A Copa do Mundo FIFA de 2018 foi a vigésima primeira edição deste evento esportivo, um torneio internacional de futebol masculino organizado pela Federação Internacional de Futebol (FIFA), que ocorreu na Rússia, anfitriã da competição pela primeira vez. Com onze cidades-sede, o campeonato começou a ser disputado em 14 de junho e terminou em 15 de julho. A edição de 2018 foi a primeira realizada no Leste Europeu, a décima primeira realizada na Europa, depois de a Alemanha ter sediado o torneio pela última vez no continente em 2006, e a primeira vez que o torneio foi realizado em 2 continentes distintos (Europa e Ásia), uma vez que dos 12 estádios, 11 ficam na Rússia Europeia, e 1 na parte Asiática. Esta edição da Copa do Mundo, juntamente com a Universíada de Verão de 2013 e os Jogos Olímpicos de Inverno de 2014, que também foram realizados em território russo, foram os primeiros eventos esportivos de importância mundial realizados no país desde os Jogos Olímpicos de Verão de 1980. A FIFA escolheu a Rússia por causa do aumento do interesse da população russa no futebol, graças a investimentos financeiros no esporte, do aumento da importância da Primeira Liga Russa e a migração de jogadores estrangeiros para o país, além da ascensão econômica da Rússia após a dissolução da União Soviética em 1991. A França se sagrou bicampeã mundial ao vencer a Croácia por 4-2 na grande decisão. a Bélgica ficou em terceiro lugar e a Inglaterra em quarto. Vale lembrar a boa campanha do Uruguai eliminado nas quartas de final. Modric foi eleito o craque da Copa e Kane o artilheiro. Nas Copas de 1998 e 2002 eu estava morando fora do Brasil, em Londres, onde pude acompanhar vários jogos e seguir toda a preparação e expectativa que os países, e sua população, têm sobre esse evento. Assisti pela televisão os jogos das Copas do Mundo de 1998 da França e de 2002 do Japão e Coréia do Sul estando fora do Brasil, vou contar um pouco dessa experiência sobre os jogos da seleção brasileira nessas copas. Em 1998, apesar de estar morando em Londres, fiz uma viagem no período que a Copa estava sendo disputada, assisti jogos do Brasil pelas tvs da Inglaterra, da Índia, de Cingapura, da Austrália, da Tasmânia e da China. A Inglaterra é o país criador do futebol, mas Índia e Cingapura não tem tradição nenhuma nesse esporte, enquanto a Austrália e a China já disputaram Copas do Mundo, inclusive jogando contra a nossa seleção.

The Brazilian Northeast has long been a marginalized region with a complex relationship to national identity. It is often portrayed as impoverished, backward, and rebellious, yet traditional and culturally authentic. Brazil is known for its strong national identity, but national identities do not preclude strong regional identities. In Region Out of Place, Courtney J. Campbell examines how groups within the region have asserted their identity, relevance, and uniqueness through interactions that transcend national borders. From migration to labor mobilization, from wartime dating to beauty pageants, from literacy movements to representations of banditry in film, Campbell explores how the development of regional cultural identity is a modern, internationally embedded conversation that circulated among Brazilians of every social class. Part of a region-based nationalism that reflects the anxiety that conflicting desires for modernity, progress, and cultural authenticity provoked in the twentieth century, this identity was forged by residents who continually stepped out of their expected roles, taking their region’s concerns to an international stage.

Although the game of soccer is known by many names around the world—football, fútbol, Fußball, voetbal—the sport is a universal language. Throughout the past century, governments have used soccer to further their diplomatic aims through a range of actions including boycotts, carefully orchestrated displays at matches, and more. In turn, soccer organizations have leveraged their power over membership and tournament decisions to play a role in international relations. In Soccer Diplomacy, an international group of experts analyzes the relationship between soccer and diplomacy. Together, they investigate topics such as the use of soccer as a tool of nation-state–based diplomacy, soccer as a non-state actor, and the relationship between soccer and diplomatic actors in subnational, national, and transnational contexts. They also examine the sport as a conduit for representation, communication, and negotiation. Drawing on a wealth of historical examples, the contributors demonstrate that governments must frequently address soccer as part of their diplomatic affairs. They argue that this single sport—more than the Olympics, other regional multisport competitions, or even any other sport—reveals much about international relations, how states attempt to influence foreign views, and regional power dynamics.
