Excerpt from Cooperative Economic Insect Report, Vol. 13: January 11, 1963 A vast low pressure system off the Maine coast, that was responsible for blizzard conditions in the Northeast during the close of the previous period, moved out slowly and kept cold Canadian air flowing across the Northeast the first 3 days of the period. Central and eastern Maine spent most of the week digging out of deep snow drifted 20 feet high in places. Temperatures rose all week in the Northeast, the greatest rise occurring in Maine where temperatures were above normal after January 2 and averaged 10° to 15° above normal for the week. From southern and western New England to Lower Michigan and southward to the Gulf of Mexico, temperatures for the week averaged below normal by 3° to as much as Freezing occurred on 4 to 5 days in northern and western Florida and on 2 or 3 days in low spots in central portions of the State the latter half of the week. Excerpt from Cooperative Economic Insect Report, Vol. 18: May 17, 1968 Missouri. Cooler-than-normal weather covered most of the Nation. Precipitation: A storm swinging out of the Rockies early in the week dumped snow in the Rockies and adjacent northern Great Plains. By Tuesday morning, 3 inches of snow accumulated at Sidney, Nebraska, 2 inches at Pine Ridge, South Dakota, and 1 inch at Casper, Wyoming. On Friday and Saturday, up to 5 or 6 inches of snow fell in spots in the Dakotas and parts of Minnesota. A storm front became quasi-stationary over Texas causing tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, heavy hail, strong gusty winds, and torrential rains. The violent weather persisted in Texas throughout the week and spread to neighboring States during the week. Heavy showers occurred almost every day in central and eastern Texas. Downpours of up to 13 inches in 12 hours sent south Texas rivers flooding. Six inches of rain fell at Papalote in 1 hour and almost 10 inches fell at Corsicana in 12 hours. Winnfield, Louisiana, received inches on Friday. Winds gusted to 86 m.p.h. At Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and exceeded 70 m.p.h. At Goodland, Kansas. Clouds of blowing dust reduced the visibility to near zero. Large hail fell in the San Angelo, Texas, area. Tornadoes and thunderstorms occurred over almost the entire State of Texas from the Panhandle to the coast. The heavy rains missed only the trans-pecos and the lower Rio Grande Valley. By Monday, May 13, the severe weather - tornadoes, thunderstorms, hail, strong winds, and heavy showers were still occurring over northern Texas, in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, and Arkansas. Heavy showers, mostly on Tuesday and Wednesday, left 2 to 8 - inch totals in southern Florida and weekend showers in central and northern Florida produced up to inch in some areas and more than inch in a few. The light to moderate rains improved soil moisture and benefited crops; the moderate to heavy rains delayed fieldwork; the torrential rains washed out growing crops and flooded fields and roads. The southwestern deserts were rainless and most of the intermountain areas received only light amounts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Cooperative Economic Insect Report, Vol. 16: March 25, 1966 Promising captures on sticky board traps Should be followed up by sweeping the pear blossoms with a sweep net. It would seem that about one trap per acre in selected pear orchards would be sufficient for an exploratory detection survey. The trap Should be exposed in the lower portion of the tree but high enough to be beyond the easy reach of children or animals. In Canada, Dr. G. G. Dustan, Canada Department of Agriculture, reports that adults were so scarce in Ontario in 1965 that only 3 were recovered. These were obtained by tapping limbs over a cotton Sheet. Survey for larvae in Canada was conducted by scouting in pear orchards for the characteristic hole in the Side or calyx end of the small fruits. Suspected fruits were cut and examined. About 20 minutes were Spent in each orchard. Judging from European literature, a good method for survey would be to cut and examine fruit which falls in the June drop. Attacked fruit, according to reports, falls at an early stage and a massive drop may be indicative of the presence of the pest. Attempts Should be made to rear the insect in order to obtain adults where they cannot be collected in adequate numbers. Timing of surveys: Timing of survey is highly important in detection of this ih sect. Adults are active for around 10 days only and larvae about 20 - 25 days. Adults appear when the pear blossoms begin opening; therefore, traps Should be placed in orchards just ahead of this time and kept in orchards until petal fall. Observations in 1965 on life histroy in Canada were as follows: First adult was collected on May 12 when pear blossoms were 75 percent open. First adult emerged from soil in insectary May 17. Newly hatched larvae and unhatched eggs were found May 19. No larvae could be found in the fruit after about June 15.
