In this thesis, several important aspects of cooperative wireless multiuser networks are investigated. The focus lies on coherent two-hop relaying networks where several amplify-and-forward (AF) relays assist the communication between multiple source-destination pairs. First, the impact of local oscillator (LO) imperfections and I/Q imbalance at the relays on two-hop relaying is investigated. A special focus lies on the comparison between frequency division duplexing (FDD) and time division duplexing (TDD) relays. Based on the observation that the direction in which a channel between two wireless nodes is measured has an impact on the estimate, phase synchronization requirements for coherent relaying networks are then found. Several channel estimation protocols that differ in the direction in which the single-hop channels are measured are furthermore identi'ed and their performance is compared. Next, a very simple phase synchronization scheme is presented that provides a set of relays with a common LO phase. Two coherent beamforming schemes, namely multiuser zero-forcing (MUZF) and multiuser minimum mean squared error (MMSE) relaying, are then investigated. Finally, a real-world demonstrator for distributed wireless communication networks (called RACooN Lab) is presented. It was used to implement coherent cooperative communication schemes on a practical two-hop relaying network.

Body-centric wireless sensor networks are expected to enable future technologies such as medical in-body micro robots or unobtrusive smart textiles. These technologies may advance personalized healthcare as they allow for tasks such as minimally invasive surgery, in-body diagnosis, and continuous activity recognition. However, the localization of individual sensor nodes within such networks or the determination of the entire network topology still pose challenges that need to be solved. This work provides both theoretic and simulative insights to enable the required sub-millimeter localization accuracy of such sensors using magneto-inductive networks. It identifies inherent localization issues such as the asymmetry of the position estimation in magneto-inductive networks and outlines how such issues may be addressed by using passive relays or cooperation. It further proposes a novel approach to recognize the entire structure of a magneto-inductive network using simple impedance measurements and clusters of passive tags. This approach is evaluated extensively by simulation and experiment to demonstrate the feasibility of low-cost human body posture recognition.

Utilizing magnetic induction for wireless communication, wireless powering, passive relaying, and localization could enable massive wireless sensor applications with tiny nodes in challenging media, foremost biomedical in-body sensor networks. This work investigates the performance limits of these unique wireless systems with hardly any assumptions. As a foundation, a general system model and an interface to communication theory are developed. A major part of this work identifies two crucial magneto-inductive fading channels: that between randomly oriented coils and that caused by a nearby swarm of resonant passive relay coils. The analysis yields important technological implications. Based thereon, an investigation of wirelessly-powered in-body sensors is conducted, revealing their active and passive data transmission capabilities. In the proposed scheduling scheme, we prove two key inequalities that capture the various tradeoffs inherent in the broad class of opportunistic relaying protocols, illustrating that no scheduling and routing algorithm can simultaneously yield lower delay and higher throughput. We then develop an adaptive rate transmission scheme with opportunistic scheduling, with the constraints of practical assumptions on channel state information (CSI) and limited feedback, which achieves an optimal system throughput scaling order. Along this work with the consideration of finite-buffer model, we propose a Buffer-Aware Adaptive (BAA) scheduler which considers both channel state and buffer conditions to make scheduling decisions, to reduce average packet delay, while maintaining the queue stability condition of the networks. The proposed algorithm is an improvement over existing algorithms with adaptability and bounded potential throughput reduction. In the third part, we extend the methods and analyses developed for wireless ad hoc networks to a practical Aeronautical Communication Networks (ACN) and present the system performance of such networks. We use our previously proposed scheduling schemes and analytical methods from the second part to investigate the issues about connectivity, throughput and delay in ACN, for both single-hop and two-hop communication models. We conclude that the two-hop model achieves greater throughput than the single-hop model for ACN. Both throughput and delay performances are characterized.

In our increasingly interconnected world, personalized and technology-assisted healthcare has become a rising trend. In an ageing society, technology enables new ways to care for and assist the elderly. Falls pose a major risk and cause of injuries for senior citizens. Technology-backed fall prevention thus has the potential to avoid severe injuries and further loss of independence, but requires continuous monitoring of the body posture in order to identify imminent falls. This work presents a system concept for a wearable wireless body area network (WBAN) for posture monitoring. It shows the principal feasibility of posture recognition from ultra-wideband (UWB) signals based on a large and diverse set of measurements. For a promising classifier-feature-combination, this work demonstrates how reliable posture recognition can be achieved with a limited number of body-mounted nodes, and analyzes its robustness towards potential pitfalls. It concludes with a proposal for a system implementation, and outlines its integration with existing and future aspects of personalized healthcare.

This dissertation builds a clear understanding of the role of information in wireless networks, and devises adaptive strategies to optimize the overall performance. The meaning of information ranges from channel/network states to the structure of the signal itself. Under the common thread of characterizing the role of information, this dissertation investigates opportunistic scheduling, relaying and multicast in wireless networks. To assess the role of channel state information, the problem of opportunistic distributed opportunistic scheduling (DOS) with incomplete information is considered for ad-hoc networks in which many links contend for the same channel using random access. The objective is to maximize the system throughput. In practice, link state information is noisy, and may result in throughput degradation. Therefore, refining the state information by additional probing can improve the throughput, but at the cost of further probing. Capitalizing on optimal stopping theory, the optimal scheduling policy is shown to be threshold-based and is characterized by either one or two thresholds, depending on network settings. To understand the benefits of side information in cooperative relaying scenarios, a basic model is explored for two-hop transmissions of two information flows which interfere with each other. While the first hop is a classical interference channel, the second hop can be treated as an interference channel with transmitter side information. Various cooperative relaying strategies are developed to enhance the achievable rate. In another context, a simple sensor network is considered, where a sensor node acts as a relay, and aids fusion center in detecting an event. Two relaying schemes are considered: analog relaying and digital relaying. Sufficient conditions are provided for the optimality of analog relaying over digital relaying in this network. To illustrate the role of information about the signal structure in joint source-channel coding, multicast of compressible signals over lossy channels is studied. The focus is on the network outage from the perspective of signal distortion across all receivers. Based on extreme value theory, the network outage is characterized in terms of key parameters. A new method using subblock network coding is devised, which prioritizes resource allocation based on the signal information structure.
