan,” said Kakko, unconvinced. The ‘White Gates Adventures’ series combines science fiction and fantasy with an appreciation for the beauty of creation – from the insect (Jalli is an entomologist), through the sweep of the rainbow, to the magnificence of a star-studded sky. The characters come to recognise and understand the loving presence of a Creator and Healer at every juncture, as the past, present and future interlace to talk of love and a hope that is beyond the dimensions of space-time. “Being young at heart, but also having had decades of experience as a minister, sucked into some of the most demanding (and horrific) things in life, I try and bring some faith experience into my ‘White Gates Adventures’. My young characters have fun, but they’re not immune to the pain and frustrations of teenage life. They go through the mill – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually – but they emerge with the hope of knowing that whatever happens, no matter how much it hurts, they are loved by the One who made and treasures them,” says author Trevor.

BOOK I: Tamsen Fairchild's wardship by the Sleeping God sect means he can never immerse himself in the music he loves except by sneaking off to the woods to imitate bird songs on his homemade whistle. When he is chosen to go with his Patriarch to visit a sect in the city of Savia, he runs off to explore. He is drawn by the most beautiful music he has ever heard coming from a tavern, where a man plays a strange instrument. Enthralled, Tam closes his eyes and tries to imitate the tones on his whistle. When the music stops, he looks up into the eyes of Jon the Minstrel, who insists that Tam has a Bardic Gift and must be trained at the Magika school. He asks a Windrider friend to fly Tam there on kirback. Tam's excitement is more than he can bear. Not only will he learn to produce the music in his heart, but he will fly there on a magical winged beast! His world is expanding beyond his wildest hope. Little does he realize how very large that world will be.
